Title: MEGA-Fauna, Lulu The Land Waster...Picture Heavy
Post by: DeafNala on February 08, 2011, 02:58:01 AM
WARNING! The following is the product of an admittedly Strange Old Man with, at best, a tenuous hold on Reality...such as it is. Those of discerning taste are advised to go no further.

There now, if anyone is still with me, in the dim & distant past...well about five years ago, Friend John sent me a pair of plastic Rhinos that he had picked up from Michael's. From this less than promising start I came up with THE WONDROUSLY WEIRD mini I'm about to inflict on you...my dog converted the other one. There is some discussion as to which conversion turned out better; she seemed to enjoy the process somewhat more than moi...really got her teeth into it.

And now, without further delay, for your entertainment & edification, I present LULU THE LAND WASTER, SCOURGE OF THE OLD WORLD:

Intriguing.  The lipstick is a nice addition.

Hi DeafNala, your intro really made me laugh! I believe I have discerning taste and I went through to the end of your post and I loved it; its very original. It reminds me of the old (80s)  White Dwarf pics of Orc/goblins riding palanquins on elephants. I like the gobbo paint scheme (red/green), the wood , the bolt thrower, the base (I am going to stop because I have a long list).

Nice mini, glad you posted it

Great stuff!  I get the impression that Lulu tolerates the gobbos with a quiet resignation.

No pics of your dog's conversion work?

Inspired!  That looks like something that'd be featured in a late eighties issue of White Dwarf and that, my friend, is a GOOD THING!

Thanks MUCHO for all the kind words...I always find positive commentary a motivating factor. Having my stuff compared to the 80s White Dwarf photos that feature such great pieces  as Michael Imings space ship "Mary Lou" is indeed quite a compliment.
I had meant to go back & tone down the lipstick, but everyone seemed to like it; SO...since it wasn't broke, I refrained from fixing it.
Most of my photos were taken by other Folks, which means sending the minis away for photography. My little furry buddy was too possessive of her treasure to have it sent anywhere. Photos of Lulu were taken be Edwin the Mordheimer; she's on semi-permanent loan to him. This is partially due to his philosophy that "if he can eat it; it's his". Here's a hoto of The Man putting his philosophy onto practice:

In the interest of saving the piece & his digestive system I figured I'd let him keep it. Pretty scary picture, eh?!

There is a certain... similarity between these two.  :D

Nice model, it really has the 80's feeling. And of course your model is proof that goblins aren't primitive creatures but rather intelligent Latin-lovers... so to speak - meaning of course they love Latin (schudder - I just had this weird picture before my eyes... best forget about it, where's the booze?)

Thanks, Doomhippie! I was hoping you'd stumble across this thread. I too am subject to these "visions". With moi it's probably a manifestation of my "better living through chemistry" misspent youth.
I'm definitely a Goblin Guy. As a long time solo gamer I tend to discard those background fluff ideas that I consider drivel...G.W.'s take on Orcs & Goblins is a prime example. I like to disassociate the two species...my new Goblins are reverting to a burnt orangish skin tone with a sand color pigment for the Night Goblins. I envision the Goblins of both types to be rather clever, just somewhat impeded by their intake of those interesting mushrooms.
I'll be posting the rest of this Mordheim War band in a bit, but here's an example of one of my scholarly UberGoblins:

Wow!!! Splendid stuff all around!

For years I've had a rhino staring at me on the shelf.. It was meant to become an ork squiggoth. But nothing happened. Maybe I should give it another go.

Thanks, Doc! By all means, do up your Rhino...it would be great to know I gave you a bit of motivation.

Now that guy is on steroids, nice model! I really like the scroll with the lantern and the fact that he looks like he is missing one of his front teeth.

Brilliant stuff - definitely puts Michael Immig's dinosaurs with palanquins to shame!  ;D

I like the idea of Ubergoblins spouting latin and never were truer words spake - In Fungo Veritas

I put "In mushrooms we trust" into a Latin translator online and got - fungi speramus in which also had a nice ring to it!

Unfortunately my GCSE latin only stretched as far as Metallis Gravis for my old rogue trader marines - even then I might have got it off an old GW transfer...  :D

Canis est in Via just didn't sound macho enough!

It's eyes and the wart on its nose reminds me of I girl I once knew.  Beautiful paint job and great details.  The wood grains came out nice.  Is that the base that came with the model or did you sculpt it?

Thanks again for all the kind words, Guys...you've made my day.

@Damien: the UberGoblins (count as Orcs for Mordheim) gain their size, strength, attitude, & often astounding stupidity from a variety of mushrooms that possess a high level of fungeroid. The mini has the arms & torso is from a plastic Orc, the legs are from a Goblin, the head is a Night Goblin, & some Milliput for the cowl.

@Thantsants: after suffering the untold misery that only several years of Latin can insure, I can only remember odd phrases. The "in fungo veritas" = "in fungus there is truth" (take off on "in vino veritas"  = "in wine there is truth") matches up with the banner insignia, "veritas liberatis"  = "the truth will set you free". The UberGoblin's back-banner, "cogito ergo sum" = "I think therefore I am" is a quote from Rene DesCartes...I knew Philosophy courses would bear fruit someday.

@Bloodysword: I imagine that Lulu has the same to moods as my Ex; i.e., crabby & stupid...sorry to hear about your former female friend...especially the wart.
For the wood, I just roughed up the grain with a course jewelers saw; did a dark brown base coat with a couple of dry brushes of the dark brown mixed with increasing amounts of desert sand. The base is a G.W. chariot base; I did the scenicing with plumber's epoxy (similar to Milliput), sand & static grass...it's not quite as garish in real life.

Delightful introduction and conversion! I echo the comments that this has the distinct 80s feel about them and I like your take on the 'shroom-indulging goblins 8)

Thanks for the commentary, Pil. I find positive feedback to be very uplifting...at my age, anything going in an upward direction is a plus. The sense of Good Fellowship I get here on LAF is also high motivating.
I went from historical to fantasy back in the late 70s & early 80s. I associate vivid colors with the nature of things fantastical. So I guess I'm locked into an 80s style.
I blame my LOVE of Goblins on baseball in general & my devotion to the Brooklyn Dodgers in particular. The Dodgers, affectionately known as "Da Bums", were a hard luck, blue collar team that forever seemed to have their hopes dashed by the oh-so-chic, upper crust N.Y. Yankees...the motto of all Dodger fans was "wait til next year". In other words, I root for the underdogs...Goblins are THE ULTIMATE underdogs. As a Child of the 60s, I have a similar view of mushroom as the Night Goblins...Oh wow the colors, Man!
Here a a few Mega Mushrooms from a W.I.P. gaming board: they're about 9"/230mm tall:

I'd take those shrooms right away! Anything weird to the brain is worth experiencing, I'd say.  :D

Anyway, I like your approach to goblins. The underdogs who dream of hitting it big only once! I guess that's a feeling most people can understand and have to some degree in themselves. The good old working class hero idea.

I also like Latin or even the GW-idea of pseudo-Latin as the language of the educated people in a fantasy setting. That's were medieval romantics and history come together. Though I personally am more into Tolkien's various Elvish languages.

@Thantsants: Interestingly that's the name of one of my tanks for my Imperial Guard army. I wonder what kind of music you liked at that time...  ;)

Very nice mushrooms, and I agree, goblins always have a certain charm about them. The Metalus Gravis is featured in teh Rogue Trader Compendium as the name of an Ork dreadnought in a piece of artwork by Pete Knifton (p.61), that's where I saw it first at least 8)

'Nice shrooms man', I like them a lot. Its too bad that GW is only giving us night goblins now; thier older sculpts had more variety and are more fun to paint.

Don't stop posting

Thanks again, Guys. If you liked these Little Shrooms, you'll love the Tower of Glum once I get it posted. It's a 30" Mushroom with attached structures on my W.I.P. gaming board...The Ultimate in Mushroom Mania...so far. Come to think of it; why should you have to wait:

This is the Tower of Glum as it stands now:

This is is prior to its present altered state:

I started posting The Red Brotherhood. Wading through the more than 130 photos Edwin took in no particular sequence required a break both for moi & Photo Bucket.

Impressive! I think the stonework could do with a bit more variety in colour, some brown and green streaks here and there, some lighter (bird poop) and darker (moisture) areas, anything to break up those large areas of grey. Since it's a WIP I hope I'm in time with my comment. I'd love to see the structure and the shroom together 8)

Thanks, Pil!
You are in time. The W.I.P. shot is just primer coated; I paint all my things both terrain & minis black, followed by a white dry-brush to bring out the details; THEN I paint them up. You're not the first to mention the lack of color...so don't feel bad. I'm going to do the natural stonework in bands of color like Southwestern striated rock formations. The ruin & intact buildings will sport bright Renaissance paint jobs.

Actually you are seeing the BIG Mushroom pieces together...they're the same piece. I had finished the Beasty; then decided to add the structures. SO it went from the colorful piece to black & white; now it will go back to colorful again.

When I post up all the W.I.P shots, I'll be sure to mention that it's only primer coated. I would have forgotten AGAIN without your comment...so thanks for the positive feedback, Amigo!

That is a great building.  How long did it take to get to its current stage?  Every time I start a big project like that I get board half way through and the project sits for ever.  I love the mushrooms as well.  Can't wait to see it on a game table mixed in with other terrain.

Thanks, Bloodysword! I've been plodding along for about two months now. The Beasty is somewhat further along than in the photo...somewhat. I've been working on it between doing its denizens & a SPOOKY Forest Board. Keeping the three things going at once keeps each fresh & gives me intervening time to come up with new ideas.
I've started slapping on some paint, which should help picking out the individual pieces.I'll post some W.I.P. photos once it gets a little further along...read: once I'm sure it will actually be completed in my life time.
