Title: Hun in slouch hats? Who does them?
Post by: Svennn on January 09, 2011, 06:16:26 PM
Title says it all. I know I have seen some but cannot think where for the life of me.

The only ones I can picture in my mind are the Hammers/Plynkes camel corps., were they HLBS?

If anyone can point a senile old chap in the right direction I would be much obliged

Hammers' camel guys were HLBSC (not sure if still available). Mine were Tiger Miniatures.

Brigade do German infantry wearing slouch hats too in their East Africa range. They are rather nice.

THey were indeed HLBSCJKSDJSID, but OOP. Am I wrong  remembering German troops in SE Asia wearing such hats to?

Yeah. They were worn just about everywhere even slightly sunny that the Germans went to, from China to Macedonia. Most famously in DSWA (they seem to have really liked them down there, and didn't wear much else on their heads), in fact the German name for the hat was Südwester.  But even in places where they were less popular such as German East (where sun helmets were where it was at for the fashion-conscious) they could still be found.

Südwester

Really? I thought that was the  type of oilskin/rubberized cotton hat which fishermen use.

It's that too. In English we call it a sou'wester.

But in a German colonial context, a Südwester is the slouch hat associated with Deutsch-Südwestafrika.

I have the Brigade ones and quite like them. http://www.brigadegames.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=BGAHSL&Category_Code=BGHMGWIA Unfortunately no pics of the troopers themselves, but the Command pack gives an idea of how good they are.

Beautiful sculpts. I have a squad of mounted HLBSC Shutztruppe, but they are not quite as detailed as the Brigade (not to mention hard to find) I have some Tiger artillery crew pieces as well, and I quite like them.  http://www.tigerminiatures.co.uk/page5.htm

I agree, nice figures and a smart uniform too.
