Title: No school like old school(Im back! Jan 9th 2012 Grenadier skeleton warband)
Post by: Damien on January 05, 2011, 03:03:41 AM
Hello everyone, I just introduced myself in ‘introductions’ and I wanted to post something right away. A little about me, I love old school Dungeons & Dragons, I started playing way back in ’83 with this edition.

I started painting Ral Partha miniatures almost immediately with Testors glossy models paints (you can imagine the results). Even though today’s miniatures are much better sculpted I still love painting old school Citadel, Ral Partha and Grenadier minis. Well, enough talk here are a couple of pictures (I hope I get better at taking pics, its more difficult taking a good pic than painting miniatures).

First off we have a Dwarf champion from Ral Partha

And secondly we Ratscum from Grenadier, my all time favorite ‘Skaven’ type rat race miniatures.

I hope to be updating this post with more old school goodness soon, let me know what you think.

Thanks,
 Damien

Really nice metallics on that platemail.

Very nice.  I too am a fan of the old Ral Partha stuff, and that Dwarf has always been one of my favorites.
Small suggestion on the pictures; since you are taking pics of single figs, if you crop the pics so that there is not so much background, the figs will be show cased much better.

Hope you post more.

I love the good old D&D, started playing around the same time. So I can really relate to your old school approach to miniatures - though I personally like some of the recent stuff a little better. Anyway, great to have you onboard this forum.

Wellcome! Very nice minis, I hope you'll post more soon! I'm especially fond of the detail on the dwarf's helmet.

I too am a sucker for oldschool lead, but mostly Citadel in my collection. You should check out my blog (linked in my sig).

I recently unearthed my collection of Ral Partha, Grenadier and Citadel minis, dating from the late 1970s to the mid 1980s. (All painted with Testors as well).

A walk down memory lane! Love the Ratman mini.

Welcome Damien - I also started off with the old red rule book many years ago.

In fact I have been slowly filling out my old school modules off e-bay of late after coming across my collection during a house move.

If you like figures for this era then try the Otherworld stuff - some of the best modern, old style around IMHO:

WELCOME ABOARD!

The minis look TERRIFIC...you can't keep an old mini down. I agree that you did a FINE job on the metal work. The Rat Scum Lads were always a favorite; Grenadier came out with some very cool stuff. VERY WELL DONE!
I got my introduction to fantasy with T.S.R's incomprehensible D&D boxed set...it was my sole gamining interest until WotC took over. Ah the memories!

Awesome figs!  Welcome!

I usually collect old school citadel, but some ral partha and grenadier crept in recently and I have started down that slippery slope too.

Currently building up a dungeon of early 1980's monsters!

Thank you all for the warm welcome!

@Froggy, thanks for the compliment.

@m4jumbo, I love all the dwarfs that Tom Meiers sculpted and thanks for the tip on cropping photos, my next pics are all cropped.

@Doomhippie, I just introduced Basic D&D to my niece and nephew and they loved it, really fired up their imagination. I like the new sculpts as well, I just cant do plastics (I think I'm an old f*rt).

@phreedh, I love your blog! I've been there a few times, actually I bought a few miniatures from Mega Minis because of you. I like Citadel minis as well, I'll post some pics of them soon.

@SBRPearce, I could never figure out why GW clothed all their skaven with robes, that is why I like the ratscum figs, just a giant rat with a weapon.

@Heldrak, Yeah I painted these in the last couple of weeks, I'll put up an old testors paint job some day so we could have a laugh. :D

@Colonel Tubby, funny you should say that I have been trolling ebay for the 'Against the Giants' modules as well. I really like Otherworld minis, the sculpts are fantastic, I used to also go and view their Citadel AD&D site as well (I cant find it any more did they take it down?).

@DeafNala, Thanks, its good to get some feedback on the minis.

@kingofdaveness, You are my hero! I love your style, I go to you site all the time, your minis remind me of my youth drooling over all the hex based minis in WhiteDwarf. Cant wait to see your 80's monsters.

Here are some more pics, it is a Knight with Hammer from Mega Minis (phreedh's fault)

Once again thanks for the warm welcome and C&C are always welcome.

Cool! I made an impression! =) Glad I could direct some of your money towards John over at Mega!

Nice one, those minis are such great value for money! Were they priced like a GW mini, it would be a rip-off but at that price, they're not only good. They're good enough! Looking forward to your Citadel stuff, but it's cool seeing all these nice minis I don't know about. Never had much to do with Ral Partha as a young'un. I do have some old grenadier minis I dug out of a box at my parents' place though, but mostly we got Prince August and later on Heartbreaker minis in our local toy stores in Sweden. Didn't have any RPG/minis stores close until I was "too old to play with toy soldiers". I'm glad I grew out of that silly idea. ;)

Great stuff, lovely metalwork on the dwarf and the knight. The cropped piccies are much better, thanks! My main problem with some old models is that the true 25mm models are just too small to fit into a Warhammer army nowadays.

Nice one - really like the dwarf in particular - I'm another citadelaholic trying to steer clear of Ral Partha and Grenadier although that might prove tricky if you keep posting such great minis!

Hello everyone

@phreedh, Mega Minis have awesome deals, I bought a batch before they raised their prices (in Nov). If I am not mistaken, I beleive that most of their minis are from the old Grenadier range.

@DeafNala, Thanks for the compliment.

@Pil, you are right about the size of the minis of course, they are on the small size, here is a comparison pic.

From right to left: GW Empire,  Mega Mini, GW/Maurader Empire, WOTC Chainmail (WIP).

@Thantsants, come to the dark side! Actually all OOP minis are great, full of a lot of character.

Actually the Mega Minis I'm most familiar with are Hobby Products...a German Company that features Michael Iming & a young Werner Klocke as sculptors. They're true 25mm as opposed to the current 28-32mm minis.

Nice stuff!
I'm a big Ral Partha/Grenadier fan too.

True that they're a bit small against the newest stuff but if you've got a handful of them they're great for a SoBH force or some other skirmish game... and of course lovely for RPGs.

The Grenadier stuff is more true 25mm while the Hobby Products / Metal Magic are more true 28mm. Here's a comparison I did in another thread:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=17333.msg227531#msg227531

The two in the middle here are Metal Magic, flanked by two contemporary Citadel figs. They're roughly the same size. More examples in the thread I linked to.

Btw, Damien - if you're in need of some great old giants, trolls and such I can recommend the Splintered Lights collection of old Metal Magic big guys, they're originally 28/25mm giants so fit very well with your era of miniatures. The dragons are also really nice and very good value! I have  a comparison of them here:

Hello everyone, I just changed my avatar as I noticed that I had the same one as
Gun Bunny (sorry about that Gun Bunny).

I've never had the time to wargame though I would love to be able to (I'm a perpetual student); someday soon I hope. I would love to try FUBAR, Songs of Blades and Heros, Pulp basically skirmish games.

@phreedh, Oh no, no, no I am not taking any more recommendations from you, a few weeks ago I bought over twenty minis from Mega because of you  :). I listen to you any more and I'll have no money for tuition. Actually thr Splintered Light/Metal Magic minis are really nice and I have been eye balling them for a while.

Also, I need some help, I dont know what to do with the shield, does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for looking

Damien you bastard ;) Stop posting delicious Ral Partha minis or I'll have to expand my obsessions! =( Really nice work on the scales, I've just painted an old Citadel fighter with scale armour and didn't pay as much attention to it. Think I'll have to touch it up a bit before posting. ;) Only suggestion with your dwarf would be to paint the decorations on the axe blade in gold or another contrasting metal (mithril?).

Regarding the shield, how about painting it black with a metal border? Then copy the symbols from the axe head onto the shield, in the same colour as on the axe.

@phreedh: I dug out the Hobby Products Bar Room set to check out the size; you are right on; the bar keep was exactly 28mm from the top of the base to the top of his head...which comes up to a Ral Partha serving wench's chin & the shoulder of a Reaper bar maid. AND thanks for disagreeing...I spent a very enjoyable hour or so going through some old minis looking for the Hobby Product mini; I owe you one, Amigo!

Hey manic _miner, they are great sculpts, I have some goblins from the 80's that I'll get around to posting as well.

phreedh post the pic soon, I really like those old Citadel fighters. Also, thanks for the great idea for the shield, I am going to try it.

Here is a Citadel Wight, I figure I should put something up for all the Citadelaholics.

Very nice miniatures. I really like how the metals turned out.. I always have a soft spot for roleplay miniatures. There is something in there that can't be compared with wargame ministures for me.

Nice painting on that wight, needs a shield though. I have that model and used it as a Chaos Warrior of Nurgle after a new face and sword swap. They aren't exactly my favourite models either but you did a good job on him 8)

I really have to say it's a pleasure to look at your minis. They are really wonderful and I like your style of painting a lot. I've seen so many over-done miniatures that it's really a wonderful break to see some high quality painting without any unnerving extra bits and pieces and whatnot. Thanks a lot for that.

I'm enjoying te pictures!

We have a ton of old Ral Partha (maybe two tons) and a lot of Grenadier.  A couple of old RP figures saw actions as NPCs in last night's D&D game.  We also have a fair number of the old Citadel figures, but there are gaps, alas - years when they was no one accessible to me selling them (and I was in school and had little $$ for figures).

Hi phreedh, your right about these models, all the wights during this period were over the top. Almost all of them had huge bat wings on thier helmets, that is why this is the only one I picked up on ebay.

Braxandur, the old role playing minis (Ral, Grend, early Citadel) along with the Reaper today have some great poses, giving them lots of character. Wargame minis have to fit into rank and file and they seem a little stiff to me (Don`t get me wrong though I love all minis).

Hi Pil, yeah whenever I get to the shield my mind goes blank. I wish I was more like
Neldoreth, I'm going to read his great tutorial on painting shields (on his website).

Thanks Doomhippie, means a lot to me, I've been a closet painter for so long(I don't know about the rest of you but I don`t talk about the hobby with my peers), its good to finally get some feedback.

mweaver, I'd love to see some pics of your minis.

Well to continue with the theme I present to you a Ral Partha Chaos Centuar.

Hmm just noticed his face is a little blurred. I tried to paint him as a steppe pony, kind of shaggy and two toned; I used short little brush strokes to simulate hair.

Thanks everyone and let me know what you think

Very nice, the fur got good texture and you did a nice transition between skin and fur. I like it!

The hind part looks a bit odd, probably it's the near vertical line of transition between the two colours of the fur on his right hand side. It's most visible in the top picture. Shading is a bit heavy on the white too, but I'm just nitpicking now. =)

Nice job on that centaur, Damien!

I don't have many pictures of my figures up on the web, yet.  I think there are a few on my brother's blog.  Let me see if I can figure out how to stick in a picture...

The classic old Citadel, Ral Partha and Grenadier figures I have painted I mostly painted back in the day, so they are not up to my more recent standards.  But I do hope to paint some old Citadel figures this year - mainly villagers and thieves for our D&D games.

Hello everyone, thanks for the comments.

phreedh, nitpick away serious feedback is want I am looking for (with a few 'cool mini!' thrown in a few times)  :D

Thanks m4jumbo

Thantsants, I've been searching ebay for a few of those they are really nice sculpts, a little too expensive when they do show up.

Thanks DeafNala, now get painting on those 'cause they are some of my favorite minis and I want to see some painted up :)

Thanks Anatoli, I really like your bloodbowl minis as I already stated in your thread I now want to paint up a bloodbowl team.

Erny, an old school unit may be coming soon  ::)

Thanks kingofdaveness, you are the king of old school.

mweaver, the expressions on the female and goblin are great, who makes them?

The next mini is an old Citadel 'paladin in chainmail' I bought this guy in the 80's and must have re-painted him ten times till now. He used to represent my paladin in our old D&D games. I painted him up a while ago as a crusader with a sandy base.

Allthough defenitly not sculpted as well as a lot of the newer miniatures, these models speak for themselves!

Hi Pil, I should have put more effort into the base after all that painting but as I stated before I am sick of repainting this guy (one of my first minis from way back in the 80's). Thanks for the comments though.

Braxandur, thanks for the positive comment, yeah these minis are small (true 25mm) and a little rough around the edges but they do have character.

The next mini I am posting is a Grenadier knight, I bought him with a lot of minis from ebay so I don`t have much info on him. I like him a lot, there is some nice 'movement' in the sculpt, especially with the robes.

Thanks for that guys, he was a cool knight to paint up. I tried painting him up in a black and white scheme, I painted a few highlights of dark grey on the black that did not show up on the picture. I found this guy really cool 'cause you almost always see a knight with a sword and rarely with other weapons.

Thanks for the support

Hi everyone, Uni has started and I have been swamped. I just finished this unit (only took me over 6 months), I'm a slow painter. They are Grenadier miniatures from thier 'BladeStorm' miniature range (actually a boxed set of wargame rules, perhaps to compete with GW). Actual name for the minis are 'Axe-men of Yolmer'.
They were fun to paint and pretty big, I would say they are heroic 28s.

As always C&C are welcome, thanks for looking

Thanks phreedh, means a lot. What are you working on at the present? I was at your site recently and saw your Heroquest minis; I too painted tons of those ugly orcs. Personally I think the Heroquest zombie sculpt is one of the best fantasy zombies to date.

Trying to complete enough minis to have a team or two ready for the next season of Lead Painters League... Got a baby boy coming any day now, won't have much time to paint for a while so need to sock a few minis away for the LPL.

Yeah, the HQ zombie is great! Never painted any of them. Will "eventually" paint them up to play with the sprog when he's old enough. With my glacial pace, I might be done with them when he's 18 or so.

Wow, congratulations on the son!! When he is old enough you'll take him into your man cave and show him how to paint then you two will wargame together; you must be so excited.

Cheers

I like that unit. It looks nice, has a good quality for any tabletop gaming that comes in mind. I know how hard it is to paint regiments, I more often than not don't finish them. But this one looks really good.

The old paladin... well, nicely painted as well but you can see the tear and wear of his long life. I have a bunch of these old ealry 80's miniatures and have noted the same thing happening to them. The details and hard edges tend to become more and more rounded and in the end a lot of detail is just plain gone. As I said, I like your painting but there is only so much we can do with our old heroes.

Still, bring 'em on, I like looking at your models and your painting style.

I thought I knew all the later Grenadier miniatures but I don't recognise these. I like them, a nice unit, just what we want to see from the advocates of old school.

Top painting too.

Hi Doomhippie, you are right those old lead minis get a little 'soft'. Thanks for the comments, I'm thinking of painting up some Rogue Trader Orks next, those guys have tons of character, I am going to use the old 80's supplement 'Ere we go' as inspiration.

Love the bases too - you do good grass!  :D

Thats what my girlfriend said, boom boom, thanks I'll be here all week  lol

Hi Erny, I went to your blog yesterday and really enjoyed it. I just played 'Keep on the borderlands' last month with my niece and nephew (thier first intro to DnD) and they loved it. No minis or tiles just thier imagination, they really got into the game.
BTW your orc unit is awesome, I love those old models. What is your recipe for ork skin?

Thanks all

Thanks for looking not much on their yet and I really want to put newly painted stuff on there first before uploading old stuff. If you’re interested I have a few old threads on here with quite a bit of old lead on that I will end up cataloguing on the blog. At some point the number of Old School blogs will hit critical mass, companies won’t be able to ignore the market and the old moulds will start churning out the lead again. Well we can but hope. Perhaps you should consider your won blog, I don’t know too many that look at old Ral Patha and other N.American stuff.

It’s great you get to play DnD with your Niece and Nephew I can’t wait for my 2 year old and 2 month old to be old enough. I have a ten year old Nephew who is obsessed by the Narnia films and spends his time drawing really amazing pictures of knights and dragons. However his Mum doesn’t want him to be a geek so my brother and I are forbidden to talk about such things with him. Boy did I get into trouble for letting him look over my collection. He has enquired with his Mum if he could cycle the 30 odd miles to my house one day…

It’s a real compliment asking for my green recipe, there are much better painters out there so thank you.  I paint Orcs’ flesh with a green base coat of any tone (dark angles green, snot green and goblin green feature heavily). A green ink wash followed by successive layers starting with the base green again then adding progressively more yellow and/or white as the mood takes me. I sometimes go back over the shadows again, perhaps adding a few wrinkles.

Oh and I have some RT era Orks dying to be photographed and put on the blog, including dreads, buggies and bikes though pre-Er we go. Look forward to seeing what you do with your orks.

Erny

Hi Erny, I am going to search for your threads now, I'm sure they'll be full of old lead treasure. It would be cool if companies churned out some of thier old minis, that way we wouldn't have to pay collector's prices on ebay (you listening GW?).

I never thought of starting a blog of my own hmmm, sounds fun, thanks for the idea; I'm going to go and do some research on how to start one.

You should take one of your nephew's drawings (without telling him) and post it on your blog, then show him; I bet he would get a real kick out of that!

Thanks for the ork skin recipe, I'll try it on some of my orks, hope they come out as good as yours.

Oh and I have some RT era Orks dying to be photographed and put on the blog, including dreads, buggies and bikes though pre-Er we go. Look forward to seeing what you do with your orks.

Do it, do it now! Put some of your Rogue Trader orks up on your blog, I need some real inspiration for my upcoming project, I too have some bikes and a buggy and would love to see some eye candy.

Thanks for the support

Hi Super_Gibbon, thanks for the compliment, I think I will start a blog. BTW I just went to your blog, awesome stuff! Your standard bearer Superfig Ox has beautiful muted/faded colours, just gorgeous. The Glock-Roach is sweet too, who makes the mini?

Hi everyone, I have been busy with school but managed to get this one done. He is a Citadel Paladin; I got him cheap off ebay, pretty fast and easy to paint. I also got some really good tips on photography from a lot of people in the forum (thanks everyone), I think the pics look a lot better.

As always C&C always welcome.

As for photography advice I would say do exactly what is written on this site and you can't go wrong.

Here we have a miniature by Ral Partha, I know nothing about him except he had 1977 stamped on the base; now that is old! He was on ebay painted badly and looking lonely so I picked him up for .99cents; nice and cheap. Let me know what you think of his snow base.

He is a slim little fellow, I took a comparison pic with him next to the Citadel Paladin.

Really loving the metal work, the shield is also very crisp, I do love a good shield paint job, especially the variety you can inject into shields, they really do give the miniature a very unique character on the tabletop!

Loving the figs shown here!

Hello everyone, I present to you a Citadel Fighter (don`t know his code or his real name, if anyone does let me know) and a Metal Magic (mega minis) Knight with Halberd. The Citadel Fighter is preslotta and was really fun to paint, he has a great expression, the Metal Magic fighter was quick and easy due to all his armour. I actually don't think he has a name - not that common back then. But I can tell that it's a C01 Fighter, shown in the Second Compendium (84) - http://www.solegends.com/citcomp2/citcomp2019-02.htm (second row, second from the right).

Nameless or not - he is lovely, and you did great.

Thanks guys I really appreciate all the feedback, especially coming from you lot!

@Braxandur, thanks I really like painting fully armoured minis, they are quick and look good when finished. I am not using these guys for anything, I have never wargammed but hope to do some this summer. I just moved to Edmonton this year and there seems to be a group that meets regularly (back home everyone was into 40k, I could never to get into it).

Thanks Pil, I have to diversify and do some Magic Users or monsters.

Hi DeafNala, Lads in Cans is right, thanks for the feedback.

phreedh, I personally like reading through a thread with a lot of pics, I am glad that other people feel that way too.

Scurv, You so right, I have quite a few of these minis (bought from Mega Minis) and the sculpting is fantastic. Their dwarves are particularly good. I highly recommend them (especially for the price) and I think they look good mixed in with other  companies.

Thanks Comsquare.

CO1 Fighter, thanks clam, do you have anymore conversions on the table? Still look at those fantastic Mindflayers once in a while.

I would like to thank everyone again for all the encouragement

Hear, hear! I concur! This is a thread that makes me smile for the pure bliss of looking at wonderfully painted old miniatures that make me feel young again. Takes away the little pains in the bones here and there...  :D

As to the blond fighter in your last pic, I have the same miniature around and I'm certain that it was supposed to be a "female fighter" I think from one of the old Citadel Adventurer's Boxes (I'm not sure on that one, though...). Wonderful miniatures! Wonderful paintjobs. A pleasure looking at them! Keep them coming...

You're welcome. Glad I could be of help. And for conversions. I'm rather immobilized these days, so 'no' - and converting ain't really a speciality of mine. I'm more a collector and  painter - and only rarely dare cutting/chopping my miniatures apart  :) The Mind Flayers were mainly done because no one could help me with the real stuff.

But hopefully I'll be back painting soon. A friendly soul in the US have provide me with an awesome box of Grenadier's Dwellers below - I really would like having painted.

Hello everyone, I am back! I finished my exams and took a week off and just laid in my bed like a lazy bum; now I am back to painting and commenting on all the fine new threads that have popped up in my absence.

Some new paint jobs, here we have two Ral Partha minis, one is a Skeleton General and the other a Skeletal Sabertooth tiger. The sabertooth tiger is pretty big as you can see. What I like about these minis are that even the bases are metal making for some heavy minis. These are for an undead army that I am have been building for more years than I can remember, I hope to finish it this summer; I'll post some pics of it soon.

VERY NICE additions to the Gallery! The bone-work on the Living Impaired Sabertooth is especially well done..the added area seem to have allowed you a greater degree of tones. GREAT STUFF!
I also am looking forward to The Horde from HELL...or wherever.

Thanks Thantsants, I am going to get that b*stard army done this summer if it kills  me (I don`t want to tell you how many years this has been a WIP, I should win an award).

Thanks for the comments Pil (lord of the undead)

Thanks Braxandur, it can be bought at Iron Wind metals :

http://ironwindmetals.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=5581

may be at Ral Partha Europe as well (didn`t check).

Hi DeafNala, thanks for the comments, I hope to take pics of the army soon (just a few more skeletons).

Thanks phreedh, your right about that sword, its pretty big but doesn`t look too out of place when looking at the mini on a table.

Thanks again to everyone that commented

Damien

Well it is good to be back! Grad school kicked my butt last semester and I could not find the time to paint. My New Years resolution will be to paint and post to my favorite forum.

As you can see I will continue my thread of cool old school minis, all the minis that I am posting are WIP.

In this post we have an old preslotta Paladin in platemail (anyone know the official name?), I still have to paint his base, cloak and the hilt of his sword.

And these are some of my absolute favorite miniatures, they are old (early 80s) Grenadier skeletons. I am building an undead/skeletal warband of these early 80s minis.

The warband consists of 9 skeletal warriors, a Necromancer, a bolt thrower and a rare skeletal dragon:

I won the skeletons on ebay and they used to look like this:

If anyone is interested the dragon came from this box:

I still need to finish the dragon, the bolt thrower and the Necromancer.

C&C welcome and thanks for looking (its good to be back!)

Bleedin' 'eck mate, it's been a while! =) Nice additions, will be nice to see a few close ups of that dragon once it's finished.

Very nice!

The older minis look great. I remember sortieing out into dank dungeons way back in the 80's with these figures. Lots of nostalgia!

The newer mini's from Reaper etc are huge compared to the older 25mm ones.

WOW!

Some great old school minis with top paintjobs here.

First time I have caught this thread, you last posted before I joined the forum.
Really glad that you have returned!

Hi everyone! Thanks for the warm welcome, it is good to be back and good to be painting again.

phreedh: even though I have not come to this forum that much I was still checking out your blog. I really like all the warbands you have painted up; the elves, the spartans with the manticore but I am most jealous of your new mancave (I want a man cave!). Everyone should check out phreedh's blog, it really rocks.

madmike: I just checked out your thread, I think we have the same taste in miniatures, I really like you paint jobs.

Mason: Thanks man, your Mordheim ruins thread rocks, I read through the whole thing last night, it made my jaw drop.

m4jumbo: thanks jumbo, its good to be back, can't wait to finish this warband and move on to all the other minis in the queue (I have too many freakn' minis).

Thank you all for looking
 Damien

I got to paint all those Living Impaired Guys for a friend several years ago; they really are fairly awful minis. You did a WONDERFUL  job raising them to a higher level. VERY WELL DONE!

WELCOME BACK! While you were gone I added all sorts of strange thingies to my Ubergoblin Thread...if you really have nothing better to do with your time, check it out.
