Hello all,
My current project centres on representing the d&d party I'm in. The figures are found, and largely done, and the horse and cart is found, and also largely done. However for the travelling home I'm looking for a decently sized Romani/ov wagon, similar to the following -
(http://www.bruceongames.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/gypsy-caravan.jpg)
I'm aware of the Old Glory/West Wind one in the different style, but it's far too small in scale terms for someone to really live in it. Does anyone have any good suggestions?
-
The basics of the wagon and horses are pretty much the same (save possible tack differences that you can explain away in a fantasy setting), so I would buy a basic wagon from somewhere and scratchbuild the upper part.

Found this with Google. Google is your friend ;D

O Scale is the one you'd want for 28mm... that's a nice find there, bandit!

EXTREMELY expensive, but really really well done!
yeah, google is the friend of everyone!

There is a British O scale train company which makes a very pretty vardo. Can't remeber the name of it...

GH00048 - Gypsy Caravan [GH00048] in the West Wind ranges for Vampire Wars?
-
Cheers for the suggestions everyone! I'm already aware of the Old Glory/West Wind one Poiter50, but it's an option to fall back on, though the lasercut kits seem to actually be less expensive. So far it does seem that getting a wagon base and scratchbuilding the upper part is the way to go.

I scratched built this one:

..and started on a round topped one but never finished it.

Nice painting there! Have you any pictures of how far you got with the round top?

Very nice argsilverson, I can see that approach working for me on a slightly larger scale. Where did you get those wheels, and if they were separate, does the seller do a slightly smaller pair also?
-
Fancy that. There's a prominent Gypsy group in my group's current D&D campaign. lol
Alas, we don't really use a lot of physical models, so never looked into it myself.

OK, Folks, if I can be of any help, just ask ... :D
I did the wheels for Metal Magic a loooong time ago, they are no longer available.
The cart is scratchbuild and the roof is just a copper wire frame covered with printed paper, fixed with some thinned white glue. Really easy.
:)

I found dimensions which measure (in real life) 11 feet long, 8 feet tall and 7 feet wide for the cabin part. I imagine with the wheels it would be taller. How would that convert to 28mm dimensions?

Assuming 1/56th scale or thereabouts, about 2 1/3 inches long, 1 3/4 inches tall and 1 1/2 inches wide.
((<distance in feet> x <12 to get us inches>) divided by <56 to get us scale sizes in (real) inches>)

:? That's wee. Cheers, Wirelizard.
If I were building my own I think I'd want it a bit bigger. What do you think of 3 inches by 2 inches by 2 inches? Is that too big, Geckilian?

Generally I would steer towards smaller vehicles, largely because all game table space is precious.
However, if you really want large, a fantasy setting can explain away the overly large vehicle.
-
After posting the above, I threw together a mock-up and that was too big, clearly too big.
-
Considering it'll be used as essentially a mobile house, 3" by 2" by 2" looks quite alright when I mocked it up. I think I'll put it together bearing that in mind, cheers.

My thought was that as the traveling folk use the caravans to carry possessions from place to place but do cooking and living in the out-of-doors when they've stopped, I didn't think it would need to be as large as a modern caravan.
Whatever size it ends up, we expect to see your photos soon.

Don't Westwind make a 28mm Gypsy Caravan in white metal?

You are the third or fourth person pointing this out and Geckilian already stated he was aware of it in his first post. lol
