Title: Formless Spawn of Tsathoggua - new sculpt
Post by: CrumbReaper on March 07, 2011, 09:56:52 AM
Hi gang, finally have the detailing on my take on The Formless Spawn of Tsathoggua, I wanted to try for something that fitted with the "formless" theme and the way the entity envelopes it's victims to devour them.......... and the shifting patterns and textures of it's form................. and then I slipped into the warm comforting arms of insanity and sculpted this!

I've undercoated 1 half of the creature so you can see where the 2 halves meet, it's fully detailed on all surfaces and now we all need to shout "IT'S BEHIND YOU" to save Andy 4A's Sea Demon....... but we'll leave the Space Marine to his own devices! (figures for scale only, not included, copyright their respective owners yadda yadda)............

Excellent way to think outside the box!

That is really interesting (I mean that in a good way!), I applaud your attempt to give a formless spawn some form!

Thanks all  8)

I think I need to refine it, somehow it looks too chunky and while I've
got some sense of movement and oozing it's still a bit static too.......

I'm pleased with how the sculpting is coming along but think I need to push
myself more on the form of this one, happy with all the gribbly detailing though  :)

It's a nice attempt don't get me wrong, but as you say, doesn't feel protplasmic and formless, doesn't have that living liquid feel.

Understand that some bio-mech bases are on the cards, sound good, (a little brumby told me! ;)).

I was going to comment on just that.
The detailing is excellent and I see the basic "form" that you are trying to achieve, but I felt that it looks a little on the chunky side and needed a little bit more dynamic shape to convey movement/oozing.  But don't get me wrong, I can't sculpt, so I laud the attempt.  Keep 'em coming.  I'm looking forward to it.

No wonder my ears were burning - the little tinker!!

Will be starting a new one of the Formless Spawn........ need to work on the soldering-fu first though,
the force is weak in me at the moment - but plenty of solder to practice with!!

LOL,

Nah mate it'll be nice to see what you come up with, as hive bases are a must.

It's very nicely sculpted, I can see that you have both skill and talent, but I don't think you've nailed a "formless spawn" here.  It looks more like coral to me - it's too symmetrical to seem "formless", and the two halves each look too flat.

The level of detail, especially given the large size of the sculpt, is impressive!  But I think I'd be more likely to paint it as some sort of alien tree or fungus formation (Red Mars, perhaps...?) than as a Mythos beastie.

Just my opinion, no offense intended.

Oddly enough in the week between posting the pics and reading this - I've turned the pieces onto their sides and am
bulking out the undersides to use as coral for my 4A Miniatures Sea Demons!!

I'm feeling more cut out for scenery sculpting than figure sculpting, so think I'll focus on that and keep [racticing figures slowly
but surely...... will post up some photos once the coral is finished and the sea demons installed - no offense taken either - feedback is all good   8)

I like the gribbly-scribblies too... but yes, it's got the 2D form of a folded piece of paper.  If this were my work, I'd try adding some more limbs at other angles, and maybe slap some drippy-looking blobs on it to give a melted candle look.  Some of those added limbs and blobs can be smaller, as if growing or stretching out of the main form... and the gribbly-scribblies should deform to follow that stretching out.  That should help the description towards the formlessness it should have.  I'd be avoiding the protoplasmic shuggoth look like the plague... and that's probably what I like about those gribblies.  I'd probably finish off assembling the figure by adding some wildly wiry hairs to any bumpy spheroid bits to avoid the eyeball look too... kind of like a hairy mole or wart.  It would be easy to make some of those circular areas look like plantar warts with raised centres - a malignant skin condition working its way out of the patterning of the scribblings. That'd be gross to me. Add on an out of control cancer feel via sculpt or paint and I'm creeped.  Make me worry it's contagious.  :D

I like to think though formless its movement would somewhat be similar to that of a 4D Julia set                http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uozb2AYrYGo&feature=related

ROFL... reminds me of some of my idle childhood chewing gum play.  Hmmm... bet any school janitor has quite a collection.
