Title: For Your Dice Only - 7TV/KKBB
Post by: Overlord on 18 December 2010, 10:44:31 AM
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/KKBB/Bond007black.jpg)(http://forbiddenplanet.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/James%20Bond%20You%20Only%20Live%20Twice%20Ken%20Adam%20set%20design.jpg)

As some LAF members will be aware I have wanted to build an underground/volcano base for a secret agent game for some time.  Other commitments prevented me doing much work on it for most of the year, but I have finally found a bit more time.  The complex will form the basis for a game at Salute (http://www.salute.co.uk) using the 7TV Rules from Crooked Dice (http://www.crooked-dice.co.uk/index.html), due out in the New Year.

Laboratory and Bio-containment facility.
You will note the air-conditioning shafts located at the rear of the lab.  Worth remembering should a discrete entry or exit be required.

The main Laboratory providing the scientific support for the global evil.

The Bio-hazard containment area.

Viewing port into the containment area.  The padded table awaiting the fate of some poor individual, no doubt.
To the right is another view of the entrance to the airlock.

An overhead view of the airlock and containment area.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The complex will be a modular build for ease of storage and tranportation.  It allows the various parts to be assembled in different layouts.  It will also enable me to use it for Aliens/Sci-Fi, Zombies, Stargate, Weird War, etc, as well as 7TV/KKBB games.

Construction is of 5mm Foam PVC walls on a 3mm MDF base covered in a tile effect embossed plastic card, forming one large room.
This can be sub-devided by a removeable air-lock and viewing port built from 3mm and 5mm foam PVC, a clear CD case and plastic card.
A/C grille is of etched brass with framing in plastic strip.

All contents and air-lock doors supplied by Mark Copplestone: http://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/range.php?range=FW
EQSET2.  Medical Examination Room
EQSET3.  Science Lab
EQSET4.  Hi-Tech Research Lab
EQ5.  Bio-Hazard Security Entrance x2

It is likely that most/all building for the complex will be done before I start painting so that I can keep an element of commonality to the finished project.

Paul, stop being awesome.

It's not fair, share a little!  lol

Seriously, really good work. Looks like this is going to be another very active blog! :)

Nice one Paul - am glad you are doing this.

This exact same thing was my suggestion for the Frothers Salute game a couple of years back, but we went with zombies instead - its still on my list to do one day, but thankfully someway back down the to-do list.

I look forward to seeing your take on it - am sure the quality will be top notch throughout.

Wonderful Paul. Been looking forward to this production!  :D

Will there be a shark tank and a missile silo?  ;)

And a Goldfinger-esque model of Fort Knox - diorama within a diorama style, that rises from the boardroom table?

Very very nice. I'll be following this closely all the better to acquire your secrets Mr Overlord. Underground modular bases seem all the rage as two days ago I just cut the hardboard tiles for mine.

Just a question on the airshafts. Will you be opening up the ends to connect to other tiles or will you be abstracting it during play. Curious.

What a fantastic-looking project.

Construction is of 5mm Foam PVC walls on a 3mm MDF base covered in a tile effect embossed plastic card, forming one large room.

After your Geezers building epic, I'm a tiny bit disappointed that you're not hand-scribing the floor tiles though!  ;)  :D

Thanks for all the feedback/encouragement chaps.  :)

Will there be a shark tank and a missile silo?  ;)
Definately a shark tank (already part-built) and more a launch tower than a silo.

And a Goldfinger-esque model of Fort Knox - diorama within a diorama style, that rises from the boardroom table?
Not sure I've got space currently but wish I had thought of that.  Something to build post-Salute to include in my own games.

Curious.
I've been following your Hadleys Hope thread with great interest as an Aliens fan and for possible ideas/tips for this project.  8)

The airshafts are generally modelled as closed at the edge of each 'module' (the shafts add stregth to the 'modules' as most are open on one side) as I intend eventually using them in various configurations at a later date, though they are deemed continuous for game purposes.  The shafts are over-sized really but I built them big enough to place a based miniature in the shaft for gameplay purposes.  After all, shouldnt every secret lair have such a system of ducts to allow the heroes adequate entrance/exit!

How big is the base going to be when finished?
Current plans are 3'x3' but will likely be extended post Salute.

Will it include a monorail and the orange boiler suited gentlemen you can see in the pic?
I've run out of space on the Salute board, but I definately want a monorail at some point.  Copplestone boiler-suited goons are sat awaiting paint although the Salute game miniatures will likely be provided by Uti Long Smile from his great collection.

In general I have constraints as to what I can build due to lack of storage space (Geezers takes up more room than any other project I have).  I have a very long way to go to get vaguely close to the original inspiration by Ken Adam http://www.jamesbondwiki.com/page/Blofeld's+Volcano+Lair

The Prisoner..... no, not some quaint, picturesque village.

Where would an Evil Overlord TM be without somewhere to secure his captives prior to explaining his devious plans for world domination in detail.  Of course it is specified in the secret lair planning regulations that there should be an adequate means of escape from an otherwise impregnable headquarters, hence the handy grills leading to the air duct system.

The cellblock shown with the (Ainsty/Old Crow http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/aiblastwall.htm ) blastwalls that will form the exterior walls of the 'rooms' part of the complex.  In the foreground is a scratch-built entrance door.  At the far (currently empty) end of the block will be something where the major villain will have an expectation of the heroes demise.

The solid cell doors and slightly less secure air duct grills. (The front is only blu-tacked in place at the moment)

A view of the cells from the opposite side.

Closer detail of a miniature inside the air ducts.

Construction is again 3 and 5mm foam PVC on an MDF base.

Be seeing you.....  o_o

Unfortunately cheap resin does pong and is not good for your health at all, (as in cheaper materials not poor casting results).

At the far (currently empty) end of the block will be something where the major villain will have an expectation of the heroes demise.

Once the hero is strapped to the device ready for his demise will the major villain trumpet on for five minutes, revealing his plans for world domination/destruction and thus revealing any flaws in his nefarious machinations which the hero will be sure to exploit after his imminent escape?

Great work on the build, you make it look so easy. Where do you source your foam PVC from?

Control Centre  The satellite is now over... Kansas

Every major villain needs somewhere to monitor the progress of his latest plan for world domination.  Of course a 'Self-destruct' button is fitted as standard.

Overall view of the Control Centre with Ainsty/Old Crow Blastwalls and doorway.  The upper level is completely separate so that I can use the basic walled module for other things (same as the Laboratory module).

The upper floor is clear (and only part assembled here, ignore the plastic strip lying around).  Once again the air-ducting and grills at the back of the room.

Right-hand side with Laboratory next door.  Floating staircase to the upper level.

Left-hand side with upper level door to adjacent module.

More foam PVC for walls and stairs.  CD cases for clear flooring.

Copplestone equipment. http://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/range.php?range=KKB
KKBBX1 Secret Base Control Room Set
KKBBX2 Missile Silo Control Room Set
KKBB303 Databank

A large world map/video screen will be added above the upper level wall.

There will definately be a 'Blofeld' chair but it will likely be in another room....

Not quite! I did buy all the Copplestone resin in one go so got a small discount from Mark.
All the Ainsty/Old Crow items (and there is a lot more than has appeared so far) was picked up very cheaply from a second-hand trader at Colours and the B&B at Milton Keynes in 2009.  Given the price and time saved I decided to use it rather than build everything from scratch (Yes I know this is the same person that has the little brick fetish!)

It just gets better and better, its a pity you will have to blow it up at the end of the game :D
lol Excellent Phil

Villains Lounge:

A sort of retreat and all-purpose room for when "No.1" wants to get away from all the flashing lights and buzzing, clicking sounds of the busy Command Center (tends to upset the cat, too!).  The Lounge serves as personal office, conference room, relaxation area and rumpus room. It also has a combination disciplinary feature/discrete "waste-management" system.

Nice stone flooring and walling provides a relaxing environment.  The (removeable) doorway leads to a lift-shaft/escape pod/etc.

Stairs leading up to the "pool" area, with bridge and doorway into the Command Centre.

Very relaxing to watch fish swimming in a tank.  Just dont disappoint the boss too much......

Construction, once again is MDF and foam PVC with some plastic card for the walls and flooring.  The pool surface is clear perspex, but the protective film is still on it currently.  Unlike the previous modules this one has 4 walls as, at a later date, I will use it (minus the sharks) as part of a luxury house complex on a hill/mountain top ("I see you've met my friends Bambi and Thumper").

No other items acquired/built yet for the interior.  I do need to build a large, high-backed leather chair though.  Sharks (now OOP) from HLBS.

Absolutely brilliant, it's great to see how it's supposed to be done from the ground up. I have been using foamcore for buildings, how does the foamed PVC compare for ease of cutting - I usually have lots of windows! Also what glue to do you on the PVC?

Foam PVC cuts fairly easily.  Use a sharp blade and make several passes to get the cut rather than try and force it in a single go.  Obviously the thinner sheets cut very easily.  5mm is a little harder but is fine with multiple passes.  It is much stronger than foamcore so you can use thinner foam PVC for the same result.  3mm is still stronger than 5mm foamcore.

For glue I use a thick superglue (Rocket Max).  Edges bond exceptionally well and minor sanding or keying helps on the flat faces.  Generally very strong, just dont make a mistake with it (as I have done on several occasions) as the bond (:D) is very hard to break!

Stonking architecture, as usual, Paul. I've always been drawn to KKBB but refrained because of the project load I already have. You are making it twice as hard.

This foam PVC has the marks of being the Next Great Material after cork board. Where does one find it? Atenociti?

I used to work in a sign store, and we used the PVC board almost exclusively. While it is stronger and more warp resistant than foamboard or styrene sheet, it is more expensive, and harder to get a hold of. Its strength also makes is harder to cut. We used Stanley knives to cut it. I would not want to cut buildings with lots of windows out of it. You also have to watch the corners and edges, as you can chip them. We had to remake several signs for that reason. It would make an excellent base for making buildings that were going to have lots of detail added to them (Window frames glued to the PVC, using the PVC as the wall and window glass.)

Yes, thats it.  I bought a few test pieces from Jed and then the 1mm and 2mm as I didnt need large quatities of them.  I've still got loads of 5mm and 3mm, but the 8'x4' sheets are comparatively cheaper than buying smaller sheets.

As dbsubashi said cutting windows into 5mm would be a bit labourious.  3mm wouldnt be so bad and is proably all you would need for most buildings.  My external walls are 5mm (a touch of over-engineering on my part) but with few holes needing to be cut in it.

The small factory from my Geezers game is made from 3mm.  All the doors and brickwork are scribed into the foam PVC which is a big advantage of the material (if you are so inclined...)

Stairs:

The floating staircase is prevalent in villainous lairs so was an obvious, iconic thing to include.    Rather than being truly to scale I wanted a set of steps that could have miniatures placed on them.  Foam PVC (sorry to keep banging on about it!) was an easy solution to the relative weakness of the design, being just a central riser with multiple steps.  I used 5mm for the riser and 3mm for the steps.

I decided on a 5mm gap between each step.  First marking out the riser with the step positions 8mm apart (vertical).  The depth varied with each set of steps, depending on how steep I required them.  For this set it was 10mm (horizontal).  Each step was 40mm wide and 20mm deep.  The 5mm gap gives ample room to fit a figure base but means I could use 5mm foamcore spacers. Foamcore was used as if I did mange to superglue it to the staircase it would be easier to remove than foam PVC spacers.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/KKBB/WIP/Stairs06.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/KKBB/WIP/Stairs04.jpg)

I used a piece of MDF to keep the alignment of the steps true as I superglued each one in place.  Once I had figured out the construction it proved straightforward to adapt the design to fit specific sizes for different parts of the table.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/KKBB/WIP/Stairs05.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/KKBB/WIP/Stairs07.jpg)

Once built they are just about stable enough to stand freely, although mine will be secured to other parts of the scenery.  The top step on this one is slightly different to fit the intended location.  As you can see a miniature base fits easily into the gaps.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/KKBB/WIP/Stairs08.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/KKBB/WIP/Stairs09.jpg)

Walkways:

You have to have walkways.  How else is the average goon expected to fall from a great height into the chemical tank/machinery/shark pool/etc?

Pretty straight-forward to build, using MDF, embossed plastic card and wire mesh.  The only difficulty is getting the mesh to bend evenly, which I did with a steel ruler and my desktop.  I could have used seperate railings for each side and drilled a series of holes in the MDF to fit them, but keeping the mesh as one pice was less time-consuming and a bit stronger.

I also needed a tower to support the middle of two walkways.  I used 2 Blastwall pieces and mounted them back to back on a piece of MDF then added a floorpiece on top.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/KKBB/WIP/Walkways08.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/KKBB/WIP/Walkways06.jpg)

I added embossed plastic card to the sides and a hex-platformer ladder to one side and built an access door for the other.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/KKBB/WIP/Walkways04.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/KKBB/WIP/Walkways05.jpg)

This was enough to raise the Old Crow tower I already had to the required height.  Tower & walkways.

Looks like he came to a dead end.....

Slowly Spinning Fans

What is this thing? I mean, it serves no useful purpose for there to be a bunch of chompy, spinny things in the middle of a hallway. No, I mean we shouldn't have to do this, it makes no logical sense, why is it here?

A couple of PC fans I kept when dismantling a broken computer years ago...... I knew I would need them for something.
MDF base with foam PVC top and sides.  Wire mesh railings and a bit of embossed plastic card to tidy them up a little.

Built these on a whim as they are not in the design for the Salute game.  They will get used at some point anyway!

Looks like he came to a dead end.....

Yes, although currently only if you spin them with your finger.  In theory you could wire them up, but they would spin a bit too fast.  (Yes I know I could wire in a variable resistor...)

(Yes I know I could wire in a variable resistor...)

The, Words, Mouth, out, take... rearrange ;).

What about just a standard resistor? A variable might take up too much space what with the battery, miniatures and invisible flying bullets!?! Go on, you know you want to...  lol

Mysterious energy waves are interfering with U.S. missile launches.

Satellite toppler, Thermonuclear bomb, Doomsday device, computer core?  Could be any of them.  Failing that just something to hide behind as the bad guys shoot at you.

More distracted messing about with odds & ends.  This time based on an old processor chip with attached fan and a chunky pen top from a Mrs Overlord Christmas cracker ("You dont need than pen for anything do you?"  "Why, what are you going to build with it?"  "I have plans .....Muahahahaha!").

Hercules Class Rocket of the Albion Rocket Consortium:

Hawaii to Jupiter 16. Repeat: Hawaii to Jupiter 16. There is an unidentified object on our screen, closing fast.

Pigs in spaaaaaace! Oops, wrong tag line.  :D
The basis for my rocket, helpfully suggested by Jeroas recently (£1.50 each from Tesco post-Christmas)

After dis-assembling the rocket, removing the sweets and the mechanism I extended the body of the rocket with plastic card.  The gaps left by the removed mechanism were filled or covered up.  The engine nozzle came from a toy (Acquired ages ago from a car boot sale) glued to a 60mm base.

After putting it all back together (After C-130 Hercules-like cut and shunt, hence the name).  I just need to fill the 4 screw holes before painting.  I may also add an entry hatch on one side to marry up with the Launch Gantry (Under construction)

It stands 13.5 inches (34cm) high and is rather short & fat compared to real rockets, but conveys the idea well enough.  The clear windows should be far less evident once it is painted.
Slow progress currently, after the festive break productivity.  ::)

A rather belated update after some unavoidable real-world issues.

CapCom to Jupiter 16. Can you confirm O2 pressure is within limit.
Roger. Everything looks good in the environmental control system

Launch Gantry:

Based upon part of a Matchbox Mega-Rig space playset I acquired some time ago at a car boot sale for £2 (along with other items and contained in a plastic storage box that still had the £1.99 pricetag on it - bargain!).  I removed some of the interior workings and a battery pack, peeled off a load of old stickers, then gave the whole thing a good clean.

I forgot to take a photo of it before I started construction, but below is the gantry with a foam PVC/MDF box added in the initial stages:

I wanted to build a liftshaft from the lower level up to the walkway that would lead to the spacecraft.  The cage style shaft was made from a single piece of galvanised wire bent into a box shape.  This proved rather difficult to do accurately, but I eventually acheived something that wasn't too lob-sided.  Wooden dowelling was used to add some strength, which would locate in holes in the base section.  On the right is the roof of the liftshaft with a winch housing built from the spares box (bits of a Star Wars Snowspeeder included):
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/KKBB/WIP/Gantry04.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/KKBB/WIP/Gantry06.jpg)

The upper walkway was built from MDF with galvanised wire railings.  You can also see the copper wire I used to tie the open edges of the liftshaft together:

The various items loosely fitted together:

I built-up the underside of the walkway and added a moveable (during the game) section to dock with the spacecraft:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/KKBB/WIP/Gantry08.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/KKBB/WIP/Gantry10.jpg)

Some additional superstructure for the liftshaft:

The Launch Gantry joins up with the elevated walkways:

I may add a little more detailing if time permits.  Painting everything in time for Salute is the challenge now...  ::)

Wow... :o

As far as additionnal detailing goes, a few hoses (which don't require paint!) could add something to this already incredible setting. Can't wait to see it painted!

I am going to Salute for the sole purpose of picking up the 7TV rulebook (other stuff may accidently fall into my eager grubby hands and exceed my budget as well) and can't wait to see this

Thaks for the continued support chaps.  :)

A minor update on the build.  A couple of photos of the painted Helipad:

(Finding that silver is a pain to photograph)

Lots more painted, but very little time to play around with taking photos currently.
How many weeks until Salute?  ;)

Do you expect me to talk?
No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die.

Where would any self-respecting Evil Villain be without the means to dispatch his arch-advesary?

The table and frame are of foam PVC and plastic card.  The laser is various diameters of plastic and copper tubing with brass rod for the laser beam.  Copper wire is wound around the narrower tubing.

The finished item.  Ready to cut large slabs of gold down to a more manageable size.  Works on secret agents too!

Besides, there's always so much going on around Mr. Goldfinger. It would be a shame not to accept his hospitality.

Of course you need somewhere to detain your victim, giving him ample opportunity to prise off the air grille and make good his escape.

Foam PVC walls, MDF base with plastic card doors and grilles of brass mesh and plastic strip.

The completed module (apart from the free-standing control panel, currently being painted):

Evil or not, they have to keep to the building code, and that calls for a air duct for every prison cell at least crawling pace wide. These things are very important to stick to you know!

Quote from: Overlord
Where would an Evil Overlord TM be without somewhere to secure his captives prior to explaining his devious plans for world domination in detail.  Of course it is specified in the secret lair planning regulations that there should be an adequate means of escape from an otherwise impregnable headquarters, hence the handy grills leading to the air duct system.

The Hadleys Hope project by Braz, put the idea in my head. It seemed such an obvious thing to do.  Despite this, at the Salute playtest last Saturday, Karl's imprisoned Astronauts removed the grille in the first turn then spent nearly the whole game deciding what they should do.  And they were rocket scientists!  :?  :D

Just finishing off the resin and a few odds'n'ends.

Rather fitting that Osato Oshiro Model Terrain should be next to a game based on 'You Only Live Twice'
Watch out for duelling helicopters and gyrocopters over your table.  :D

Glad you like it.  :)

The layout and scenario is very loosely based on the Bond film 'You Only Live Twice'.

The Villains are in two groups:
Daedalus Pleasance, his faithful sidekick Oni and security guards attempt to thwart the Heroes as their computer technicians try to speed the rocket launch.  Dr Mao and his femdroids assist in preventing the security breach, as technicians move to load the nerve gas payload onto the rocket.

The Heroic forces of Department X are also split between 2 players:
Dr Hugo Soloman, Pandora King and 3 frogmen have been previously captured and thrown into the cells with the astronauts from the captured rocket.  They must escape and prevent the rocket launch.  General Gordon, Big Tam and a squad of Extraordinary Agents arrive by gyrocopter and abseil rope into the volcano lair tasked with stopping the rocket countdown and preventing the deadly cargo reaching the rocket.

Crooked Dice should be releasing the scenario as a free 7TV download in the near future: www.crooked-dice.co.uk/

This post will self-destruct in 5 seconds. 5........4........3......
