I saw this book in the library just before Christmas so took it out as a holiday read. I can't recommend it as reading matter; I thought it was poorly written but for anyone interested in Victorian adventures, it has some ideas that may be useful in games.
I apologise in advance if this is already a well known book to aficionados of this genre. It's based on the background that evil is actively trying to take over the world. Various devils, demons and sundry nasties are abroad in the world, many in human form, directed by the [minor spoiler approaching] the top demon who is none other than Leopold King of Belgium. This fact is revealed fairly early in the book.
The British Royal Family is protected by a small, elite group led by Maggie Brown (John's mother) called the Protektorate. After being involved in some bloody confrontations with the demons and their minions, the Queen decides to join the Protektors and become a demon hunter herself.
There's zombies, succubi, werewolves, killer rats and conspiracies. As I say, I didn't find it a good read but there are ideas there that you may be able to use.

I was looking at "Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Slayer" in Waterstones recently. I assume its along similar lines as this one.

And I'm fairly certain, for the colonial crowd, that I saw both in piles near Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies in Barnes and Nobel.

I read it earlier in the year and like you, Doug, thought it wasn't great literature but had some interesting ideas. Not so jazzed about the macro-plot of the vampire families plotting the apocalypse, but quite liked the zombie-sub-plot and liked the idea of the small group of paranormal bodyguards. Thought they might translate into game terms quite easily.

I read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and really disliked it. Almost all of it was the original book, with small new sections added. I judge that about 20% of the words were new. As much as I disliked this book, however, I wonder if the prequel is any better?

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and Sense and Sensibility and Seamonsters, were written by one author; Queen Victoria: Demon Hunter was written by another; and Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter by a third.
I've only read Queen Victoria: Demon Hunter - but I know my girlfriend had problems with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, though her major problem was that racoons had invaded Buckinghamshire (incidently my major problem with Disney Winnie the Pooh is Gophers in Sussex, another incidence where lack of research into local wildlife shatters dsuspension of disbelief).

Exactly my feelings. I particularly disliked the dialogue. There were a lot of modern constructions and idioms that ruined the atmosphere and there was far too much gore so that any shock value was totally absent.
But definitely good for game ideas.

I'd seen Affinity Bridge mentioned elsewhere, but never heard it was 'Holmes meets...'

It doesn't actually feature Holmes, but the main character is a laudunum swilling mystery solver... the limited edition was cool too, it came in a nice slipcase with an airship medallion in a little velvet bag...

This 'Franken-genre' frightens me. For a real (and well written) romp why not try 'The List Of Seven' by, Mark Frost. Great stuff...plus no material from someone elses novel!
