Title: Anatolis project thread [Ancient warrior 24/10]
Post by: Anatoli on October 30, 2010, 06:30:10 PM
Hi, not entirely sure how this new forum works and if I'm doing it correct to post pictures in the category of interest. Should something be wrong then any moderator may feel free to move the thread :-)

Anyways, my name is Alexander - some may have seen me around on SteveDean or TMP as "Anatoli" , or just seen my blog. I'm currently knee deep in Lovecraftian miniature wargaming, just a sudden urge to start doing something out of Lovecrafts universe after reading the novels and having played Arkham Horror + expansions. So I started out a little project i named "Journey into madness", using models from various sources and ranges to get a 1920 sort of feel.

Here's a slice of what I've been painting for this project so far:

I also ordered the rulebook and expansion for "Strange Aeons" a week ago from uncle Mike's - look forward to receiving it maybe next week or the week after that and give the rules a go (they look promising) :-)

You can see all miniatures and pictures related to my Lovecraft stuff if you look at my blog under "Journey into Madness" http://anatolisgameroom.blogspot.com/search/label/Journey%20into%20Madness

I also do reviews of board games once a week - and have written about Arkham Horror and the King in Yellow + Dunwich Horror expansions among other things. Link to the reviews if that should be of interest http://anatolisgameroom.blogspot.com/search/label/Boardgame%20review

Blog is updated daily with various stuff, but the Lovecraft project will probably dominate the miniature department for a at least a couple of more weeks.

Welcome!! I have seen your work in the Steve Dean forum.

Your painting is great and you have enough miniatures to play Strange Aeons.

Nice work… expensive trip though ;) especially for the 20’s… but then again if your insane enough to go there, the price shouldn’t be of much concern lol

Who make the figures in the first picture?
Title: Re: Anatolis project thread
Post by: Anatoli on October 30, 2010, 08:57:02 PM
The navy guys are CannonFodder
2nd picture West Wind "Monks" and Reaper "Bathalian"
3rd  West Wind "London detectives".
4th  EM4 "proto shoggoth"
5th Mix of West Wind "London Thugs", and one BTD Partisan rifleman

Great to hear about Strange Aeons einarolofson, seen your awesome work on SteveDeanPainting as well very inspirational!

The cultists are some sort of Monks from West Winds "Vampire wars" range. There are two blisters of those, the other has them with axes in their hands, thinking of getting those as well at some point.

Received my order from Uncle Mikes today! Looking through the Strange Aeons books at the moment, also received a couple of sample blisters from their range. So expect a product review of both soon, as well as a proper rundown of how the rules work and the game flows maybe as soon as this weekend  :)

I ordered both Strange Aeon books from Uncle Mike's a week ago and received them yesterday, I've put together a detailed review of the books themselves and listed the content along with pictures of it all (with permission from Uncle Mike's).
I figured I would do this since there is little information on this Lovecraftian ruleset to be found.
http://anatolisgameroom.blogspot.com/2010/11/first-look-at-strange-aeons.html

There will be a follow up on a rundown and review of the rules themselves around this weekend so keep an eye out  :-)

A collective "hi" to all the guys from the SoTR forum, nice to see you all  :)

Phil, yeah although Secrets takes up a lot of shelf space I still do other projects on the side as you might tell - and that's also why I've been low key on SoTR forums for the past months painting other models.

About that blog special, still interested in having you on - I'm scouting for more people at the moment and I think I've found them. Just need to contact and make arrangements with you all  :D

His were really damn nice, but I felt I needed to paint mine differently since they were to take part in the "Brush off" competition.

A few more West Wind models painted as decomposing braindead minions for my Malifaux and Strange Aeons games.
More pics from different angles and a group picture of all 8 can be found on my blog.

I've written a fairly detailed battle report as a follow up on my rundown of the rules to show how the game flows, some of the modifiers and special rules etc.

The mission generated was "Monster Attack" and a group of eager but rather ill equipped Treshold agents had to defeat the abomination – it would prove to be a desperate battle which ended pretty cinematically.

You can find the complete battle report along with pictures of the struggle on my blog:

Following the tradition of my other miniature games I made a promotional video for Strange Aeons as I now had enough miniatures for such a thing.

Thanks Daniel  :)

My initial idea was to post the video directly on the blog, but the "blogger video" rendition was something like 320x240 pixels which sucked.... Couldn't embed the video on the blog either.

I have a few blisters left to paint, and will order some additional monsters from UncleMikes at the end of the month so the painting of models for Strange Aeons will go on for yet a couple of weeks. I like the West Wind range, the models are not covered in unnecessary details and are both fun and easy to paint.

Pretty much the same goes for the UncleMikes range of models, fun and easy to paint. Not cluttered with details. I remember painting Wh40k models packed with crap, they took forever to paint being tiresome and boring models.

I’m also waiting for Warlord Games to finally release their new Polish sculpts to the store, they had them painted 2 weeks ago and still nothing. Need those anti mech rifles and sniper teams for my Polish platoon!

The miniatures looks very characterfull like individuals!

Where can i buy the rules, only from Uncle Mike in Canada?
I won't to pay horrific postages like other things i ordered from
America.
I downloaded the demopack and love it!! :-*

You can buy from http://www.shop.battlefield-berlin.de/  there postage seems dear, but drop them a line they will give a true P&P based on what you buy, 2 packets here in the UK cost me 4.50 Euro, and they waiting for the new stock coming in.

As JNR says Battlefield Berlin if you live in Europe. Or you can convince some buddies to join you in the order directly from UncleMikes and split the P&P between you.

While not minaiture related, the theme of todays blog entry has a strong connection to this project. I've put together a review of the Innsmouth Horror expansion for Arkham Horror on my blog today.
This is the most recent "Boardbased expansion" following Dunwich and Kingsport Horror. The theme is of course based upon the "The shadow over Innsmouth" novel my H P Lovecraft

Can see where you're going but the highlights are too pastel for me and to stark, could do with some softer progression. But again as I said can definately see where you're going with this.

Thanks, I got the idea from the Incursion wound markers which show blood splatter. Figured it would look cool with blood splatter on a transparent base. I basecoated a bunch of bases black and am thinking of painting the Strange Aeons spells, swarms, poison and on fire symbols on them. The reason is that I had a crazy card time cutting out the round original markers I got with my Strange Aeons rulebook so that the edges are smooth and even. I managed to ruin "Touch of Death" with a superglue accident....  :?

What I would need is a 22mm round "punching" tool to get a perfect result.

@Commander Vyper,

No I left him the way he is, for now. I have some ideas for a "rainy day" though.

edit: forgot to answer about the bases. They are clear 22mm EM4 markers, painted with inks and varnished. Not aware of any other wound markers but will check out Fenris.

@thebinmann

My adress? You mean where I live?

The "zombies" and pretty much all humans, civilians, cultists and agents alike are West Wind models, various Gothic Horror/Vampire Wars blisters painted up to represent proper Strange Aeon characters.

Got back to painting today, figured I would paint up the UncleMikes "Suicide Cultist" before I start painting the remaining 4 West Wind "Cultists" I have at home. Battling with worn out brushes and a creeping cold made for a poor painting experience. I need to buy new brushes bad, hopefully sometime this week as all my large ones are worn out and painting large areas with detail brush just wears them out as well.

Sweden, near Lund  :D

Don't have the empty blisters anymore but as I said the Gothic Horror range. I know there are London Thugs, London Mob, London Gentlemen, London Detectives, Evil Henchmen, The Brotherhood" etc. You'd have to browse the ranges within the Gothic Horror category.

The sailors/navy are CannonFodder Miniatures.

Two more cultists, two more to go and one cult leader before this bunch is finished.

Just like with the Rat-Freak I have not yet matt varnished them. Will use cavalry saber rules from the Strange Aeons book and Axe and Torch rules from the Shocking Tales book for these guys.

A couple more pictures on my blog: http://anatolisgameroom.blogspot.com/2010/12/journey-into-madness-cultists-with.html

I like these West Wind Productions Vampire Wars Miniatures as cultist and your done them justice in the paint job, what I would like to see from West Wind is more pictures of them, there is 4 sets of 4 miniatures each, but there pictures only show two of the full sets, and two picture are just singular miniatures.

I agree I would not have bought these figures based on the west wind website pictures. But Anatoli has shown us how nice these figures really are.

Thanks guys, I have the privilege of seeing all the West Wind blisters in the flesh before I buy them from my local internet store - I know the guy so I can dig around in his stock whenever I want to buy something or just browse. I guess it is much harder to decide upon a WW blister when looking at pictures on the internet. The models look much better most of the time IRL.

I have two more of these monks to go before I can move on to stuff that are a little more interesting to paint  :)

Hopefully my UncleMike order will arrive at my local supplier this week as well, and maybe the painting prize's from the BrushOff so I can boost my monster collection in time for next weekend's "GameDay" at our club in Lund.

I picked up my Uncle Mike's order during the gameday at the club this Saturday, and received my "Brush Off" prize models with the mail today - so there will be lots of Strange Aeons stuff getting painted.

Had to start with one of the new Fishmen, couldn't decide how to paint the flesh,so it went from blueish/purple to green in the end. Lots of mixing fleshtones with dark green on this one. Also used dark brown as a basecoat for the red instead of my usual purple basecoat.

More pictures along with a sneak peak of the other new Fishman model on my blog:

Hi Anatoli,

A bit late to the thread, but ...

Love the servitors - have just ordered these from Doug (at em4) and can't wait to pick them up at Penarth (Crusader) next week and get them painted.

... and I still have a shed load of giant rats from ages ago (Citadel, I think), which just need a quick lick of paint and could proxy for giant vermin.

Thanks guys :)

@ Ramirez, I think reaper has some giant rat(s) as well, at least one large rat and a lot of smaller ones which could be used for swarms. These are huge though (in a good way) and as I wrote on the blog could be used as mutated rats for post apoc games as well. Love to have multi purpose miniatures when my shelf space is shrinking fast!

The Giant Vermin is not all that mighty, but they are rather cheap, so you can pimp them with some additional wounds and toughness to make them more dangerous if you like  :)

I played two Strange Aeons games with Widgren today, wrote two short "summed up" battle reports and took a few pictures during the game. You can check it out and read it all on my blog:

http://anatolisgameroom.blogspot.com/2011/01/strange-aeons-game-221.html

I was bummed out to realize I had NOT brought my giant vermin with me!! The plan was to use them as fillers for my Treshold list... and my Winged Nightmare had to be baptized by bad die rolls and just like any other fresh painted model met an untimely and unfair death  lol

Widgren brought 2 cool houses and his water tower, and some straight out of the box cars, we both collected some jacko-foam for terrain building. I have a plan to build something for the Egyptian resin pieces I have been dealt by the club, maybe some temple with playable interior.

After having painted a bunch of 15mm models I had to treat myself with a couple cool 28mm miniatures that I had saved for a special occasion, one of them being this Mad Scientist for Strange Aeons by Uncle Mike's. Einarolafson have already spoiled us with his superbly painted version, but here's my take on him. I think he would work perfectly as a "Dr Hugo von X" for Incursion as well, being the same scale as the Incursion range and all  :)

Been a really long time since I painted something for Strange Aeons, but I have a couple of models that will be painted as a break from my current 15mm FoW project.

A model I painted today to give me a break from all the 15mm stuff I'm currently assembling and painting. Lots more pictures on my blog, and a rant about the place from which I got the model:

Thanks - I can safely say that it was as disturbing to paint the little wiener as it is to look at. There's a first time for everything it would seem. I remember the good old days with genderless monsters  lol

Painted up 2 more models from the West Wind blister "Arctic Explorers" to make a trio of adventurous agents ready to explore the arctic caves and whatever else they might find inside. They will be used for Strange Aeons.

This sort of delay is common.  I purchased the zombie sets last year and had to wait months for the minis to arrive.  Communication is not their strongest point.  I believe it's a one man operation and this has something to do with the delay.  I eventually got the figures but had to be very patient.  The corresponding thread on Frothers was entertaining with all of the annoyed people venting their frustrations.

I had no problem with the 4 week shipping, after ordering stuff online for years one gets used to it. But it was the lack of communication that drove me nuts once I had received the wrong models the first time.

Very cool!  I just started working on this figure myself, and the idea to do it flayed never even crossed my mind.  Quite inventive, sir!

The small "mutie man Slythe" model from Ramshackle games, actually he is perfectly sized for my 25mm West Wind Gothic Horror collection. I painted him to represent the "king in yellow" as seen on the box cover of Arkham Horror: King in Yellow. I also painted the King in Yellow sign on his robe to make him a bit more interesting.

Thanks guys, there will be a few more minis for my "Lovecraft" themed collection over the next few days.

The "Trixie" promotional miniature from Ramshackle Games which I got for free with my order a while back. I figure she will be perfect for those scenarios that need a human sacrifice or a damsel in distress marker. I painted her with her eyes shut to represent her to be unconscious.

Title: Re: Anatolis project thread [Terrain for demo table 5/9]
Post by: Anatoli on September 05, 2011, 12:43:41 PM
I've had plans for a good looking and detailed 4x4 skirmish wargaming table which could be used for all my skirmish games like Strange Aeons, LotoW and Malifaux. So I've started assembling and painting new buildings, building and painting furniture, going over old terrain pieces to make them look better etc.

The idea is to have a realistic looking demo table for SydCon which is held in Malmö, Sweden in October. Lots of details and materials ordered from various sources, so terrain building will have an upswing on my blog.

This is the first batch of furniture, a mix of Grendel metal and resin pieces and my own balsa wood constructions.

More pictures and closeups of these can be seen on my blog.

http://www.sydcon.sverok.net/

I will talk to Pär, the owner of Kulturkommissariatet to see if he's going. If so there will be some sort of joint effort as he is selling pretty much all the obscure/odd/weird/cool miniature wargames in Sweden and has stuff like the Strange Aeons range in stock.

He also has better connection with the SydCon crew so I'll ask him to hook me up with a place  to stand and do demo's.

First building for my demo game project, a couple more will be posted during the week. More pictures, and my ideas of using "Dungeon tiles" from Wrath of Ashardalon as an additional underground location can be seen on my blog:

One of my old balsa scratch builds that I decided to keep around for my new demo table. Though it needed some touching up so I repainted the exterior and interior, and it looked pretty decent when I threw in the remainder of the furniture from my first batch.

West Wind, Gothic Horror range  :)

I was tipped about a great range of resin building in 25-28mm scale from a German store which I will order from towards the end of this month, they pretty much got everything I need and the buildings are affordable even with the static 14Euro shipping fee http://www.rusus.de.vu/

Not the most exciting terrain in the world but they will blend into the countryside once the remainder of my terrain is done. I'm considering to dirty them down a bit more, they look almost clean on the pictures (which they aren't IRL).

Terrain doesn't necessarily need to be exciting - just plausible, I think.  As for this, terrifying things aren't always in the big spooky house.

Looking good, you're probably right on dirtying it up.

Two models from Uncle Mike's, the attack dog was initially a zombie dog put I patched it up with some green stuff. The bloated zombie is a promotion model sent with all orders during this month.
