Title: Dirty Pair (and Crusher Joe) New Pictures 11/12/11
Post by: mpennock on 30 January 2011, 05:50:02 AM
I thought I'd post a few pictures of my current project; a tabletop rendition of the classic '80s anime series Dirty Pair.
The infamous Pair themselves

And a research lab to investigate

Reaper mini goon-squad? Check.

Nekkid chicks being experimented on? Check.

Evil Doctors? Check.

Scantily clad protagonists? Check.

Slavish attention to detail? Double check!

Well done! :D

Nice work - the terrain looks particularly well-done; both reminiscent of the serial as well as the Warren comics!

But no Mughi? Tut-tut-tut. ;)

Love the Dirty Pair. Where's Mughi? Great work on the lab. :o I do hope you made lots of damage markers or ruined versions of the terrain pieces :D

Never a big fan of "The Lovely Angels" myself, but you've done a really nice job capturing the look of them. Excellent terrain for a wide variety of scenarios, too.

My daughter picked up a "Dirty Pair" book at an Anime convention.

They appear to be SF novels featuring a team of scantily clad, nubile, sexually hyper and quite dangerous space cops. ???

Lovely terrain though. Could be good for all sorts of games from James Bond to Aliens or even Star Wars!

Don't confuse the recent American manga version by Adam Warren with the original anime version- Warren's take on them is much more sexy and hyper, the original 1980s anime films have much more plot (although the Dirty Pair still leave a trail of destruction in their wake in any incarnation...).

I seem to have forgotten to include pictures of Mughi. I'd better fix that before his fan club gets upset.  ;)

He's the short, dark and tentacled one in the middle. :)

I've also finished a new version of Yuri, throwing her Bloody Card, but she's a bit bigger than Kei, so I can't use her until I do a new Kei conversion.

Finally, I finished a couple air cars for games outside the lab.

The lab set uses some resin pieces from Armorcast and JR Miniatures, but the rooms and hallways are scratch built out of foam core and plastic sheet. They're designed to be modular.

The cars are plastic kits from Nitto, and were released as a tie in with the 1983 anime movie Crusher Joe. Back in the day you could find them in hobby shops for less than five bucks apiece, which is where I got mine. I still see them on ebay every once in a while, where they seem to go for $20 to $30. They are the "BMW A795" and "Benz 600" small box kits in 1/60 scale.

As an aside, the Crusher Joe novels were written by the same author who created the Dirty Pair, and both series are set in the same universe, so I borrow whatever I can from the Crusher Joe tie-ins.

Since my initial post I have been continuing to work on this project on and off, and have finally gotten around to posting pictures of some of the toys I've completed in the last couple of months.

First up, I'd posted a while back that I was working on a new version of Kei to go along with the new Yuri. Here, she is, alongside her partner and their VW convertible air car:

The air car is kind of a scratch build - I modeled the basic shape with 3D modeling software and then had it printed in nylon on a rapid prototype machine. I added the final details using wire and sheet plastic:

Here we have a couple Crawler defense drones. They're plastic kits manufactured by Nitto as tie-ins to the Crusher Joe movie. They're supposed to be 1/60 scale, so they fit in pretty well with 25mm figures.

Another Crusher Joe tie-in, this time an Ostall defense drone. This particular vehicle is probably better recognized as the Locust light 'mech from Battletech, but here it is in its original context and in its original size....

A Heavy Fox patrol air car, once again originally from Crusher Joe.

Though I needed more than one for the scenario I had in mind:

I started working on some United Galacta Navy crew figures (the WWWA can't be expected to do all of the work...), and here are the first six figures that I finished, along with a pair of hover bike riders for the next chase scene:

Enjoy!

Looking good as always there Mr. P
But hey, you always had a good eye when it came to scratchbuilding and conversions.
Keep it up.

How much did the rapid prototype cost ya from beginning to end?

Grimm

The rapid prototype of the VW cost me around $25, including shipping and the bits and pieces to complete the scratch build. The nylon has a slightly pebbly surface, and I've made a few changes to the 3D model to compensate for minor assembly issues, so my current plans are to order another model in a polished nylon material (which will cost about $5 more) and use it as a master to make an RTV mold. Any further vehicles I will cast out of two part resin.

I've got 2-3 more air car designs in the works. Its just a matter of ordering samples to see how they turn out.

I'm shocked at how cheap the rapid prototyping was! I was always under the impression it was damn expensive.

Nice group of models you have there and the lab looks pretty good too. Looks handy for single-board gaming.

Yeah, I was a bit surprised, too. A buddy of mine does costuming as a hobby, and uses the service to make some of his smaller props. I decided to give it a try from a wargaming perspective, and it has certainly made some of my scratch building easier. Fortunately, I work in an engineering office and have the solid modeling software on my computer, and can work on the 3D models during my lunch breaks.

With all that rare Crusher Joe stuff, you should find minis for the crusher team  :)
I'd like to see the setting of the second OVA, "Ultimate Weapon Ash", presented as a tabletop planet of killbots.

As a matter of fact....

Takara made a 1/48 scale kit of the Crusher's Galleon tank, and I've got one sitting on the edge of my work table, waiting for me to get the time to start building. Also gracing the work table are in-process conversions for Alfin and Talos. My current plans are to make conversions for both Joe's 2161 team (Joe, Talos, Alfin and Ricky) and Dan's 2141 team (Dan, Talos, Gambino and Bard).

Those killbots from Ultimate Weapon Ash might just make an appearance as well....

Slayers – that’s an interesting idea. I hadn’t really looked into it before, but there’s no reason that it couldn’t be done. The main characters would probably be a rather involved conversion because the anime/manga high fantasy look is so stylized, but once you get two or three characters done the rest of what you need for a game would be off-the-shelf figures and terrain. Maybe I’ll keep my eyes open for figures to convert into Lina and Gourry….

Unless I get back to working on my Ghost in the Shell, Armored Hunter Mellowlink and/or Mospeada projects first.

On the Dirty Pair/Crusher Joe front, I spent my painting time over the weekend playing with green stuff, files and razor blades, and now have Joe, Alfin and Ricky ready for priming and painting. Talos is, sadly, still undergoing surgery, but should be ready for painting later this week.

I've had a few delays thanks to the intervention of Real Life, but I finally managed to finish the first of the Crusher teams from Crusher Joe. Below we have the crew of the Minerva; Ricky (engineer), Talos (pilot), Joe (team leader) and Alfin (navigator).

I also put the finishing touches on a generic light attack aircraft, small enough for use on the tabletop. The aircraft itself is a scratch build, based upon a model from the SF3D kit series;

This is a fantastic project.  I know next to nothing about the anime(s) involved but the whole thing is brilliant, with the lab and in particular the air cars my favourites.

If you ever feel like selling on copies of the RP-ed cars then let me know :)

If you could point me in the direction of somewhere that sells similar sci-fi vehicle kits or gashapon or whatever then I would be grateful.  They would be ideal for a Judge Dredd setting.

Inspiring stuff :)

Well, it has been a while since I posted anything about this project's progress, but I ran the game last weekend at Rock-Con, our local convention, and thought I'd post some pictures of the ensuing chaos. I ended up with four players and split them into three teams; two playing the Dirty Pair, one running a team of generic Crushers, and one running a Corporate special ops team.

A shuttle crash in a city park

Kei deals with a aerial gun drone....

...and has a disagreement with the local police (and no, she didn't blow up their car, the drone did it).

An Ostall drone threatens the Crusher and Corporate teams while a civilian photographer looks on.

The game played really well and everyone had a good time.

Is that Ian Kim's Emiko on that poster?

Very nice set up.  I love all the clean edges and bright colours.  It's easy to make things look plausible by dirtying them up, and much harder this way, but you've succeeded.

The Fruity Oaty Bar poster was borrowed with extreme predjudice from a Serenity/Firefly fan site, so I'm not sure of the artwork's origin.

Just chiming in to say that this is one of the most interesting projects I have ever seen. I have never heard of that anime series, but I really like how you recreated one of your (childhood?) memories.

Thanks, everyone, for all of the positive comments. It's been a fun project.

Yes, yes they do...

Fantastic Worlds from Rattrap. The rules work really well right out of the book, but I gave the Pair a custom flaw (appropriately titled 'It's Not Our Fault') so that whenever either one of them uses a Hero Point it starts an incrementing test. When the test reaches 20 collateral damage happens.

Ground Zero Games do a couple of 25mm variants of the pair - Suki & Yaki: The Trouble Consultants (GZ-03 & GZ-03A)

http://shop.groundzerogames.net/index.php?_a=viewCat&catId=93

I believe Kev White did the second pair for GZG. He definately did the non-Deunan and Briarios in the same listing. Great little figures!

If you ever feel like selling on copies of the RP-ed cars then let me know

If you could point me in the direction of somewhere that sells similar sci-fi vehicle kits or gashapon or whatever then I would be grateful.  They would be ideal for a Judge Dredd setting.

I started using Shapeways about six months ago to make some models for me that I couldn't find anywhere else. For anyone interested in the cars, I opened a Shapeways shop a couple weeks ago:

http://www.shapeways.com/shops/arcticskunk

It's a mix of stuff that I wanted for various games, and stuff for my gaming buddies' projects, but I like to think that other gamers might find it useful, too. We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread......

Bookmarked your Shapeways page. ;)

Can't decide what to go for first! 8)

Edit: Just wondering whether your Shapeways stuff, particularly the brilliant SF civilian/urban vehicles, could be rescaled for 15mm (1:100)?

I think you'd be tapping into an under-exploited area of that market. The 15mm crowd on TMP would go mad for them. Just a thought.
