Title: New Wargame : Triumph & Tragedy Sneak Preview
Post by: Driscoles on August 24, 2007, 09:29:14 AM
Hello,

Westfalia Chris and me are proud to give you a sneak preview into our new Ruleset Triumph and Tragedy.

Releasedate will be october 07 and we will be at this years  Crisis Wargame Show  to run a participation game for interested wargamers.

Welcome to the world of “Triumph & Tragedy”. “T & T” is a tabletop adventure wargame designed for a number of players, starting from two, but working just as well as a multiplayer game. If you can get a friend to act as an umpire, it can greatly improve the game by adding chance or unexpected events as well as having a ruling instance. It is not strictly necessary, however.

The focus of the current “T & T” rules is on the Great War and the “Interwar years” from 1914-c1939, allowing players to re-enact adventures in such diverse settings as Russia, China and India, as well as South America. One of the first upcoming supplements will focus on the Spanish Civil War, which, due to its confusing, diverse and fascinating nature, lends itself well to adventure gaming.

To play a game of “T & T”, players will require the following:

1.   Some wargame miniatures for each player. “T & T .” does not require large numbers of figures, a dozen or so will work for starters, but you can easily expand to games with some 30 or more figures per player. There are a number of excellent manufacturers who provide fine miniatures for the various settings; a list of recommended manufacturers can be found at the back of this booklet. You may also include some vehicles, but to start with, it might be better to only use infantry, since it will be easier to get into the rules.

2.   A set of order cards for each player, as supplied with these rules.

3.    One unit card for each of the players´ units, which details the stats and initiative ratings and is required for establishing the sequence of play.

4.   A number of dice is needed. The types of dice used in the game are six-sided dice and ten-sided dice (referred to as “d6” and “d10” for short). In general, the d10 are required for determining combat results, whereas the d6 are used for various checks, “morale” “ skill” and “score” checks using 2d6 (roll two six-sided dice and add the results).

5.   In addition to the miniatures, model terrain is helpful in creating a fascinating game. Many gamers will have  a collection of terrain to use, so simply use what you have at hand and think suits the setting.

6.   Finally, as noted in the introductory paragraph, an umpire or “game master” can greatly add to the fun by handling rules disputes, and, more importantly, design and direct scenarios which provide for more interesting games than the usual “line-´em-up and slug-it-out” type of games.

IT IS NOT STRICTLY NECESSARY to include a game-master, such as in true RPGs; nonetheless, we have found it is a great way to take a break from the usual wargame run.

If you have questions dont hesitate and ask either Chris or me. As soon we have more news, we will post them here. Thanks for your interest.

Cheers
Björn

This sounds VERY nice. It'll probably be the thing to finally push me over into Back of Beyond / Interwar.

Good call with the SCW supplement, too.

I can highly recommend it. We had some games with that rules and T&T was very fun to play, easy and quick with lots of possibilities. I'm really looking forward to play the final version! Good luck, Björn and Chris!

Yay, the secret´s out! Now we needn´t drudge around it in discussions!

Cannot yet comment on the price, but Driscoles will give you details ASAP, I´m sure.

Glad you like the cover design. :D

I´m really happy with the final version of the rules. You´ll be able to use them as purely platoon action or even single figure skirmish rules, or use different figure ratios to have your troops represent larger formations.

As hinted, we´ll do some "army lists", notably for the Russian, Chinese and Spanish Civil Wars, although those will most likely be NOT "official", rather being guidelines and short history primers to allow a good mix of pulp fun and historical feel. And they´ll include playing aids as well as scenario ideas.

Great news, do you have a plan for US distributors?  If not PM me and I know of one who might be interested.

I have to wait until October!  I don't know about that, the Russians and the Chinese want a go at each other.  I am keeping them in separate boxes but they may cross on my painting table and then I can't hold back!  :)

Some more teaser stuff, a couple of our playtesting Unit Cards. These will look a bit different in the final version: you´ll get blank cards with the rulebook on which you can note the details of your army´s units; the army lists will feature "pre-made" unit cards.

The point is to have an easy means of stats and equipment reference, as well as being used to determine the order of play.

And yes, the soldiers on the last card are actually White resp. Czarist Army Russians. As said, these cards are mock-ups, but you get the basic idea.

Yes, the cards are nice. But they are only an example how they can look like when you make your own cards.

Here we have some extractions from historical pictures. In our test games we used cards with pictures from our own painted miniatures collection.

Purists can use simple poker game cards.

The game cards that come with the game will also look nice  :)

Above  you see the units name. Right is initiative value. On the bottom is the stat line and some space for equipment the unit uses.

Cheers

I'd volunteer to program an online card generator, where people can upload a picture, input name, stats and stuff and get a page full of nice cards to print out. If Chris hasn't already done that for his Red Army cards

Rain, hailstorms, superglue stains, outdated software... nothing can stop a Cardboard Warlord!

Here is a _very_ basic version I whipped up in an hour or so: card generator (http://www.pardulon.com/temp/generator.html) The picture needs to be on a webserver and you need to provide the full path including http:// to load it. Some work to do on the layout, but otherwise, this should work. Let me know what you think.

The Incredible Zaffarelli. Amazing. One thing, though, you´ll need to remove the "Combat" stat, since we straight-laced the system a bit in that.
Title: New Wargame : Triumph & Tragedy Sneak Preview
Post by: Zafarelli on August 31, 2007, 07:02:42 PM
Made some changes... the background image can easily be changed (I just took the one from my page), as can the dynamically embedded Score icon in the upper left. I had no fancy Red Star, so I took the numbers from my page again.

And it is neither magic nor teutonic efficiency, merely cunning Copy/Paste from a tutorial site

Oh, and "Combat" has gone, too.

Nah, quality is just a text input field. Anyway it will be a radio button in the final version. I'll change it someday 8)

By the way, isn't it sad that triumphandtragedy.com is already taken (as are the .info, .org, .biz and various others)? What about .mil addresses, are these available, or are they reserved for the "real" military?

Dear Helen,

we´re currently full and busy getting the main rulebook ready for printing; however, we´ve got at least two supplements planned, concerning the Russian and Spanish Civil Wars, which will include "army lists" (ie, organisational guidelines); since our game has a rather more "pulpy" feel and is not exactly a die-hard simulation*, those will certainly include all manner of "exotic" troop types, and Estonian Rifles as well as Baltic Freikorps are high on the list.

Of course, our general approach is that you´ll be able to model any force of your liking, and the basic rule set includes a basic "force creation system" with which you´ll be able to produce "prototypes" for various types of troops.

*: understatement at work!

I will certainly pick a copy of the rules up at Crisis (if available). Great to hear about the supplements, I'm new to the period and will need some guidelines for forming forces.
Does the "pulpy" feeling also include rules for characters or only for units?

Hope to see the game at Crisis!

DJ

Hello DJ,

T+T will be definately available at Crisis. We are looking forward to see you at our participation game table.

The "pulpy" feeling goes more with the characters. So, there will be rules for characters. They are not a must for the scenarios you play. But in case you like to play a campaign they spice it up.

We designed the rules in a way that you can either play a bit more adventurous pulp style games or historical acurate games. Depends on what you want.

The final testgames we did on the TST Convention were all historical based WW1 games and they worked very well.

Cheers
Björn

The font used on these play-test cards is called "10CentSoviet" and is available here:

http://1001freefonts.com/numfonts.htm

We used the Adventure BT font (vulgo "Indy Font") for the generic cards in the basic rulebook and will, presumably, use themed fonts for the army list cards. I´ll have to re-organise my font collection first after my re-installation last Friday, but you can reasonably expect "faux calligraphy" for the Chinese and Japanese forces, typewriter or stencil fonts for Western forces and similar.

Yup, I´m rather happy with it as well. I did a lot of the tidy-up work and graphics, as well as the english text, so, for any atrocities committed against the english language, don´t blame poor Bjoern!

We decided not to use too many pictures "just because be could" but rather have primarily "explanatory" ones where it was useful and some "filler pics" to avoid empty spaces (not too many of those, we crammed a real lot of rules into those 40 pages, and still managed to produce a legible and pleasant-to-view result).

As said, the basic rules include empty "generic" unit cards, while the supplements will have empty cards for your own units and finished, illustrated cards for preconstructed units (Gunboat sailors, etc.).

It will be a free giveaway. First available at Crisis. Later at our website ( working on it ) as a free download.

@Driscoles / Zaffarelli:
Will T&T be available in Pardulon's webstore by next week?

Cheers, Ralf

Will be. Björn and I have pretty much settled it, we'll talk about the details on the trip to Antwerp.

Where can I buy these at Crisis? At the demo-table or at the Pardulon stand?

At the Pardulon stand, but the demo table will be right in front of it. We're located somewhere in the upper left on the floorplan, opposite the main entrance, IIRC. See you there!

Congratulations, Björn! The website looks very promising. The pictures of the game report are great. As well as the gallery pictures. I'm really looking forward to the release of T&T in Germany.

Wishing you all the best for the T&T presentation at Crisis.

Oooh! Neat new site!

One of the things I like best about Alex is that he's always willing to give real support to people who are doing great stuff for the hobby.

Look, you need to get copies to Lon at Brigade damned quickly. I'm really looking forward to buying a copy from you guys. I'd buy it even if I didn't like Christian and Björn anyway.

More than two - there are LOTS of pigs with the tank.
And I think I could rub one reason out too.

 Pig tank!

:o    8)

What a fantasticly bizarre yet beautiful model!
I just love the fact that you also get a cook, a waiter & a mascot with it.  I've only just realised how much I need a pig waiter.
Mind you, I wouldn't want to live next door to the designer - he must suffer from some serious psychotic episodes

Shame about the price, but I might just try & save up for one.

That thing is just mental. It reminds me of some anime thing I saw once about an Italian pig that was a pilot in the Great War (or something like that). Those Japanese, they so crazy!

Yep - those models add so much character  8) As for the designer - I wouldn;t mind being his neighbour. He is none other than Hayao Miyazaki, an anime designer of international renown. For more pigs (and seaplanes), check out his Porco Rosso cartoon:
http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/porco/
The seaplanes are based on historical models.
The tank itself is a fantastic extrapolation of the bizarre heavy tank designs which appeared between the wars, and is featured in manga short story penned for a modelling magazine.
This link:
http://www.hlj.com/product/TACTG-1
shows the kit bits for the previous version - identical, but with just 3 pigs.
The new version with full crew is grand  8)
Pity you can't see the waiter well - he's in the front rank behind the commander.

I just found it on Amazon.co.uk for six quid! At that price it is a must-buy, I reckon. I Just put the order in.

It's dubbed (doesn't seem to be a Japanese option with subtitles), but you can't have everything. Can't really complain about it at that price.

Ah, but to what scale are Pigs who wear uniforms made.... ?
The good thing is there are no recognizable weapons, and even if so, they are built to piggy scale. Said pigs are, by the way, slightly shorter than GW Ratlings and Halflings, except for the tiny mascot.
I guess I'm not the purist I once was - it's so liberating to think I once refused to mix (e.g.) GW and Ral Partha models and have now gotten over these constraints. Scale is a more serious issue, but since I have no 28mm pigs and do not plan to include war boars from some fantasy game, then these trim-uniformed chaps can fit in without problems - for me, at any rate.  :)
Oink!
PS - the model is so big it still towers over 28mm scale  troops! And the turret is bigger than some 1/35 scale tank turrets....

Well, you get an Adolf-Hitler-Lookalike acting as a referee in a fight o´ fisticuffs towards the end, so I guess it evens out. And those planes are just darn swell.

You can't go wrong with Miyazaki movies, even paying full retail prices for them. Six Quid falls into the category of "purchase on impulse". Porco Rosso is worth it for just the animation of the planes. The dub is a good one, done by for rizzle actors, and not out-of-work Hollywood B-list and Cam Clarke.

I've seen one cutaway drawing of Vanvlak's tank model from one of Miyazaki's art books. It was a hoot. Think of the tank as something more like a navy gunboat (hence the galley cook and Captain's waiter) and you get the feel for it. So much fun...

Curse our perfidiously weak dollar! Five years ago that tank would have been $20.   :x

Hmmm, I must get a copy.

Just read the blurb, containing the following quote from Miyazaki:

"Initially, it was supposed to be a 45-minute film for tired businessmen to watch on long airplane flights... Why kids love it is a mystery to me."

He obviously doesn't know any wargamers...

I've also ordered Princess Mononoke, which I've meant to get for ages. Just need one more for free postage

I saw the "Miyazaki-designed Akuyaku 1-go (Bad Guy #1)", but I hadn't realised it was THAT Miyazaki. You're right, he'd be a mega-cool neighbour

You would't happen to have any URLs of the short story, by any chance?
