Title: African Civilians
Post by: James Morris on 25 January 2011, 06:58:43 AM
In preparation for my Salute 2011 game, I'm building an Ethiopian village for the 1930s and am looking to populate it with some suitable Abyssinian civilians in 28mm - I expect to have to do some minor conversion work, but am basically looking for unarmed black African men/ women/ children 28mm models with anything from loincloths to a robe, but no headgear.  The Masai civilians in the Foundry catalogue look like my best bet so far, if not the cheapest.

Any ideas chaps?  All help appreciated.

You are right some Foundry civilians are suited for your purpose.

On the other hand "strategia e tattica" of Italy has in his colonial range a set of a Ras with reinue.
It includes a coptic priest an umbrella bearer and maybe another couple of types that also might be useful.
They are 25mm and might be a little short.
Unfortunately for some reason, today,  I cannot open the link and so I cannot show it.

Anyhow, NorthStar stocks some of his ranges, but alas not the colonials.

On second thoughts some of the Perry's Sudan civilian types might be pressed in service. Also some of Askari's civilian types might also. I think that Askari's Ethiopian spearmen and safari servants, are in direct use.

In general the Ethiopians being christians wear no fez and women have their faces free. Perry and Askari miniatures civilians might need head swaps with  ethiopian ones. But these do no not exist.

Strategia e Tattica have a web presence but postage from Italy can be an issue. Maybe an Italy based LAFer could assist you?

Thank you all for your help, that's just what I needed!  I hadn't looked at Eureka yet, what an amazing range of civilians!  Africans are sadly limited to captive status, but the captive women pack may be useful:

Strategia e Tactica are OK but all male and quite noble (I should have mentioned that I'm representing an Ethiopian village occupied by the Italians, so I suspect I may need more women and children...)

I will have a look at all these closely and let you know how I get on.

Cheers
