Title: Early War Germans with GW paint. suggestions?
Post by: Ryltar Thamior on 30 August 2007, 02:19:19 AM
Hey, all.
I'm putting together some pulp gaming for my group, and was just wondering which GW colours would be best to paint up some fairly generic pre- or early- war German infantry.

Thanks.

I used Codex Grey for tunics and trousers.  And, after painting half of my force, I found out that the Germans DIDN'T blacken their equipment until later in 1915 (oh, well - I was also told that the instructions of Sept 1915 to blacken equipment was merely an acknowledgement of something that had started much earlier in the field).  At least my Jaegers have natural leather equipment (I used Snakebite Leather).

Here is a great site with info on uniforms (and much more besides!):

http://www.landships.freeservers.com/german_earlywar_uniforms.htm

And I will do you a favour and link to these models, rather than my own:

http://www.twfigurines.de/wwone/german/german01.htm

Hope that helps!

as far as i know, Tom used some Vallejo colours there, especially Field Blue for the uniform. Unfortunately GW hasnt any colour that would fit, though you can try to mix something, Codex Grey with some Blue and Space Wolves one.

I  don't use GW to paint my WWI germans, but Tamiya feld grey color.

In 1914, the german uniform is all fieldgrey
In 1915, the trousers are grey (tamiya german grey)

for good colors illustrations (and in general good illustrations for the great war) see this link : http://www.greatwardifferent.com/Great_War/index.htm

and this section for the color illustration (some documents are official recognition guides) :

Remember, this board is for World Wars I and II. The original poster didn't actually say which war he was referring to when he said "Early War". Might help a bit to know that. We've all assumed he's talking about the Great War. Not sure why.

Looks like its more expensive to equipe yourself in moldy old WWII Luftwaffe technical personell overalls than in Hugo Boss' latest and finest.
