Title: Victorian Weaponry
Post by: oldskoolrebel on 22 January 2011, 09:15:24 PM
Good Evening all,

I wasn't sure where to post this. I'm looking for Victorian or pre-Victorian weaponry for 28mm miniatures. Any suggestions?

Cheers
Andy

Andy, have a gander at Redoubt. They sell Martini Henry rifles and carbines. You'll find them under weapons packs in the left hand column.

Why do I get the feeling if I came to this forum seeking directions to a Victorian left-handed lug wrench(spanner) for 15mm Brazilian steam engineer , I'd get two suppliers, along with a rather involved discussion pointing out that a) 'tool ergonomics of the Victorian era hadn't advanced to the point of there being handedness' and b) 'all Brazilian engineers of the period were ambidextrous'.   And, finally, c) 'Victorian lug nuts?!?!?' lol

You guys crack me up! Just amazing.

Doug

Obscure Miniatures probably has them in their line up for the Paraguay War. :)

You might want to have a look in Black Cat Bases' accessories range as well:

(they do spanners, too. 28mm, though  ::))

I'm assuming that as we're talking about spanners, you refer to mechanical engineers not civil engineers. This is a shame as Unlikely Miniatures produce a very comprehsive 15mm range of civil engineers and equipment in their South American Earthworks and Architecture range.

A quick glance at their website www.unlilkelyminiatures.co.uk/saea.html (http://www.unlilkelyminiatures.co.uk/saea.html) shows one figure with conversion potential; 'SAEA-12 Engineer in campaign boilersuit with hand tool'.  I think by reworking the hand tool into a spanner and removing the breast pockets of the boilersuit, the figure would work as a Brazilian Engineer (from a distance).

As Brazil was a portugese colony until it's proclamation of independance in 1822, it is most likely that the engineers of the period would be Europeans (or their first generation descendants) so you could also consider converting figures from other ranges. Another source worth consifering is Obscure Casting's 15mm range 'Industrialists in the Age of Victoria' which has a few candidates for conversion.

For those inteested in a history of Brazilian enginering during the period, the following link is very useful;

So...

A young blonde was sitting in a bar watching television with the other patrons when a news flash reported that two Brazilian Engineers had died in a bridge collapse in a neabrby city. The woman looked horrified and asked the man next to her: "My goodness, that's terrible. How many is a Brazillian?"
