Title: Sub/landing craft(pic heavy)
Post by: Andym on 24 November 2010, 05:06:54 PM
So I've managed to build one submarine so far. The only problem is unless I make a whole underwater board, I can't yet play any games with it :-[  So to be able to play some Gaslight games I'm planning to build a couple of landing craft to allow me to use my Nemo army I'm painting just now.

I had an idea I posted on another thread earlier I thought I might try...

This is as far as I've got just now, but even this early on I'm not happy with it! I didn't want it to take up the whole board but this diffinatly looks to wee for a start!

Someone came up with idea for a whale sub in the other thread. Would that be a better option for a landing Craft?

What if these were the tentacles of a giant squid sub?
Mariners running along the tentcle sections to get out of maybe a sort of banana splitting end section (splits into 4 parts at end)?
Just a thought but with your modelling skills I'm sure whatever you decide to do will look amazing

Neat idea.  And I like JB's suggestion for a killer whale.

BTW, I really like your concept sketches.  They're a really nice starting point.

You could do the conning tower as a separate piece.

That's a great idea Jim! The colour scheme alone would be cool! How would you make a landing ramp or door though out of the curved nose?

The squid idea bobble, I was thinking of making one ( a smallish one I might add) to fight the other sub I made in some sort of under water game. Although a squid model where half of it's submerged and you only see the top part of the body and the ends of the tentacles would be good for a boarding actions type game where you have it attacking a steamer or some sort of galleon! You could maybe five models to represent the squid, one for the body and four for the tentacles, which move independently of the body!

Inspired idea of Jim's with the killer whale and I love your concept sketch of it. :-*

Killer whale?

Don't do it! Its just Jim's way of creating an excuse to model the entire Japanese whaling fleet in 28mm (and he would probably complete the lot in about 2 weeks)  lol

Killer whale looks good.
How about the nose sliding back and up over the section behind it. Instead of opening like a mouth.
I would draw you a sketch but it would be put to shame against your drawings.
I agree the first idea is too small.

I think you should just do more awesome sketches so we can pinch the ideas  ;D

Whole head lifting up, like they do on some cargo planes, is another brilliant idea - get building

Yep, top half of the head opens upwards and is hinged at the neck?

Help!!

For some reason I'm really struggling with this one. I'm on my third attempt and I can't get the shape right! :-[. The first one was too small, the second one looked too much like a deformed shark and the third I'm not sure about. The door is only held on with blutack.

I'm afraid I tore up the second one it was that bad and I didn't take any pictures.

Any help welcome.....

I reckon you should slope the rear part of the central portion down a bit and for the opening hatch you could have it on some sort of piston system so the hatch stays in the same plane. I don't know if that makes sense and I'm trying to find a comparison.

I still think you should stick with the original LCM (Landing Craft, Mackerel ;)) concept.

The main problem with the Mk3 Prototype is, to my mind, that it does not look "fishy" - as with most vertebrae, it's usually the lower jaw that moves, and you should therefore have a "dropping ramp" based on that concept, as you did with the Mk1.

I've taken the liberty of doing a side elevation for two versions of your original concept:

As you see, the frontmost bulkhead is inclined in the direction of movement, to make it look sleeker and have the (more or less) flat front plate pose less resistance to the water, much like a pram-bowed boat often has.

The bottom variant also has a part of the "forehead" lift up to allow larger equipment to disembark - this feature would depend on how far you incline both the forehead and the jaw ramp.

Your original drawing showed a wider mouth.
Do you need to make the whole thing shorter but wider?

How about having the 'mouth' opening slide back over the body rather than hinge up?

Chris-thanks for the drawing. I think I'll stick with the whale just now and make one that looks more like an angler fish later, maybe use it as some sort of vehicle landing craft. I find myself getting frustrated as it is without scraping this try and starting again.

Jim-I took your advice and lowered the back bit a wee bit. I also added the tail section. I've still got to finish the tail, but I thought I'd let you all see it before I go any further.....

With the door, I'm going to keep with the size, but I'll make some hydraulics to lift it up over the bow using plastic pipe as pistons.

Title: Re: Sub/landing craft(pic heavy)
Post by: Andym on 10 December 2010, 10:34:11 AM
I've went and done my back in falling down steps in the ice and snow and it's making it difficult to sit modelling, but I've managed to get some work done.

To make things simple, I've glued the hatch in the 'up' position. After all it is just a gaming piece and anytime it's in the game the sailors are going to be rushing out of it anywho.

The figs are wip and I'll post proper pics of them when I'm finished. Is it worth starting a new thread with the figs or is it possible to change the header and move it onto the VSF section? Maybe start a Nemo army thread?
Title: Re: Sub/landing craft(pic heavy)

Ouch!  :o Bad to hear about your back. I hope it's nothing serious? I slipped and fell four times yesterday and twice today, but luckily, my gamer-sized posterior amply cushioned the fall. lol

As for the landing craft, that looks marvellous. Very good idea with having the head part lift off, and an airlock in the bulkhead. I would so like to steal your idea and build a victorianised Atlantean Terrorfish, if I only had the time. Maybe over Christmas vacation.

I hope you all don't mind, but i thought i would try and post some wip of the figs. I've been trying to get decent pictures but ive been struggling. Its a sad day when you can get better photos using your phone rather than a proper camera...

This ones the closest to finishing. I'm used to doing GW figs and i find the faces on these Copplestone sailors difficult! Also does anybody have a good way for painting realistic sand?

This is going to be my Captain Nemo. I've never tried patterns before, but I'm going to try something on his sash and turbin. The purple is the only thing thats finished on this model.

So what about the photos?

The landing craft hasn't really come on much. But what I have tried is making a test piece to try water effects. I know it can be done with moulds and resin but that seems like a lot of work for a gaming piece. Looking through the net there's some amazing examples out there. For my try the waves are made for polyfilla. Using a wet finger you can sculpt rough looking waves. They were then painted using a mix of GW regal blue and hawk turquiose. I bought cheap gloss wood varnish out of B&Q painted a few coats over the waves taking time to let each coat dry. I mixed some of the polyfilla and varnish and painted the tops of the waves to look like foam. In hind sight I think I should have added some White paint.

Well what do you think. Has anybody got any good water effects they have used or is there anything I should change to this that would work better?

Just paint.

With gloss.

With the varnish/polyfilla mixture.

Cheers for the comments guys. For both the water test and the figs.

Demi Morgana-the idea for the landing craft was mine but the inspired idea of making it a killer whale was jim bibbly's. So steal away! Thanks Jim by the way!

Cheers guys!

That sort of laugh belongs in overlord's james bond "For your dice only" thread, having a somewhat questionable name and stroking a large cat!

Jamesmanto-no this is just for my nemo army, but it has lead on to something bigger which a few people on this site are planning to run at next years BLAM.

Finished! I can't believe I've actually managed to complete another project before the new year! That's the beauty of this site. As well as a wealth of talent and inspiration, the comments left by other members push you to finish stuff! Anyway thanks again guys!

The whale is painted in the colours suggested jimbibbly. I'm not big on airbrushing, as I can't be bothered with all the cleaning, so all I've done here is use the cans of GW spray undercoat that I've got. It's just handy that killer whales are White and black! First it was sprayed black then I cut out holes in sheets of paper to act as templates for the spots and sprayed on the White. After that it's just a case of using washes of GW Dark flesh and chaos black to break up the solid colour and hopefully make it more interesting to look at. The chips on the armour were painted using fortress grey with dark flesh painted on top so that a thin line of the grey is left at the bottom of the 'scratch'.  The reeds on the beach are just bristles from an old paint brush.

Anyway I hope you like it...

I hope you don't mind all the pictures, but I'm quite happy how this turned out. There is some obvious mistakes, like I melted the plastic card near the top hatch when I was using a hairdryer to heat the plastic card hot enough to bend, but I like the way the water turned out ( I think it looks better than the wee test I did).

Anyway cheers!
