Title: As everyone else has gone mad posting Sudan pics...
Post by: Gluteus Maximus on 01 March 2011, 02:00:16 PM
Egged on by Malamute, Svennn, Cap'n B etc I've posted some pics of my Mahdists from a game we played at Triples 2009 in my gallery. They were taken on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons, when the inexplicable headaches and blurry vision had worn off  :?

Figures are a mix of Perry and Redoubt (yes, surprisingly they worked well together whan used in separate units). The gunners are a mix of Foundry and Cannon Fodder.

The rules used were the excellent Afriboria set. They are perfect for fast-play, multi-player games and each time we've used them they gave close games which were a huge amount of fun to play. In both the demo games we played at Triples, the games were in the balance until the very last move. Thanks Rudi!  :D

As ever, the usual excuses apply - "wargames standard painting", "old-age induced poor eyesight" etc, but please feel free to criticize at will!

Turning 50 has obviously had a positive effect on you. ::)... lol

Nothing wrong with these old chap, a pleasure to look at them.(my favourites are the captured artillerymen and the sneaky snipers.) Long may it continue :D

those are also very nice.
I use some Redoubt British. They really work well with the Perries.

Oh see how cathartic your first post was :D

But we want more because these are great and everything LAF is about.

Don't leave it 50 days until the next pics let alone another 50 years  :)

I opened my mail today and found four feathers. Looks like I am off to the Sudan then.

Good game. Only problem I can see is a lack of gunboat.

Sorry:

There's two to make up for my oversight  lol

Not my models, and didn't get to do much in the game, but as you say essential to a good Sudan game.

Thanks Bjoern! I know many would shudder at the thought of them used together, but we had figures from all the 28mm Sudan maufacturers and there were no negative comments by the paying public, so it must have been ok  :)

Well, there's about 75 in the full album, but that might be pushing my luck  lol

Most are the other guys' figures, but I'll see if any more are in focus (it really was difficult to see properly in the morning sessions ::) ) and if any others ore ok, I'll post more in dribs and drabs.

Basically because I'm a idle sod.

Good-o!

Nice to see some of your work, Gluteus.

I really like those gunners!

EDIT: And they're available on my home turf, too! Thanks Glute! I would never have known, otherwise!

Thanks! Yes, they were for a while the only enslaved gun crew available. I ordered them from Oz, and got them painted and within a few months the Perrys decided to release their own  lol  I've got a few of the CFM Mahdist infantry in jibbehs to, which they kindly sent as samples, and they are also very nice. They are compatible with Perry, Foundry etc which makes them well worth having - even at shipping costs from Down-under.

Nice job Gluteus!

You have awaken the Hadendowah in me   :-*

I am impressed by those movement trays you had in the gallery. The individual bases hardly show at all. Do you have any experience to share making those?

Nice GM :) And Happy Birthday ;)

Thanks! It was pretty good - I got a Lemmy t-shirt, 4 packs of Perry Hadendowah and their book Go Strong into the Desert - and that's on top of the concert ticket & t-shirt for Black Country Communion's first proper gig in Wolverhampton  ;D

Happy day indeed!

Everyone needs a few hundred Hadendowah as far as I'm concerened  lol

As for the tray (there's only one so far as I'm so slow at making things  :'(  ) here's what I did.

I used a sheet of fairly thick plastic card (either .30 or .50), then made frames using that "right-angle" plastic strip that railway modellers use for angle-iron etc. Once that was dry I just filled in the gaps with my home-made basing compound (PVA glue, DIY filller, sand and a spot of brown paint), with a few rocks and tufts of grass from a doormat. Next, I dry brushed in a sandy yellow shades and highlighted with the sort of sandy-beige colour used in outdoor wall paint and finally stuck some Woodland Scenics middle green foliage on for mimosa scrub. The base is a bit more of a yellowish shade than in the photograph, but for some reason my auto-fix didn't bring the true colour out like it normally does. The hardest bit was getting the holes the exact size and if I were to post a "bird's eye view" shot, you'd see some pretty big gaps. They say the camera never lies, well......   lol

Captain Blood has done a far better version here:

Thanks for the tutorial! I might steal that concept, in some way I need to arrange my horde for the New York Draft Riots. Maybe using some kind of brick street base would make gaps less visible.

Steal away my friend. It will make a very welcome change from me stealing everyone else's stuff  lol

As to gaps, so long as you are precise in your cutting/building they should be unobtrusive. I'm a very average terrain maker and mine isn't too bad. Bricks/cobbles should work well.

Whatever you decide, I'll be delighted to see your results  :D
