Readers will note that YankeePedlar has an article in there this month, on his last set of rules. Sudan will figure heavily in my buying for 2011, my painting for 2014 and my playing for 2016. Anyone else similarly afflicted?
-
Not really. I did buy a whole load of Essex Sudan War figures when they first came out (ooh, 25+ years ago?). But although I used the Brits for NW Frontier, I still have the Mahdists sitting primed and a few-part painted at the very bottom of the lead mountain...
Anyone interested in taking them off my hands?
I think it's probably time I let them go ;)
-
Been there and done it in 15mm (Essex) many moons ago, although tempted, I don't have to revisit as I get to play with Dave's toy's :)

After I bought his rules I rehabilitated a load of Old Glory 15mms I had sitting in boxes for years. Added quite a bit to the collection as well. My focus in this period now is to build a nice paddle steamer. The kits on the market just don't look that good to me.

Yes indeed, as it has for the past couple of years. Although, I'm starting to regret my younger self's ignorance of the conflict; I painted my British in redcoats! Arrgh! lol

No problem red coats were worn at the battle of Ginnis in 1885 ;)

Its no problem, remember folks its a game played with your toys, so you get to choose. ;)

Really looking forward to this article (and the one on Ancient Germans) expected in the upcoming Wargames Illustrated! Got plans to start my Sudan War armies later this year using Perry Miniatures, I hope their Mahdist plastics are due for release soon.
-
I have seen a copy and I can honestly say, as both a gamer and student of colonial history, this may become the 'one-stop' resource for anyone who is thinking of or playing Sudan-based games - best new issue yet IMO.
-
Just a thought whilst I am here - does anyone have any Mahdist cavalry or foot they do not want? On the market for painted figures.
-
I'm seriously considering The Sudan in 15mm primarily as I want bigger actions.
-
redzed has it right when he says that 15s provide the opportunity for large actions and the Sudan is the perfect place for those action to take place. My Sudan collection is composed of Essex, Old Glory, Two Dragons and Minifig 15s and can be seen on the field of battle at www.warin15mm.com/The-Sudan.html
-
Got hooked years ago, bought last year, am about to paint, will finish ... soon, will play anytime.
-
15mm Sudan has been my genre du jour for well nigh a year. Building a Sudan specific gaming table this weekend , matter of fact.
-
I hope their Mahdist plastics are due for release soon.
Gosh, I had forgotten about these. They just advertised their Zouaves in WI, so, hopefully, by Easter?
-
Might be interested in those Madists. I am in the mood to build on my collection. Already have a bunch of the Essex Fuzzies in there.
-
Chaps - very sorry for the slight thread hijack there - it was just an aside really, but I've received several expressions of interest in my Essex Mahdist figures.
Once I have unearthed said figures from the very very bottom of the lead mountain in the loft (no mean undertaking) I will verify exactly what is there and go back to the first person who PM'd me - you know who you are - with a list of the figures and a price.
As I recall, there was one of each variant of the foot figures (arab and hadendowah) so maybe 60+ figures in all, plus 10 mounted on camels. They still make and sell the same figures I believe. I recall I cleaned up and primed all of them, and partially painted some of them.
There is also a bag of 10 Redoubt Fuzzies, unmade up, which will be part of the lot.
Anyway, thanks for those that PM'd me. If bidder #1 decides not to go ahead once he knows what's there and how much I'm asking, then I'll get back to the other interested parties.
Cheers. Richard.
And now - back to the thread! :)
-
I am feeling susceptible to the Sudan, having been recently introduced by a couple of friends. While I can see the practicality of 15mm, I am a 28mm kind of chap and will probably go down that route. We have been enjoying Death in the Dark Continent as a rules set over the last year, and I may add Black Powder to that once I get some hordes of plastic Mahdists painted.
It's a very tempting period at the moment.
-
If Perry miniatures get those plastic mahdists out, I will succumb. I can't justify the cost in metal for about a million Mahdists!
-
Well, looking at the Perry site, Zouaves are imminent, then I assume the Prussian Infantry and British Hussars are next, so the Mahdists may be a distant product............ :-[
-
I am also waiting eagerly for the next WI issue! I hope to find some nice scenarios, which I can use with my sudan gaming board (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=24169.msg309934#new )
-
It is one of their best...... :D
-
Is the Sudan article in the current release? (I've been to a few newsagents but they've all sold out- typical)
or is the current issue available on the last Thursday of this month?
-
Current one is all about D-Day. Sudan one comes out on the 22nd, according to the blurb in the back of the current one.
-
thanks :)
-
Had my copy through the mail today and have to agree that it is excellent. Theres a lot in it that interests me, but the Sudan War articles are fantastic in particular, and an added bonus is that the March issue is set to have a piece on the Camel Corps.
-
I've had mine for a week. A good issue, though still a bit too 'sponsored' for my liking...
-
Yes. The whole thing is a giant extended ad for Perry Industries. Now don't get me wrong, I'm one of their biggest fans, but when an issue is so dominated by endless pics of the same figures, from the same maker, it gets a tad boring after the third or fourth article ::)
Especially when - and WI do this a lot now - in the few pics NOT featuring the Perrys' excellent figures, the manufacturers go uncredited. Or (repeatedly in a recent issue) they get it wrong.
I actually thought that (for once) the FoW content was acceptably proportionate (in other words it didn't completely dominate the whole magazine)
A lot of the potted history content I'd read before. I don't think wargames mags should do potted history. I think they should do wargaming. But that's another discussion ;)
-
I've just read it and think it's one of the better issues, the basing article was epic. The Sudan articles are good congrats to Mr Yankeepedlar :)

In all fairness to the Perrys, however, their Sudan line just puts all others to shame. I could not see myself recommending a non-Perry line for the Sudan, with the possible exception of Old Glory if you really wanted to do 15mm. But then I would try and talk you into 25mm so you could buy the Perry line.

No, me neither. I love the Perry range.
Just felt like the whole mag was one big commercial - but maybe it was. I guess that's one of the downside of themed issues. If you have four or five articles all on the same theme and an obliging manufacturer willing to supply you with dozens of generic pictures of their figures, the publisher unsurprisingly takes the line of least resistance... Just feels a bit, I dunno - lazy? Repetitive?
Anyway, my WI subscription runs out in a couple of months, and I'm not taking out another one, so I won't have to put up with it soon ;)

I know what you mean. I just bought the magazine, first time in ages. As you noted earlier, virtually every time a Perry miniature appears, it's mentioned in the caption, whereas other ranges will get a single mention at the end of an article, or none at all. And unlike Miniature Wargames, there seems to be a very limited number of contributors. Also, the American spelling irritates me.
It used to be cool, but now it’s changed, man.
-
If you've enjoyed the Sudan edition of WI then you really should think about getting Mike Snook's Go Strong into the Desert. It is an excellent read and well illustrated.
-
I found this issue to be an excellent resource for somebody (ME!) who has little knowledge of the was beyond the movie with Carlton Heston!
While I agree with the comments that it did seem to be a big advert for the Perry's the quality and scope of their range (along with their up-and-coming plastics) does make them into the one-stop shop for the war!
Now then I have to do is ask myself - "is to late to switch from the Zulu war which I started collection bits for late last year as my first foray into the whole colonial period?"
-
Do both! You know you want to............... ;D
-
Do both! You know you want to............... ;D
Nnnnnnooooooo!
Don't think my sanity or slow painting speed would cope with both!
-
I have a set of Dave's rules, some more Perrys will be biught later, much later, in the year to add to my Lead Mountain.
-

Well Done that man!
But a 'Lead Mountain'? Shame on you, what are you waiting for, get those paints and brushes out NOW! :D
-
My Lead Mountain is so high that my insurance company is concerned about subsidence........ :o
The next couple of weeks are spoken for: marking American West papers. o_o
Then I have my wargames room to reorganise 8)
and then the paints come back out. :D

I can see where you're coming from here, but I think that the WI editorial team have made more effort than you're giving them credit for. As well as Michael Perry's photos, the Abu Klea article is illustrated by pics taken at the Grimsby Wargames Society, with minis credited as Connoisseur/Bicorne, Perry, Black Tree and Wargames Factory. A double page spread is dedicated to Daniel Hodgson's rather excellent collection of 6mm Baccus models. Finally, a number of pictures have come from Touching History, though these are easy to confuse with Michael Perry's as they also show Perry Minis in action - presumably Paul Darnell liked the models and decided to use them! Overall, I felt the themed content had a good mixture of inspiring models. They could have used only Michael Perry's photos, and I think they should be given credit for the fact that they sourced way more than that.
As for captions, I agree there have been a few miscaptioned pictures in recent issues. I imagine that the Perry pics are well-captioned because Michael Perry has supplied both photos and captions, rather than any innate plot to favour their regular advertisers.
Just offering a different point of view. I think WI deserves credit for the varied content and photos it continues to provide, despite being owned by a single company. That it contains a fair amount of material from industry stalwarts such as the Perrys, Osprey, GB, Warlord etc is somewhat inevitable given its status as the leading historical wargames magazine.

Is this an advertising bot? Sure looks like it.
(subtle name, by the way)
-
Effing cheek. Bot indeed. Huh. :)
I just joined the forum, having heard about it on TPM (where I am also AfricanAl).
As for the name, I am an African history journalist and writer in the real world.
As for the book, it is excellent and sumptuously illustrated. I'm looking forward to Snook's more academic Beyond the Reach of Empire coming out in March.
[Edited for typo and smiley.]

Oh dear. I do apologise. :-X
We're actually really nice here. Welcome to the LAF, and all that...
Edit: what an embarrassing topic for my thousandth post...
::)

No apology required. I thought I'd got a smiley in at the end of the first line... seems to have disappeared.
I guess I'm more Old Ham than Spam. :)
-
Is this an advertising bot?
I think the Perrys make enough money without hiring people to randomly spam their products. It has given me a career idea though..................... :P
-
The idea that a niche firm like the Perry twins would employ spambots to sell their books really is striving for tinfoil hat levels of crazy paranoia. lol
I don't know if a spambot ever managed to even sell a pair of Ugg boots, let alone books about a 19th Century colonial campaign. I think the Perrys should try flogging non-prescription Viagra instead, they've got a better chance of finding a customer with that. :)
-
Ahh our beloved leader, your out of clink then? :D
I bought WI at the weekend and I have enjoyed reading it so far. I wont subscribe again due to the themed issues, but pick and choose depending on content.
Now then I have to do is ask myself - "is to late to switch from the Zulu war which I started collection bits for late last year as my first foray into the whole colonial period?"
Ive just posted on my blog my plans for a Zulu War campaign and am determined to stick to them as much as possible...except Ive asked for Snooks book for my bday this month (currently reading his Zulu war books)...and Ive always wanted to paint some Perry Sudan miniatures but must stay focused

Out of clink? ???

Sorry, was alluding to your TMP sojourn.
-
Ah, got you. I just went and had a look: Still three days to go. But much as he may think he is, Mr. Armintrout is not Most Supreme High Lord of All the Internet, and thus cannot stop me from saying that Flames of War makes you gay here on the LAF. lol
-
Oh Plynkes... Have you been causing trouble again? ;) lol
-
Oh Plynkes... Have you been causing trouble again? ;) lol
Only if you include calling 15mm WW2 gamers gay....
Actually you have appeared to served your time for that offence, but your still inside for calling the poll originator an imbecile.
If I ever need to cheer myself up I go to the Dawghouse on TMP and see what 'crimes' have been commited , downside is I spend a lot of time looking at the nappy board
-
I do 15mm FOW................ :D
-
I do 15mm FOW................ :D
I thought about, decided to go a manly 20mm instead :D
-
I do 15mm FOW................ :D
I also game FOW. Western Desert naturally.
Though I confess I've been lured into 28 mm recently ... got hold of some LRDG trucks and a Sahariana at the larger scale which I still have to put together.
-
It was merely an absurd joke, my usual style of daft clowning around; though of course some uptight bedwetter was offended by it and snitched on me, it being the place that it is.
I have nothing against 15mm or homosexuality (I have tried at least one of those, but I'm not telling you which), and the only thing I have against FoW is the fact that they are always bloody clogging up Wargames Illustrated with it (to get this juggernaut somewhere near back on topic).
-
... against FoW is the fact that they are always bloody clogging up Wargames Illustrated with it ...
Reminds me of the way White Dwarf became an in-house magazine back when I was much younger. As an FOW player I wouldn't mind so much if the stuff was on more than one topic at a time.
-

I too see the day when all other content in WI is stopped in favour of FoW! :-[
Still, I'd save a few quid every month then and re-direct it into some extra lead! :)

I pick & choose based on theme of an issue - it is the one thing I like about the changes since the FoW crowd took over. ;)
Mors - I shall have a look at your blog later this evening!
-
I'm certainly not what you might call a Flames of War player/fan. Don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with FoW if you're into that sort of game- I'm just not one of them :).
However, I can appreciate the higher standard (in particular the level of eye candy) that the new WI format has allowed. hope that makes sense- I'm full of flu (again!!! >:().
Darrell.
-
Well, I'm an avid FOW player and even I get fed up with the FOW content in WI sometimes, it wasn't so bad in this issue though.
I've been interested in Sudan for several years now, mainly because of the Perry range (it's also their fault that I'm interested in WotR, HYW, Napoleonics, ACW and so on...). So I thought it was a great issue and will certainly order some miniatures and start playing any day now!
-
Just read it and I thought it was ok. I've found it quite informative as a total Sudan novice. Tbh I remember back in the day when it was fully loaded with foundry adds and articles so in my eyes it probably hasn't changed all that much other than the production quality, that just my opinion anyway.
-
Hey Tomek...are we brothers ;) lol
-
I think we are, and if we're not, we are two handsome fellas' anyway! :D ;)

I'm hooked, but the WI articles are just a part of a long line of Sudan happenings so I was in the position of looking forward to read the magazine because I was already thinking about the period. I bought "Go Strong in the Desert" which is really riveting good read. I challenge any true wargamer to read it and not want a Sudan Task Force!
