Having caught the bug from Akula and Vyper (and inspired by Chris at Wanted for Wargaming and Remi Bostal's work), I've decided to have a go at some Tatooine buildings.
I thought I'd start with something simple, so I took a basic polystyrene box (an iPod carton I think) and added a polystyrene dome. The box was great as it had a raised disc that provided a natural edge for the dome. I cannibalised some old Action Fleet sets for the frontage and detailing. I filled the smaller stairs with milliput as they jarred with the overall scale and added a plasticard and card door.
I toyed with Chris and Herb Gundt's sandstorm technique, which I think looks great, but with the exposed plastic I was worried I'd lose the detail - so plummed for plastering the whole thing.
It's mounted on hardboard and once I'd fillered any exposed polystyrene, and applied a couple of coats of sand to the base, I PVAed the lot to bond it.
It's currently drying, so thought I'd take a couple of photos to show how it's coming along.
The Action Fleet stuff does all the work IMHO. I think I'll have to try and pick up a couple more of these for parts as they are very handy.

More detailing to add from my bits box for chimney etc, but it seems to be shaping up OK.
BTW - The Speeder is a WotC Flash Speeder conversion - again ripped off for Chris's work!
-
Excellent! I love all the little details.
-
Lovely work indeed and catches the look of Tatooine rather well.
-
nice one Karl... looks great with the placcy add ons...
-
Ta - hopefully once painted they'll all blend in.
Any recommendation on colour? Stuck between a warm yellowy sandstone and a cooler Dheneb Stone...
-
Looks great Karl!

-
That looks amazing ;D
-
It really does look excellent. I agree with Somnambulist and Anevilgiraffe, it's the details that make it so cool.
As for painting, I'd vote for the yellow sandstone, for what it's worth.
Not really aware of the Action Fleet stuff, what was it you cannibalised for the bits? My own Mos Eisley-inspired project is somewhat stalled precisely because of a shortage of suitable bits'n'bobs - I look at topics like this one and Vongoosewink's and think, 'ah, my piles of polystyrene could look like that... but they don't'.
-
The two sets I bought - and only recently - were the Action Fleet Mos Espa Pod Racer Hanger and Mos Espa Market that were released around the time of Episode One. I noticed that Chris Fitzpatrick had used these very cleverly in his builds.
The scale of them is a bit all over the place - but broadly 28mm and they both have some great accessories - moisture evaporator, awnings etc and various odds and sods for the bits box.
But the best thing about the Market set are the doorways and alcoves. I essentially took apart the Market set and went at it with clippers to get some free-standing walls, that I can then add as detailing on my other SW builds.
The Pod Racer Hanger doesn't have quite as many handy parts - but it has a great arch that I plan to use for a Hanger build - which will be the next project if this first building comes off OK.
Hoping to pick another of each of these on ebay - as they've proved invaluable so-far - unless anyone has some they want to get rid of?
For inspiration check out these two sites - both are outstanding:

-
Your Mos Eiley building is amazing. As I can see many of us are working on Star Wars projects.
For now I am converting and repainting the miniatures....more to come soon.
-
Uti - thanks for the info; I've been looking at some of the sets. They do look like they have cool bits.
And the French blog has some excellent stuff on it! As does Vongoosewink's of course - I'm already following his.
Looking forward to seeing this develop (and nicking ideas to jump-start my own project)!
-
What a brilliant project-start! The building looks perfect and the Action Fleet parts a good addition.
-
Cheers all!
The building has dried now so I'll be painting it next.
-
Great work! Nice to see you got the landspeeder up and running! ;)
-
Chris - well it had been up on blocks for sooo long ;)
-
Great job, more to add on my to do list
-
So, I've taken on the mantle for this one.
I've been asked to make a few buildings and stuff so that Karl can run a Star Wars speeder game.
First up the speeders. They're just the plain Action Fleet ones. I've taken the clunky missile launchers off of the side of the blue one and covered the holes with GS. Luke Skywalkers one is just had the joins hidden so far. Again by GS. Both will get a repaint. I've also based them on clear rod. This acts as a sort of gimble allowing the speeders to move....
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/Mobile%20Uploads/20150507_075313_zpsfvpbc7su.jpg~original) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150507_075313_zpsfvpbc7su.jpg.html)
I've also based a couple of moisture vaporators (not the greatest models) and based a ruined drop pod that'll be turned into a scrap pile....
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/Mobile%20Uploads/20150507_075342_zps37ntdccj.jpg~original) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150507_075342_zps37ntdccj.jpg.html)
In the bottom of the last pic, I've made a negative of a door so I can cast it with GS to use about the buildings.
So I've made 3 buildings so far. A spaceport, a scrap merchant and a building with an arch. They should end up with the same texture as my wee desert house I built for my 8th Army project (first pic)....

Yep, effing brilliant so far. ;D
-
I really like the rubbish and other detailing - loads of character 8)
-
Shaping up lovely Mr M!
-
Impressive start!
-
Most impressive! Much better than mine...
-
The shuttle looks a bit big for the landing pad?
Other stuff looks great :-* :-* :-*
-
'Kin brilliant start, sir.
:-* :-*
Now I am finding it REALLY difficult enough to stay away from Tatooine as it is and you go and do this.
I hate you even more now!
>:D
-
Very cool.
-
That junk shop really looks the part! :o
Well done with these.
-
Excellent!
-
two questions first what range is the shuttle on the landing pad from? and second could you post a pic of some figs near the action fleet speeders for scale? this is great and ill be following your thread
-
Love your buildings, and the converted speeder and bases for them too.
Must dig out the SW figs, and some of the Styrofoam I've been collecting for a while now, and get to work.
You definitely have a very nice Tatooine vibe going on there.
-
Very cool - one (strange?) question - what did you use as the covering? Tetrion?
Cheers,
-
Very good matey :D
I'm kinda jealous that you've done so many already :'( ;)

James
Cheers Jim!
It does help that I'm not doing interiors, like some mad people! ;) It does help using the Action Fleet stuff as well. That helps speed up the detailing!
Shaping up lovely Mr M!
I'm glad you like it!! Phew!! :D
The shuttle looks a bit big for the landing pad?
Other stuff looks great :-* :-* :-*
Ta Colin!
It doesn't help that they don't do plate warmers any bigger!! I suppose in theory I could of halved it and elongated it, but the donut shaped spaceport is quite popular on Tatooine.

I hope these pics help Wolfie. Figs are (left to right) Crooked Dice, Action Fleet, GW. The cutting pad has a 1cm grid on as well that should

Get it sorted man! I'd love to see what you come up with! ;)
Cheers Mako!
Very cool - one (strange?) question - what did you use as the covering? Tetrion?
Cheers,
I'm not sure what Tetrion is mate. I tried Googling it. Is it filler? I've used Polyfilla finishing skim here. Quite thickly and roughly laid on and sanded when dry.
Thanks for the support guys! :D
-
Tetrion is a branded filler te same as Pollyfilla mate :)
cheers
James
-
They look great Andy.
Must be quite tempting to make all these adobes a bit more generic, so they'll do for either Tatooine OR the Western Desert... :)
-

The Action Fleet stuff does vary in scale a little. I am treating this more like a Skyhopper rather than the bigger Tydirium.
There are still plenty on EBay. I've been collecting bits for this for years and years, so have picked the AF terrain and ships fairly cheaply.
-
Thanks Paul! One does try to be hated!! ;) :D
Thanks for the support guys! :D
Right!
That does it!
I am getting my Tatooine shit out over the weekend and seeing what I have to work with.
The pièce de résistance is the clincher, though!
:D
-
the tydrium is also action fleet then cool ive been trying to get good pics of toys and models that at least roughly scale in at 28mm I haven't got any action fleet yet cause I wasn't sure if they would be big enough the speeders look perfect
-
This is good stuff!

Ohh! I never thought of that! I could have a desert mud building city for my 8th Army zombies! ;)

Anything you build would go lovely with your western table bits.

I would say the shuttle is too small. Speeders will be fine though.
-
Ohh! I never thought of that! I could have a desert mud building city for my 8th Army zombies! ;)
lol lol
That thought will probably give him a funny turn.
:D
-
Thanks Andy & Jim, I thought it was something like that - I keep wanting to do some Afghan-style buildings and I think that is the finish I'm looking for ;)
-
Absolutely awesome work there! :-* :-* :-*

I am imagining a very odd scenario here.
"Mesa wasn't knowin' nuffing about blagging at cantina"
"Shut it! You're nicked chummy! Another for the wagon, praetor bill."

The Sweeney: Tatooine Branch!
There's an idea!
:D

The Force is with the Force.
-
I was just thinking that even in the 'grim dark future' with all the alien races that want to destroy earth, with all the death and killing and pure EVIL that comes from warp, Jar Jar Binks is still the worst thing to EVER happen to the human race! Brother Wannabeajedi is just dispensing the Emperors justice!

That's the scrap shop finished.

Cheers chaps!
I've got a good bit more done, but I'll show all the buildings at once when I finish the Starport.
These are the 2 moisture vaporators. They're made of a REALLY crap soft plastic!! :'( :'( :'( I was trying to clean them up with a knife but it just made the mould lines even worse!! >:( So I've just decided to paint them and hopefully no one will notice!! ::)

Great! I love it!! :-*Actually it's tatooine... damn...I can not think of other things since I saw this project... o_o
-
I've been following all the other Star Wars threads in Future Wars and I must say this beats them all hands down.
-
I've got an extra wee building done for this.
It's supposed to be an Imperial tower. Its built out of foamboard covered in thin card. Wee bits of plastic were used for the 'gubbins'.

The paint really brings the build to life. tres good!
-
Thanks chaps! Much appreciated! :)
Totesamazeballs :-* - did you use an airbrush or is that brush painted?
No airbrush involved. Just an old cheap kiddies paint brush and drybrushed the life out of it! The chips were done in GW Abaddon Black with GW Runefang Silver on top.
-
Oh my, that's simply amazing! :o
-
awesome work, mate. OUTSTANDING!!! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Top drawer work mate. It always amazes me at how neat your cutting is on card and plasticard, especially with such small pieces.
-
Superb!
The weathering and little detailing that helps break up the 'flatness' really bring it to life for me.
:-* :-*
-
Very well done.

Brilliant. ;D

Great work on the speeders.Love the painting.
I still have quite a few of the Actionfleet vehicles in boxes.Nice range of toys.
-
Those are superb, especially the weathering.
-
The cockpit lights are wonderful as are the pitted sandblow exteriors.
-
Lovely work :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
You do know there is one of these sitting in my garage that needs a paint job?
-
Great work Andy - exquisite details 8)
-
You beauty!
-
andym: fabulous stuff! (just caught your stuff in the "recent" postings...)
great thread, design/architecture, construction & painting/finishing
everything looks like a really cohesive world
the little (mechanical/industrial) details are obviously great, but also the high contrast between the technological details and the bleak desert colors and textures
cheers!
😊
-
I love what you did with those Action Fleet speeders. Such clean painting. I think you've done just the right amount of dirt and clean to sell the look. Feeling a little jealous right now.
-
Lovely painting! Especially well done on the lighted dashes!
-
The cockpit lights are wonderful as are the pitted sandblow exteriors.
Thanks kidterminal! The cockpit lights on the blue speeder are to hide the bad, bad moulding on the dash. The painted bright lights mean you don't see it.
Lovely work :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
You do know there is one of these sitting in my garage that needs a paint job?
Ta Colin! Which one do we have? Is it Luke's speeder?

Brilliant. ;D

Those are superb, especially the weathering.
Cheers Mark! Weathering makes or breaks it for me usually. I like that 'used' Star Wars feel.

These repaints are spot on!

Strange mix of pilots, should I be scared the next time we play 7th voyage, speeder mounted greeks
Lovely work you really need to get some SW figures to play with?
-
Damn. I just got the seams covered and the screw holes filled on my escape pod, and here you are with it painted and ready to go. Now you're just showing off.
-
:-* :-* :-* :-*
Brilliant Andy!
-
S'allraht, I 'spose.....

Ooh smashing little additions there mate, the sandport arms race is certainly in full swing at the moment isn't it.

Incredible work!!!!...Love all the little details!!
-
Nah, just the usual great paintwork from Andym :D
-
Strange mix of pilots
Good point, I think you need some drivers/pilots for them - maybe a droid chauffeur in the style of your recent scratch builds?
-
Not a big update this time. Just a wee repaint. I think this is a Disney toy representing the ride at their park. All I've done is remove the R2 unit on the roof(it was too big!) and paint it.

That is a bloody great paint job, the first pic had me fooled in thinking the window was in the same box shape as the hull, then realized it was painted that way....lovely! lol

Lovely
I like the lighter colour in the top fans
One question though- no engines at the back?

I think this is a Disney toy representing the ride at their park.
It is, I remember doing that ride in Orlando in´99.
This is why the passengers compartments are terraced - to see the (wind)screen from the back row (enter from the left, exit to the right everybody!)
It´s great to see it as a real vessel for the gaming table and your rendition is fabulous!

Looks fantastic! I think they are the rectangular bits at the rear.

Cracking work as usual. Love the windscreen in particular :-* :-*

Do you think I should have built it out a bit then?

Your welcome. If I'd covered up the rectangular bits you wouldn't be able to press the buttons to make it say "light speed" or go "whooooosh" and flash the wee red lights! ;)
Thanks chaps! :D

And I wouldn't have realised it was painted if it weren't for Gunbird's comment - brilliant 8) 8) 8)

I demand a video clip now! With the sound and red lights :D
Great PJ on that shuttle, of course. :)
-
I've had the very same toy in my hands, didn't even think about using it for gaming (what was I thinking) it really is perfect to use, your paint job made it even better!
-
That's just lovely. I really like the two tone look, and that window is remarkable. It would have been nice if the R2 head was the right size though. I have one of those painted up in my Star Wars thread, but it doesn't hold a candle to this one. Did you take it apart so you could paint the interior?
For those who are interested, this is the Starspeeder shuttle from the Star Tours attraction at Disneyland. The robot inside, Captain Rex, was voiced by Paul Reubens. He reprised his roll of Captain Rex in a first season episode of Star Wars Rebels, where he was the pilot of an interplanetary shuttle that looks a hell of a lot like this one.
-
nice painting job on that shuttle indeed!!!!!!!!!! keep posting please!!!!!

So here's some dodgy phone pics of our Escape from Mos Eisley game board that we'll have at Salute.

Gorgeous!
Wish I bought up more Snapdragon when I had the chance :(
-
Wonderful work... really inspiring. Luckily I was able to pick up a lot of the Snapdragon buildings/huts when Brookhurst Hobbies was closing out their stock. Really interesting stuff.
-
Photobucket links fixed.
-
They look great :)
-
Great! One question which pops up as I look at your projects is. "Jesus, *that* required a lot of greenstuff. Is he buying it on the black market by the container?"
-
Ebay is your friend here mate! I usually buy it in 36" lengths. Here's one on £7 for example......

Never buy it from the likes of GW! They charge an arm and a leg for the stuff! :o

Nice to see this back :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

As I was looking at all of your fine work this morning, I was wondering how I had missed this thread! Very fun and inspiring work and I want to see much more.

Superb stuff Andy.
I hadn't seen it before so I appreciate you taking the time to fix all the links to the pictures, top man.

So I've been struggling with time to do anything recently, but this has been top of the list for a wee bit. It really wants to make me get on with my own SW project.🤔

It's mainly a toy I was supplied. There was covers where the wings are currently attached that show the engine workings. They've been removed, cut up and added to the wings to allow them to move(or been unclipped for transport). Hopefully it now looks similar to the imperial shuttle from ROTJ. Maybe a slightly different class or prototype.
I'm sure I've seen Jimbibbly convert this toy before, but I can't find images!
-
Looks great :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Where is the second one? I NEED ONE!!!

Andy that ship is looking good but I have one question. Why does your desk look like mine down to the Baked Bean tins?

I did mate but Photof**kit f**ked it ::)
I’m sorting through my photos whilst away and will be updating my Star Wars thread with the older photos in the next few weeks :)

They're actually fairly cheap to find on eBay Colin. It's a star wars rebels attack shuttle.

It's the reason I haven't been doing much in a looooonnng while mate, I'm renovating me house and my hobby room became a makeshift kitchen in the mean time! :'(

Get it sorted mate! Some of us need ideas to steal inspire us! Stop watching rugby and do something more important! ;)

How strong are the wings going to be?
I imagine they would be quite fragile where they join the original model
-
Surprisingly strong Colin. The wings and fin are made from foamed PVC which is very light compared to plastic card. With the original part of the toy attached where the wing meets the hull, by superglue, Its sturdy AND lets the wing fold. The foamed PVC can also be inscribed with panel lines, which makes it a doddle to detail.
