Title: Cool Cthulhu flick
Post by: CptJake on February 28, 2011, 09:48:00 PM
Last night I watched "The last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu"

I like it.  Low budget, but the effects were decent, the actors pretty good, and the story was cool too.  A fun flick to watch.  It will never win an oscar but I liked it.

A Cthulhu cult is trying to bring back the Big C and needs a relic to do so.  A 'Save the world from Cthulhu' cult gives this relic to HP's last decendent (some geentic advantage against mythos beasties).  The poor last reletive is NOT a Lovecraft fan, but his comic book geek buddy and he recruit another geek to help them out.  Along the way they fight cultists, deep ones, and some others.  You even get an animated History of the Big C explanation in which the Big C tears a T-rex in half.

Again, not a big budget, but it was a fun movie to watch.

Two tentacles up!

Jake

You're kinder than I, but then again my wife liked it which casts doubt on my taste.

That animated history of Cthulhu was the best bit and I'm tempted to use it to introduce new CoC/SA players to the genre.

I'm waiting to receive this in the mail.

Let me suggest another Cthulhu esque film I just watched called "Primal" I watched this weekend.

It is very Cthulhu themed.  A 12000 year old horror in the wooded mountains of Austrailia.  It is very much worth a watch as well.

I would compare it and rate it alongside "The Ruins".

In my opinion, the best 'Cthulhu' flick is this one: http://www.cthulhulives.org/cocmovie/index.html

Pure awesome!

Oh, and they just finished 'The Whisperer in Darkness'... here's the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_ee9K9hXtw&feature=player_embedded

I can't wait until 'Whisperer' is released... it looks AMAZING.

Oh, and I agree: the animated 'History of Cthulhu' part of 'The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu' is the best part of the movie.

I'm hoping the upcoming big budget 'Mountains of Madness' ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1118070/ ) leads to LOTS more Lovecraft-inspired films.

What a disappointment. Not sure what I was expecting exactly, but it was not good. The story was non-existent (fine. It is a comedy), The characters were all so unlikable (Again, comedy), the main characters were soooooooo unlikable it blew my mind! The filming/editing/effects were fine but couldn't save what was for me a pitiful attempt to 'cool up' Lovecraft for a new generation. This proves that Cthulhu and comedy do not mix well...if at all. :? Watch the trailer...it has all the best bits and none of the worst...rant over...

This sounds pretty epic! Although as zobo1942 said; a truly excellent rendition of a Cthulhu film is undoubtedly HPLHS's Call of Cthulhu! It took much to get the special Combo bundle delivered over here (especially with Customs charges and everything!) but it was well, well worth it! I cannot wait for Whisperer in Darkness... although worryingly it looks as if the Mi Go are CG. :? They should use Black Cat Bases Mi Go! Those things are just the mutt's nuts! The Deep One's Danglies! lol

I do want to see this however, even if only for the animated bit- the prehistory bits are my fave parts of his stories. Pity I don't have Sky. Black Cat Ben, does your recorder allow you to burn onto DVDs?

I think the Mi-Go in Whisperer should be at least partially practical.  If you check the Whisperer blog over at HPLHS (http://www.cthulhulives.org/Whisperer/twid-blog.html) and scroll all the way back to Aug 3, 2009, you'll see the beginnings of a Head from Yuggoth.

I don't know about this film, and I rarely am one for comedies, but I do look forward to HPLHS's next film.

No worries, I typed before I thought. I understand it's being released. ;D

I don't think MoM is being made now... AGAIN!  :'( Maybe it'll eventually be picked up. I'm still waiting for hte animated Conan: Red Nails!

LidlessEye- Hey you're right! I have to watch the trailer again. Maybe it's a puppet then, and not CG. I hope so- a puppet would be so much cooler.

It is a stop-motion puppet. Unless they went to the trouble to animate a CG horror like that lol.

Finally watched this movie over the weekend.

It was so stupid that I couldn't help myself and I watched it again.  lol lol

 lol lol lol

I found it very funny.  The Cthuhlu stuff is bastardized pretty well, so don't expect faithful translations here, but as a dorky comedy, I enjoyed it heartily.
