It's been a while since my last VSF outing. But now I finally succumbed to the lure that is VSF and brought out a few minis.
I've been in a bit of a limbo with regards to what rules to use. And for this game we chose to use the Epic Armageddon rules. I has a nice command and control element, and the units are capable of moving a lot around the table, which makes it quite tactical. Obviously better suited (and only intended) for larger games.
Here's the start set up. Unfortunately I only have 1 army myself, and my opponent had none. So I had to "invent" a Martian coalition out of whatever I had lying around.
The following may thus appear a bit chaotic. But in reality this has always been the core of my VSF. Vild syg fantasi - wild crazy imagination.

The two train sets, the Prussian camp and the little camp with the cars were the objectives.

The Martians choose to move forwards with their walkers as the first thing.
On both sides.
Wobbly wobbly get an objective.
The Martians had Raal Magumbo in there ranks. He had of course brought some POW's to the party.
A horrible blop was seen in the distant horizon flanked by Martian chickens.
A local brainwashed tyrannosaur tried to get to a Prussian combat walker.
The automatons move forward at the flank
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/clovermilk/victorian%20sci-fi/Epic%20VSF%20testspil%201/P1180837.jpg)
And everyone else is trying to hug some objectives.
...both hither and dither
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/clovermilk/victorian%20sci-fi/Epic%20VSF%20testspil%201/P1180841.jpg)
Much to my disappointment the sailors soon faced a Martian ray cannon. Luckily it turned out that ray cannon made a lot more noise than actual damage.
Meanwhile the tyranosaur had found and maimed the first Prussian combat walker.
Chaos
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/clovermilk/victorian%20sci-fi/Epic%20VSF%20testspil%201/P1180845.jpg)
The punch cards and tube amps of the automatons must have been overloaded, when they decided to advance up to the savage Martian wild men and fire at them. The Martians soon retaliated.
Some of the brave sailors run efter the meeting with the ray guns. A big unknown Martian dino follows suit.
Left to themselves the rest of the seamen had to deal with it. Luckily a steam tank was able to plough through the first Martian walker. To the effect that the rest of the walkers ran off scared.
A daring move from the dinosaur overwhelmes the Prussian high command. They were convinced that it would stay in pursuit of the sailors, but instead it chose to attack the steam tank.
And that steam tank got it!
The Martian chicken launch a daring attack againt the sailors holding the objective. They move into firefight distance.
Much to their dismay they roll abysmally poor and lose the combat against all odds.
The lone surviving chicken run off never to be seen again.
The Martian Overlord chooses to take action. He attacks the sailors alone and unsupported. They get a beating. It's always hard to defend when you've been shot and is attacked by fresh enemy.
Blop takes another objective.
And the dino contests the last one.
2-0 victory to the Martian Coalition and a nice field test of Epic VSF. I really like the manoeuvrability of the system. I guess it does seem a bit strange that there's both "firing" and "firefighting", where the last one is close combat with guns at 6'' distance. But then again... not a major problem, if even any problem.
I think it's easily outweighed by the host of things I find good about the game.

Absolutely cracking stuff and a very inventive set up! I like! :-* :-*
-
Now that is one heck'va a set-up! :-*
Love all the little "weird" stuff you use in the game... mushrooms, beetles... great atmosphere.
Where did you get the Martian Walkers?

Thank you!
They're from Star Wars. I don't know what or why. Some type of droid spider if I recall correctly.

Thank you mr. Copper. lol I'm still looking forward to seeing your set up of the city you told me about at BLAM.

Lovely pictures and a great report. The 4 legged spidery things are Homing Spider Droids.
-
Ok, the martian walkers, the automata, the prussian walkers, Blorp, and the red vehicles...where did you get them? You have awakened in me a great deal of VSF avarice.
-
Very good job! The martians are awesome!
-
the red vehicles...where did you get them?
I believe that those are coaches from the Golden Compass movie. Should be readily available on eBay.

Haha and you taught me a new word! :)
The cars are indeed from the golden campass... Found them at £1 in Toys*R*Us.
Blorp is also an old toy.. from the beginning of the 90'ties. "Garbage animals" or "sewer-"somethings.
The prussian walkers and the automata are from Ironclad. And the Martian walkers are star wars spider homing droids from Wizards of the Coat.
I love VSF!

I love the buggalos - they're absolutely brilliant!
-
Great stuff! A veritable Calamity Salad

I loved reading that report. Thank you! :-*

Awesome set-up and miniatures! :-*

Indeed, a far better description than my use of "weird." Must remember that word for future reference. 8)

Looked like a fun game :D
Interesting you are using Epic 40K as the rule set for 28mm VSF. I have always enjoyed Epic as one of the evil empire's better rule systems.
Did you have to modify the rules a lot to get it to work?
Cheers
Fuzzy.

love the set up!!!!!! :o :-*

Not at all actually. We discussed changing charges to double range. But that's about it. We didn't change anything for the game in question though.
Main part was figuring out stats for the vehicles and funny stuff.
The EA is really just a large skirmish, so it's easily adoptable. :`

Impromptu to the point of maniacal! Excellent!
I've often considered the droids; have a couple at home along with other SW psuedo-cliccies for tranformation, but they look perfect as is, in the right setting.
I love it when 'maniacal' can mean 'brilliant'.
Of course, I'll also have to dig out the Golden Compass 'Hansoms' as well.
