Title: Board game: Cargo Noir
Post by: Hammers on 12 January 2011, 08:55:31 AM
This game caught my attention when I read about it on TGN. Looks like it has a lot of potential (although the artwork doesn't seem to match the theme very well). I know this isn't strictly wargaming but as have toyed with the idea of how to run a campaign for a ship and its crew running into various ports, this could give the framework in which to run it.

I quite like the comic-style art. Looks interesting. We're quite big on board games in my gaming gang, so I may have to look into this one.

I don't mind comic art per se, quite the contrary, I just don't think it captures the film noire genre of the 1950s, which seems to be the inspiration of the game.

I agree is something wrong on the art.
I like the comic book style, and I think the artist is good, but there is clearly a lack of documentation, I would say the problem is more on the art direction than the art per se,  UZI on 1954? skyscrappers on macao at 50's? and many characters dress in 2010 fashion.
A real shame because IMHO pay a bit of attention on the historical setting of the art (even if the product don't pretend 100% historical accuracy) makes a very long way on the final product charm.

Saw this over on TGN feed earlier  - a future purchase I think!

As to the art work, I agree it does look out of place for 50's theme but wouldn't put me off if the game play's well.

Maybe they should have tried somthing along more in period - perhaps along the line of Edward Hopper style?
