The Lead in Leadworth
It's a remarkable fact that many gaming miniatures, though designed and sold for entirely different purposes can be pressed into service as Doctor Who figures with an appropriate paint job and maybe a little putty.
This thread will show my attempts to do that for the latest series, story by story. Apologies in advance for the crudity of the putty work and the photography (the painting isn't quite as poor as it appears, honestly).
Firstly, the regular characters, and Something Old.

Brilliant! I always thought that would make a great Rory.
Kudos on May's jumper BTW - very nicley done.
-
Very nice chap.
Where did the TARDIS come from i keep looking out for a decent one thats not going to cost me several arms and leg's..
-
Wonderful stuff.
I particularly like the second photo, great conversions on Amy and Rory.
Also why the white V on the bases. Is it just for the figures facing?
-
I love the Rory conversions! I am very impressed by everything actually. I had the same idea for using that model for the Queen. Excellent execution. And where is the River Song model originally from?
-
:-* :-* Lovely stuff! I planned to do the same thing (story by story) for all the new series, but have so far only go as far as painting two doctors, Rose, K9 and the Tardis... Any chance of a list of what minis were from where? (I can pick out the Crooked Dice and Hasslefree ones, but I'm a bit nonplussed as to the rest...)
-
Thanks, everyone.
Lupus, the TARDIS is a diecast from the Sci-Fi Collector's Centre, repainted a bit - it comes in a box with an out-of-scale Dalek Sec for £10.
Malamute, yes, the triangles are just facing markers. I haven't actually got games in mind for most of these (yet), but it keeps them consistent with the rest of my collection.
Chairface, River Song is converted from "PLP040 Lily" in Artizan's Thrilling Tales range.
-
What a great set of miniatures, brilliant work love it some dedication and it shows 10/10
Tony
-
Nice work! This might just inspire me to get back to work on my stalled out projects! Love all the custom figures! :-*
-
Wow, nice job! What are the other figures (who makes them)? Are those Scooby-doo figures?
-
Myincubliss - were those your Doctor Who figures in the "What I painted..." thread for September? I look forward to seeing more.
Figure run-down so far:
Lead in Leadworth
Picture 1 - Heresy Nerdlord II, Heresy Emily Lake
Picture 2 - Crooked Dice Tweedy Mattison, Crooked Dice WPC May Killan (converted), Hasslefee Wolsey (converted)
Picture 3 - Heresy Nerdlord I, Sci-Fi Collector's centre TARDIS, Artizan Lily (converted)
The Eleventh Hour
Picture 1 - Hasslefree kiddie plus putty cardigan as Amelia; Heresy Nerdlord I head on home sculpted body as the Raggedy Doctor; Crooked Dice WPC May Killan; Citadel Tyranid ripper head plus putty body as Prisoner Zero; Hasslefree Wolsey (slightly converted - pocket, pass, undershirt and extended nose)
Picture 2 - Atraxi from a ping-pong ball and a tea strainer (horrible! With luck, Character Options will do a nice plastic one; but, then again, I've been waiting for a Dalek Saucer since 2005); others as before.
Picture 3 - Artizan "Thrilling Tales" Prof. Walcot
The Beast Below
Harlequin Dr Who movie Susan as Mandy; atrocious home sculpted Winder; Reaper Nightshade (converted) as Liz Ten; home scupted space whale root.

Sweet thanks for that i was looking at one thats an air freshner as well the other day :D
-
Curse you and your sculpting, looks like I've got a fair way to go to catch up! (consider several ideas nicked though ;D)
-
Superb - love the Atraxi even more so because of what its made of!
Any plans for the Krafaysis in Vincent and the Doctor?
Must admit I'm quite tempted to start cutting the hands of Roman Legionnaries to recreate The Pandorica episodes... >:D
-
Which remind me, when Northstar had a sale on Warlord plastic Romans I bought a bunch to make Roman Autons, should really get round to painting those...
-
Well, Thantsants, I was planning to show the models in sequence, but since you asked, here's my Krafayis:
I've included a Refusian, a Visian and a naked Spiridon for scale.
-
not had chance to come on here recently... great stuff Steve... we're running a proxies thread on the CD forum, you should post these up... Rory is great...
-
Nice one Steve! lol
Is that a micro-sized Nucleus I can also see bottom left? ;)
-
Just to note that my DSL hardware seems to have conked out (I'm typing this on a rickety dial-up connection), so it may be a little while before I can post pictures anywhere. :'(
-
Really great stuff.. :)
-
Victory of the Daleks
Wow, uploading photos over a dial-up is slow. But here we go with the most unpopular story in Doctor Who Magazine's annual poll!

Too right: World War Two with Daleks. Should have been amazing, and wasn't. Quite spectacularly wasn't. How on earth did they manage to fuck that up? While the season wasn't without faults here and there, I thought that was the only episode that actively sucked.
Still not loving the new Daleks that look like toys, but am loving your figures. :)
-
Very nice! We were thinking of running VotD as a participation game at Salute next year.
Where does the female officer come from BTW?
-
Cracking stuff!
Your Churchill looks more like the real thing than the chap playing him in this episode - bet its a better actor too! :D
-
Thanks, chaps.
Credit for the Churchill likeness should go to sculptor Adam Clarke of Black Scorpion.
Aircraftswoman Breen uses the body of "ATS Driver Sally Haines" from Artizan's Thrilling Tales range, with a spare head from Hasslefree, and putty hair added by me.
-
I've just added Patrick Moore to the entry for The Eleventh Hour, back on page 1 of this thread, courtesy of Artizan's "Thrilling Tales" range.
-
nice conversion on the not-shaggy.

And some things we didn't see on TV: a cleric with a heavy weapon (the Verger, perhaps, though I got the impression that he was more of a Quartermaster-Sergeant type), and an Angel about to strip the cerebral cortex from Sacred Bob's head.

Splendid stuff - could you please list the source minis?

Awesome stuff Steve. I've really been enjoying this thread.

Splendid stuff - could you please list the source minis?
that... those other Angels are interesting
-
H’okay. I’ll catch up from the last couple of posts.
Victory of the Daleks
Picture 1
Aircraftswoman Breen: Artizan PLP146 "ATS Driver Sally Haines" with a spare head from Hasslefree, and putty hair added by me.
Winston Churchill: from Black Scorpion.
Professor Bracewell: Hasslefree HFN 007 “Professor W Beattie” with added glasses and restyled hair.
Ironsides Dalek: Character Online Doctor Who Micro-Universe, with added packs (some from Tamiya 1/48 WW2 Briish infantry).
Picture 2
Soldiers: Crusader Miniatures WWB 001 “Early War British Riflemen”.
ARP warden: Foundry WW2 B7 “British characters”, with added moustache.
Picture 3
Daleks: came with Doctor Who Adventures comic.
The Time of Angels and Flesh and Stone
Picture 1 (which I must replace – the lighting is terrible - now replaced)
Byzantium Guards: The Assault Group SWA 001 “SWAT Team Commanders” and SWA 003 “SWAT entry team”, with replacement heads from West Wind B-SHS4 “British Para heads in berets”.
Alistair: Blue Moon PC-008 “British agents”
River Song: Artizan PLP 038 “Agent Lake” with resculpted hair, shades, top and bag, and cut-down gun. The gauzy sleeves were built up with three layers of undilute PVA mixed with Citadel “Devlan Mud” wash over flesh-painted bare arms. The outrageously high shoes were cut to retain the depth of the original base.
Picture 2
River Song: Eureka 100 PLP 14 “Ginger Snaps” with replacement head from Copplestone Corporate Babe, added holster (Tamiya WW2 US infantry, with putty straps), and camera replaced with PDA carved from a plastic offcut.
Clerics: The Assault Group BRT-003 “British infantry in helmet”, with the sights removed from the guns and added goggles in putty.
Picture 3
The middle decayed Angel is a free gift from the cover of Doctor Who Adventures. It was one of those figures that grows when you add water. Despite my attempts to seal it, the surface blistered badly, but that’s fine – it just hasn’t absorbed enough radiation yet!
The other two decayed Angels are Baker Company VCIV3 “Vietnamese civilians”, after being attacked with knives, clippers and drills and spayed with textured paint.
Picture 4
From the left, figures 1, 2 and 5 are Crooked Dice “Scary statues”; figure 3 is from Foundry WG168 “Narcissus and the heroines”, with added wings from Black Cat Bases; figure 4 is from Foundry WG165 “Classical Greek Heroes”, again with Black Cat Bases wings.
Picture 5
The Verger is again from The Assault Group BRT-003 “British infantry in helmet”, with bits added to the rocket launcher at each end..
The Angel is from Immortal Miniatures “Greek Civilians”, with Black Cat Bases wings. Bob’s head came from my bits box.
-
Just replaced the first photo for The Time of Angels with a rather better one.
-
those figures look great! :o ;)

top stuff... Foundry Queen Bess for the mother? who does that last Vamp on the right?
Thanks. Yes, that's the Foundry Elizabeth the First ("Well, she thought she was the first." Sorry, wrong episode). The far right vamp is an old Ral Partha model from when they produced minis for the White Wolf Vampire RPG.
-
Great stuff! I really must try and get the Series 5 supplement padded out with some stuff. If you've any scenarios ideas just let me know.
What are you planning to use for Silurians BTW?
-
Wow - cracking stuff - you keep almost luring me away from my current fantasy obsession back to Who... :)
-
Nice! Any close ups of the vampire fish?
-
What are you planning to use for Silurians BTW?
I've got some ideas, but I'd rather not post about them until I've tried them out. They'll certainly involve a lot of (bad) sculpting and even more (and worse) swearing. Still, there doesn't seem much point waiting for Doctor Who Adventures to produce some plastic Silurians, does there?
Nice! Any close ups of the vampire fish?
Thanks. I should have the camera out later today. I'll see what I can do.
-
Any close ups of the vampire fish?

Horribly crude piece of sculpting, I'm afraid, and worsened by a terrible glueing accident when I was fixing on some of the last appendages (I just couldn't face scraping it off and starting again). Still, it's done and is generally recognisable.
-
Totally scratch built? I like 'em! Has a bit of that classic series charm.
-
Brilliant :D :D :D

Seemed appropriate for Valentine's Day - the episode, that is, not the minis. So far as those go, I don't fancy yours much. Or mine.
-
Brilliant!!
-
An update on the source minis.
Vampires of Venice
Picture 1
Francesco: Foundry Swashbuckler, with breastplate converted to jacket and spiky collar added to cape.

Other old folk (picture 2, left to right): Colonel Marbles; Copplestone “Bad Things”; Foundry WW2 British civilian; 4Color Superfigs civilian.

Nice Silurian conversions. What were the base models? Or were these scratch-sculpted?
-
Fantastic, they really look the part! :)
-
Thanks, chaps.
Source minis, mostly used as dollies:
Picture 1
Alaya: Body from Wizkids' Marvel Heroclix "Boom Boom", head cut down from a Citadel Kroot, lotsa putty.
Melohkeh: Body from Wargames Factory Zulu components, head from a Hasslefree male head sprue, lotsa putty.
Picture 2
Restac: Body from a Copplestone Bodyguard in Bikini, head from a Hasslefree female head sprue, lotsa putty.
Eldane: Originally a Perry Sudan arab horse holder, covered with ... oh, you guessed.
Picture 3
Warriors: Bodies from Copplestone Bodyguards in Bikinis, head cut down from Citadel Kroot, and that putty again. I've not got much left, now.
-
Love these! Great work--captured the essence of the characters!

Vincent and the Doctor

Nice use of Hasslefree village idiot there. The Dr playing footies a bit big, but then again I expect you'll be limited with regards to range of sculpt options.
The commander
-
The Dr playing footies a bit big, but then again I expect you'll be limited with regards to range of sculpt options.
Indeed. The body is from A&A. The only other range I know of is from Eureka, which are reputed to be a bit small.
-
Lovely! On Vincent, is that the head from a Copplestone sailor? Lovely conversion.
-
Nice update :)
-
Your dedication to this project is totally admirable, all the more so since the new series starts in two weeks - you're cutting it fine! lol
Great work on Vincent. :)

Yes, but I’d like to think that I’ll be able to stop the countdown at “02”. ;)
Source minis update.
Vincent and the Doctor
Vincent: Body from West Wind WW2 French civilian, head from Copplestone “Darkest Africa” British sailor in Sennet hat (well spotted, Chairface).
Easel: from scratch.
Amy: Crooked Dice Casual May Killan.
The Lodger
The Doctor: Body from A &A “World of Soccer”, head from Heresy Nerdlord.
Craig: Converted from Hasslefree Village Idiot (as pointed out by the Commander).
-
Yes, but I’d like to think that I’ll be able to stop the countdown at “02”. ;)
Of course, this apparent confidence is dependent on Photobucket starting to work again ...

The Pandorica Opens
First batch
This episode involves a heck of a lot of minis (though some have been seen before), so I'm splitting it into several batches. The first gets us almost as far as the opening credits!

He's in the trailer shown on CBBC. The credits for "The Pandorica Opens" that appeared in Doctor Who Magazine call him "Dorium", but I like to think of him as "Sidney Bluestreet".

Thanks. The plastic Romans were made from ... plastic Romans (from Warlord Games). How could I resist that?

That is an amazing Liz X.

The Pandorica Opens
Fourth batch
These guys were all mentioned as part of the Alliance fleet, but weren't actually seen in the episode. There's only so much room in an Underhenge, after all.

Even that isn't quite the lot. Also listed were the Haemo-Goths. But this is the first and only time that the Haemo-Goths have even been mentioned; I don't know what a Haemo-Goth looks like. So here, instead, is a Perky Goth.

Brilliant! The paint job on the Drahvin is particularly good. :D
Extra obscurity points for the Chelonian too! ;D
By my reckoning you just need a stone Dalek and you're all done – just in time for the new series. Well done! :)
-
By my reckoning you just need a stone Dalek and you're all done – just in time for the new series. Well done! :)
Thanks, but there are few more than that with the varnish drying on them. I'm covering "A Christmas Carol", but not "The Death of the Doctor" from The Sarah Jane Adventures, or the novels, audio books, short stories, comics (3 different series!) or computer games.

Nice!

He made it just in time to start all over with the new series saturday
Great Work mate!!!

Great work! Love the Roman Autons, Sycorax and Blowfish! Also good work on the Weevil--looks much more ferocious than mine. Have to look up the figure you based yours on if I decide to expand my Weevil army...
-
Thanks, guys.
carrma - is there apicture of your weevil anywhere?
Source minis for The Big Bang
Stone Dalek: Doctor Who Adventures free gift (first set), attacked with various sharp objects and sprayed with textured paint.
Doctor in white tie: Body from Copplestone Sleuth (the Nick Charles-alike), head from Heresy Nerdlord II, top hat from a Foundry mini (I can't remember which), book from Citadel's Mordheim accessory sprue.

I do have my weevils in one posted picture, but they weren't the focus of the shot so they are largely blurry:

I'll take a clearer shot when I finish up my latest round of figures so you can see them in all their ham-fisted glory lol

Always loved that character. Reminds me of someone I know quite well :'(
As a bonus, there's also a genuine Who connection. I'd forgotten Tracy Anne Oberman was in it :D

Steady on! :o :? lol lol

I love all of those doctor who minis! I really admire your work, Steve F!
-
Thank you all (blushes). I'm slowly gathering minis for the 2011 series, and for a "skeleton" outline of 2005-2009. And I've got a few bits of metal and plastic inspired by the trailer for for the series starting this autumn, so there should be more modern Doctor Who to come.

Nice work Steve F. :-*
I really appreciate the time it must take you to source out and convert all of the miniatures you use for your Dr. Who projects.
