Title: Mechanical Squid
Post by: Andym on 10 January 2011, 06:06:38 PM
Soo.... I've got a couple of subs in the collection so far.

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=6c0452985336d5460cb09f6d79a78cef&topic=24214.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=6c0452985336d5460cb09f6d79a78cef&topic=24214.0)

In the first thread it somehow got round to trying to build a mechanical squid to fight the other sub. This is the sketch I'm working from. Looking at it I think it would work out too big so I've scaled the real thing back a wee bit.

That's all I've got done so far. The main body is made out of glossy magazine cover again, like the other builds, wrapped over a simple box shape made out of mounting card. The propeller at the back is very thin plastic card cut in a circle and folded round on it's self with a disc of thicker plastic card to hold the shape. The blade on it is a thin plastic card circle cut concentrically into the middle to make a coil that's glued to the cone.

youre a visionary! you have an idea, conceptualize it on paper ant then build it. thats impressive. most of us get stuck on any one of those steps.

F-ing brilliant! Keep us posted.

I'm really interested to see how you tackle the tentacles. I would suggest the lower range strings from an old piano if you can find them.

Jamesmanto-cheers dude! I've used steal wire as a kind of former and drilled out a square piece of plastic card with 6 holes and pushed the wire through. I then made cones out of glossy paper and glued them on. It doesn't look too different yet to the last pictures so I've not posted them yet.

Doomsdave-what is that from?

Colin- no rules yet. I'll see what westfellachris comes up with first for 'the battle of the aquanauts'

Cheers guys!!

Doomsdave-what is that from?

An 80's Cartoon Series called Silverhawks, which was really Thundercats in space, but then again Thundercats was just He-man with Furries. I loved it when I was younger and always wanted a minis version of Mon-Starr's space squid.

Sorry for the lack of updates.

The whole fish for subs has developed into 'Battle of the Aquanauts' thread at the top of the VSF Page.

I thought for completeness I'd show my efforts with the squid sub here and in the other thread.

The tentacles are cones made out of glossy magazine cover over a steal wire former. I'm thinking of a buzz saw, some suction pads and spikes ,weapons-wise, for the other tentacles.

This color!

Just kidding.  Seriously though I think a verdigris'ed copper would off-set some of the other models on your board as they are all darker colors.  Great build by the way.

Arrgghhh, we're all domed  :D

Looks great and I third the red colour but make it a bit more ochery and not so bright...

Or, how about red on most of the top and a black/dark grey underbelly  :)

Cheers again for all the comments.

I went with the concencus and painted it red. For the more VSF feel I painted it the same sort of red that old steamtrains were, so it's also not too far removed from the Silverhawks ship....

That looks really quite excellent!  :D

I also think the dark red colour you went with helps to make it look as if it's underwater (since colours do often look different and dark/more subdued when underwater).

Anyway, top stuff; I always enjoy looking though your threads, so thank you for sharing!  8)

Red ones go faster... a fallacy often mentioned by people who drive fast...  ???
Do like this mechanical monster of the deep. Would have liked to have seen it painted varying shades of metallic green and blue but it certainly looks good.

I've got a turtle sub that's nearly finished( I'll post it when it's totally done) in various shades of green if that makes you feel better?

Andy, that looks cracking! And by the way; in water, red is the last colour to go in the colour spectrum as one goes deeper. A damn fine colour for the sub. :D

Not sure that's right as I was in a Sealife centre the other day and there was a group of fish in there that were very good hunters as they were red and the other fish couldn't see them.

Jim,you are correct. And remember a fish tank is not an natural enviroment, ever noticed fish moving? It is amazing watching the counter-shading work,as they twist and turn, flashes of silver and bronze. I'll shut up..... lol

Exactly, fish also sense things along their lateral line (following the spine). I would have to know if the red fish were pelagic (like a tuna),where they came from ,environment et cetera.

I believe it was a type of soldier fish. Big eyes, and not very pretty :)
I assume it's a deep dweller due to the eyes etc but if red is the last to go, how would that act as camoflague, surely the colour would be irrelevant?
Title: Re: Mechanical Squid
Post by: OSHIROmodels on 06 October 2011, 12:09:10 PM
It might depend on the tone rather than the actual colour. I always wondered why tigers are yellow and black when colour doesn't matter  ???

The Soldier fish is  nocturnal hence the big eyes , it hides in crevices and caves during the day. And yes the colour does seem to be irrelevant, nature huh? I guess at night it doesn't matter.

Then the sealife centre needs to change the text next to the fish that says they're camoflagued due to being red. Not the first place to get things wrong on those though.

They are probably right, I guess the fish  hide amongst red coloured rocks, coral and so on during the day? The Soldier fish is not a deep dweller; they go to about 35 metres.

So we could imagine Andy's squid parked in a volcanic (red coloured) crevice awaiting it's prey? Then again the colour could just be saying "I'm red, and  I'm not to be messed with!"?

Title: Re: Mechanical Squid
Post by: Dewbakuk on 08 October 2011, 08:38:28 AM
Okay, decided to actually look into this myself :)

Apparantly red is the first colour to go and has reduced dramatically by 10'. Which means that when the soldier fish go into the deeper areas of a coral reef to hunt they appear black/grey. So at night, amongst the coral, they probably do count as camouflaged.

Andym, looks like green filters out around 45' :)

Very nice paint job, the lighter streaks make me think of light flickering over it's surface
