Title: The Beetle-Bots go to war...
Post by: Inso on 30 January 2011, 06:17:45 PM
It seems that I am building another new army.  I don't know how it turned from a support unit into an army...but I seem to have got the muse so here is the first troop:

And this is what 12 of them look like base-coated ready for a wash in Devlan Mud:

I have a couple of Destroyers that are being converted and a bunch of components for building a transport option...but it seems I need to buy more...don't know why though  ???

Inso, you are a genius.

Now tell us how you did it, or we will have to hurt you.

Love it! simple and not too parts intensive (you've used pretty much bits from one box!).

Well done. This would make a great 'pre-long-dark' Imperial army, before thinking machines were outlawed for being coruptable by chaos.

Some type of Robot maniple?

They are only base-coated at the moment...they still have a way to go yet :) .

As for how they are made:

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d161/Inso/Beetlebots/BotHowTo1.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d161/Inso/Beetlebots/BotHowTo2.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d161/Inso/Beetlebots/BotHowTo3.jpg

For the axe-hands, I used the hand that normally fires the Gaussgun with the axe chopped from the front of the weapon.  All I have used is the Necron Warriors box and some plastic tube...the rest is Greenstuff and Glue :).

A lot of green-stuff to come but this is where they are at so far :) .

Nice, personally the beetle bots could do with being positioned a little more upright I reckon, (looking down and not where they're going currently), or even mounted higher up at the rear of the flyer, (turn the ship around?).

I really like the flyers.  Can't wait to see them finished.

The fliers have taken a step backwards...in fact...they are in bits.  Someone mentioned that the back would make a good front so I had to try it out...then I didn't like it and looked at the pose of the rider and...you get the idea  lol ...

...currently, it is a body with an upside-down base glued to it...

I am still working on it though :) .

No worries...I wasn't 100% happy with them (even at the WIP stage - rider too far forward) and have changed direction with them.  The riders are now standing on a fighting platform a bit like a chariot.  That makes it easier to fit them in without hanging over the front too much and also opens up the possibilities for a Lord to ride one.

I have got a bit further with the bots...just need to paint the bases:

I will paint up another bunch and then try to get hold of some tiny transfers to mark them all up.

I'm still ticking along with the Destroyers, a Lord and a Tomb Spider...

There's more on Inso's World :) .

Those are really nice.  They kinda reminded me of these guys that my kid used to watch:

I was just thinking of who they remind me of, and ia m sure it is because i have been watching it here and there on TV since it has been on. The heads especially and the shape of the body of the Lord model but they remind me of the Golden Army from Hellboy 2: The Golden Army.

On a side note i do really like them alot. Need to get the whole army done so we can see the full force on march to conquer the universe. :-)

These are for the 40k right?

I think that these beat the necrons, Tau and rest of the crap  110 / 0. Very nice job with the conversions but if I may say, I would use a little more highlighting / washes in the paint job.
I'm serious when I say that these should be commercially produced instead of the before mentioned crap.

keep up the good work!
Title: Re: The Beetle-Bots go to war...
Post by: Inso on 29 July 2011, 08:56:51 AM
Cheers :) .

At the moment, I just want to get them all up to a good tabletop standard (neat, basecoated and shaded).  Once I have got them all built and painted to that standard, I want to add some edge highlights and a small amount of decoration (maybe squad markings and rank).

I have another two of the Scooters on the go and have bits and bobs for another 18 Beetle-Bots, 2 Scooters (one a heavy and the other a mounted lord) and a number of tomb spiders (which aren't going to look like spiders but will hopefully look like ogre sized Beetle-Bots with servo arms).

I have some ideas for the scarabs...but they are very foetal at the moment.

Thanks :)...glad these are going down OK (I know they are a bit 'cute' for some people).  I may update the upper fairing with a gem effect at some point but I'm not sure about it at the moment...it may be a bit 'glitzy' for them...I'll have a think about it :) .

Oh...by the way...the Death-Scooters are all finished...

I will be putting together a Lord on a scooter but don't plan on any vehicles other than that and another heavier version of a Death-Scooter.

I want to build three Tomb Spiders but they will be more akin to ogre sized Beetle-Bots than vehicles.

Here's a question...should I have squad leaders?  They would have the same equipment as the rest but would have a slightly different head.

So...squad leaders; yes or no?

I guess it depends what kind of rules you'll use for playing - if they call for a squad leader, you'll probably have to. From an aesthetic point of view, having one "overseer" with antennae on the head (or similar) would look nice (and if properly done, reasonably funny), although it distracts a bit from the "soulless automaton" look by increasing individuality.

I'd guess you'd pull it off nicely, whatever you do, so nothing to lose and a lot to gain - go for it.

Actually I'm pretty sure inso has mentioned he builds these armies for the heck of it, rather then for any game to play.
I agree, having leaders would take away from the automaton without personality look, and I guess it would not make sense to machines to make specific leader robots for a group either.

From a modelling point of view, I think squad leaders are nice chances to break the monotony and have some fun. personally, I would make them.
I have to disagree with YPU about their sense in a bot army. Maybe they could have the role to be main order distributor. Something like the leader receive a leading impulse from a central unit and re-distribute the order to the rest of the team because of the eventual benefits of decentralized communication (probably has no sense at all but sounds sci-fi nice :) )
I do not know how to do squad leaders in your army, but please do not make the appearence of something similar to star wars phantom menace idiot droids.

I was thinking that squad leaders would possibly get a change of head and maybe a more bulky backpack (to highlight extra comms).

I have no plans to paint different coloured shoulders like the star wars droid armies...I want them to be a bit more imposing but not so different as to be like the lord.

Thanks for the input :) and I'm glad these are getting a good reception.

I thought I'd blow the dust off this topic again because I have got my hands on a couple of the new boxed sets and thought that a hover-boarding Bot with blades would make a good Wraith:

I am still working on the first one and am almost finished with the second one so work is continuing (even if it is at a slow pace).

Whilst digging through the boxed set, I found that there are loads of spare bits so I experimented a bit and came up with a random sniper type robot...

Oh yes, like those snipre spiders. They would work well as 6mm armour. Excuse my ignorance (never played 40K) but are they all composed of Necron parts?
Title: Re: The Beetle-Bots go to war...
Post by: Inso on 01 January 2012, 10:44:44 AM
The sniper tank is a mix of Necron Lychguard and Immortal parts and will get filled with a small amount of green-stuff.  The surfers are made from the same boxed sets but with a small amount of sprue and plasticard added.

The tank is one of the rear parts of a torso, the cage bit that goes over the top (split down the middle to make two sides of legs) and a rifle from the Immortal box trimmed down.

Easy peasy :)

The sculpting may be a bit tricky (if you aren't used to it) but all the rest is just a case of trimming in the right areas and pinning/gluing bits together.  It can't be that hard to do because I can manage it  :D .

I will sort out a few updates to my original How-To guide that I did so that I can show the simplified steps that I now take.  Here are the old ones for the bots:

I have now added a hose from the weapon to the body of the Immortal and have also put together a guide to building them here (in 5 pages!):
