Title: A simple 3d Gladiator arena
Post by: Doug ex-em4 on November 25, 2010, 01:09:14 PM
While I was at CRISIS, someone stopped by to tell me about the 3D arena he'd made for our Ludus Gladiatorius game. He later sent me a picture (his name is Ludo Nauws, by the way).

What I wonder is, does this look like any kind of arena that really existed (to the best of our knowledge), perhaps a training ground or provincial venue? Or does it look totally unlikely?

I hope it has some genuine qualities because it's a nice setting and reasonably easy to make.

Doug,

it reminds me of the Amphitheatre in Windisch in Switzerland (Vindonessa in Roman times) that I visited nearly 20 years ago and more notably is mentioned by the local Governor in Asterix in Switzerland (or at least the garrison there is) Don't know it's history though.

Google view here (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=windisch&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Windisch,+Brugg,+Aargau,+Switzerland&ll=47.476289,8.213621&spn=0.002259,0.004748&t=h&z=18)

looks pretty similar anyway (bar the pillars!)
