Hi All,
Well, it’s been about a year since I launched Hinterland with the original Princess, the Firing Line and the Unit Builder. I really had no intention of going any further, but it seems that once you start building your own little world, it’s hard to stop. So to celebrate Hinterland’s 1-year birthday, I have new releases. Many of these ideas were based on your opinions, expressed in this thread:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=21472.0
First up is Princess Viktoria-Luise, finally mounted:
Everyone was clamoring for mounted figures, and I eventually reached the conclusion that I couldn’t avoid them, and this is sort of a “test” release. The horse is licensed from eBob, while the saddlery and figure are Paul Hicks’ usual quality. It’s hard to see what’s going on around the mane, but she’s holding the bridle in one hand while drawing her sword with the other. I can’t wait to paint this mini.
Next up is Princess Cecilie:
I had really never intended to make this figure. While Princess Viktoria looks badass in her hussar uniform, I always thought Cecilie looked goofy. Nevertheless, you guys demanded her, and here she is. I revised her a little, with her Pickelhaube sitting lower and the addition of a holster, to make her look more imposing. As Plynkes stated in the thread referenced above, now Viktoria has someone to discuss girlie stuff with.
Many contributors to my thread suggested trench raiders, and I had long been thinking about how to do them. I just couldn’t get around the idea of skirts not working in trenches though. With the advent of Cecilie in her new uniform, I decided that I could spin her off into her own little unit of Trench Raiders:
Yup, they’re vicious and armed to the teeth. The image doesn’t show their back, but Paul did a great job sculpting their braids, and they come equipped with all that cool pulpy weaponry.
Finally, and I know this will make some of you cringe, but Pappa Midnight’s zombie thread sort of piqued my interest in zombies, something I’d not been interested in previously. On a whim, I sent off some dollies and hats to Curtis Fell, of Ramshackle Games, and he whipped me up some zombies:
These are a lot better than they look in the pic, but you’ll have to wait until Round 2 or 3 of the upcoming LPL to get a better look at them. I don’t expect to sell a lot of these, but they appeal to my whimsical side.
So please, go buy yourself some Hinterland stuff. You know a woman in uniform is hard to resist. :):
http://hinterlandminiatures.weebly.com/storecart.html
The next round of releases will consist of a cavalry pack of three horsewomen and horses (and yes, I’ll be willing to sell the riders without the horses). I’ll also have something of a surprise release coming, although I’ll probably preview it soon just to get some advice from you. Additionally, I’ve been talking to Ian Armstrong about making a suitable VSF’y conveyance for my ladies. I hope he can set aside some time to get started soon.
About prices: When I started Hinterland I did a fair amount of research about army-based miniatures prices. I am proud that the cost of my minis is at or below the average price for Paul Hicks sculpts (and my S&H charge is a bargain if you’re ordering more than two packs). However, that average has been sneaking up, as has the price of minis in general. You all know the reason why; metal prices. Although Hinterland has only been around for a year, my casting costs have already gone up twice. Long story short; I’m gonna have to increase my prices. I’m not sure when, however. Hopefully if I provide lots of warning, you’ll be more understanding when the price rise comes.
That’s all for now. Hey, do me a favor and spread the word, okay?

Flippin' heck Jason! They are great :-* Ordering right now 8)
Edit; Ordered :D
-
Again, some beautiful figures. Perfect choice to use Mr Hicks and Mr EBob!
I love Princess Cecilie. I think she looks great. She''s easily my favourite of all your figures - not at all goofy and I could see a whole army of similar Germanic females being very popular. The trench-raiders are too "modern" for me, but again I bet they will be gorgeous when painted up. Same for the zombies, not my thing but a great idea.
I'm wondering if I could fit Cecilie into my Darkest Africa set-up somehow :D
-
They're brilliant!
The "look" of the figures is well and truly nailed.
Well done to you and Mr. Hicks.
-
Second order placed,
-
Ah, Cecilie was the figure I was waiting for. I was begining to think you weren't going to make her. She's beautifully painted, too.
Just kind of wish you had kept the two Princess character figures without guns, for folks who aren't interested in all that VSF Prussian Amazons stuff. The only reason I haven't painted Viktoria is because she is going for her gun like Johnny Ringo, and I can't figure out a way to make it look like she ain't. A minor gripe, but we all love to gripe, don't we.
-
:-*
Holy Macaroni!
The mounted Princess Viktoria-Luise is fantastic! What a wonderful figure!
Also really like Princess Cecilie. Any chance of her getting some skirted troops as well?
-
Great looking minis! :-*
-
Looks good, I will deffinately be ordering the mounted princess soon.
The girls in pickelhaube looks sweet too, but I also find the trenchers a bit too modern and I can't really see a use for Cecilie at the moment, but who knows.
I won't be ordering the zombies, while I think they look good I don't really like the idea, but it might grow on me or they might be usefull at a later point.
Anyway, great looking models once again.
-
Beautiful Paul Hicks sculpts as usual Jason, :D.
Mounted Princess and Cecilie ordered.
I'm sure I'll be placing an order for the rest soon too, lol.
Great to see the pickelhaube girls (quick question, do they have the different bases as in the photo?), and more stuff to look forward too as well.
Keep it up!
-
Almost forgot, love the dynamic side saddle pose on the Princess by the way.
And the EBob horse is fantastic too.
-
Yeah, I was thinking that the side saddle would never work for a fighting model, but this is awesome!
-
I suppose all you have to do is add watch gears to the WW1 weapons and/or connect them to a brass backpack and they become perfectly appropriate Steampunk weapons at least, if not VSF.

Good idea - worth looking into :D

Oh, I shall be. I envision a new specialist squadron for my Defenders of the Martian Hinterland.
-
Princess Cecilie is a beauty, great update on the line, thumbs up, Mancha!
-
Thanks for all the positive feedback, guys. I’m actually a trifle surprised with the enthusiasm for Cecilie; I guess I owe you all my thanks for your insistence that I make her. To respond to some questions and points:
Regarding “too-modern” Trench Raiders: Yeah, I thought that might be a problem. I’ve been trying to design these miniatures so as to fit into the late 1800s right into WWI. The raiders obviously aren’t as versatile as the previous hussars (which is why I’ll probably limit myself to the one pack). When I designed them I saw them as sort of a “pulpy” offshoot. And while I think trench raiders necessarily need to be wearing pants, do you all think I should keep all future releases in skirts?
Plynkes: I always saw Princess Viktoria as posing with her hand resting on her holster, as opposed to drawing. ;) My suspicion is I need the gun holsters though. These minis are intended to appeal to “army” builders. I just don’t think they’d have sufficient appeal to single-mini buyers.
Ray: I had intended the Trench Raiders to be a stand-alone set. However, if sales surprise me, perhaps I’ll make some Pickelhaube troops in skirts. The next release will include another new-uniform pack (or two), so it will be a while before I revisit the Pickelhaube. I have been thinking, on the other hand, that the Pickelhaube might be a good hat-choice for zeppelin troops. What do you think?
Elprez: The Trench Raiders and Cecilie have the usual small integral bases, as seen on the zombies and previous Hinterland releases. Thanks for asking. And responding to your other comment, I LOVE that particular horse. I had this picture in my mind of what mounted Viktoria would look like, including her horse, and, lo and behold, eBob had the exact horse pose I was thinking of. Joy!
Thanks again for all the positive feedback.

Jason, I love these models. The mounted Viktoria is beautifully done, and the others are great. I may not be purchasing the Zombies, but I applaud the idea

I agree, I've always seen the fig as resting her hand on her holster
-
Love the new princessess! Another vote for a unit for Cecilie to command.
You list the mounted figs among the "next round" of releases. Are we talking weeks or months here?
-Tommy
-
I wouldn't mind a skirted pack of pikelhaubettes, using Cecile as a model.
-
You list the mounted figs among the "next round" of releases. Are we talking weeks or months here?
Months - sorry. :( Paul has the horses and dollies but, to my knowledge, hasn't started work on them yet.
-
Well, the new Princess Viktoria pushed me over the edge and I've just put in my first order ;D
This is a beautifly posed figure. Whats needed now is the bugler she is obviously instructing to blow 'Draw Sabres'. Regardless, I look forward to seeing what you come up with next.
Matakakea.
-
Months - sorry. :( Paul has the horses and dollies but, to my knowledge, hasn't started work on them yet.
No worries. That will give me time to save up my pennies. I've been holding off ordering, waiting for the mounted figs, and will need the whole collection now!
Whats needed now is the bugler she is obviously instructing to blow 'Draw Sabres'.
Ooh, yes! Put me down for one of those as well! Mounted and dismounted, please! :D
-
Can I add my vote to the requests for a bugler, and a skirted pickelhaube pack please?
All in yours and Paul's good time, of course.
And the more I look at the photo of the Princess, the more I am certain that Mr Hicks has sculpted her expression to match that of the horse, which somehow seems so...right, lol.
Happy Birthday Hinterland.
-
Very nice figs. Quite fancy painting the new Princesses.
-
Very cool models Mancha! Keep up the great work.
-

Blimey, you're right. How'd I miss that?! :o
-
Yeah, I was thinking that the side saddle would never work for a fighting model, but this is awesome!
Never saw that she was on a side saddle! Thanks for the reaction ;)
Ps: there's a small error in the description of the zombies on your site: "l though I'm totally not into zombies, nevertheless, inspired by some amazing threads at the Lead Adentiure Forum and a sense of wacky adventure, I succum ..."
Greets,
-
I'm starting to feel a bit of draw myself, but, while I agree about long skirts in the trench, I prefer them, and would simply refer to them as 'dress' uniforms... :D

Ah, thanks for the heads-up. I think I would have preferred a PM though. :( ;)
-
I've started a new thread related to the planning of the upcoming cavalry pack:

Your input is appreciated.

Oh my!!!! I see a combined chairface/sterling moose order incoming sometime soon. :D
-
…When I designed them I saw them as sort of a “pulpy” offshoot. And while I think trench raiders necessarily need to be wearing pants, do you all think I should keep all future releases in skirts?...
Pulpy is good.
I like pulp, just not in my orange juice.
Yes, keep to skirts, even in pickelhaubs or trench raiding.
…These minis are intended to appeal to “army” builders. I just don’t think they’d have sufficient appeal to single-mini buyers…
I’m a skirmish/RPG gamer who buys mainly single minis and these appeal to me.
Though I will use them in onesess and twoseess to hunt dinos or eldrich monsters with.
…the Pickelhaube might be a good hat-choice for zeppelin troops. What do you think?...
Definitely!
Also, please excuse my ignorance, but what is the wooden thing that good princess is holding behind her back?
...
Next up is Princess Cecilie:
I really do love these and will use them to tempt my daughters into mini gaming!
Thanks

They appeal to me. ::)
-
Also, please excuse my ignorance, but what is the wooden thing that good princess is holding behind her back?
If I recall, it was supposed to be a riding crop, but somewhere along the line it turned into something more like a swagger stick.
-
They appeal to me. ::)
And, indeed, the character releases are supposed to appeal to single-mini buyers and painters, which is what I consider myself. However, I don't think single-mini buyers would be purchasing enough minis to justify the selling of them.

Swagger sticks are cool.

Fair enough.

I'm in love with Princess Cecilie :-*
Very nice model, Jason, and a lovely paintjob.
-
Order placed!
Are you thinking of doing any more trench raiders or are you sticking to ust this group?
Looking forward to reading what is planned next :)
-
Are you thinking of doing any more trench raiders or are you sticking to ust this group?
Probably just this group, although, as I said, there may be more Pickelhaube, skirted troops in the future. But I'm always willing to consider new plans. ;)
-
:-*
Holy Macaroni!

Also really like Princess Cecilie.
Have to agree stunning figures, will definitely pick these two up ;D

Fore sure! Perhaps we can tempt James as well?
-
Really stylish figures :-* :-*
Side saddle is great.

Not so sure if a metal spiked helmet is such a good idea in a delicate balloon :D

Good point, but if I'd felt constrained by reality, these minis wouldn't exist at all. ;D
-
Pretty sure you are EVIL. That's it - all I am going to say about that. Busted my monthly miniature budget in about 5 minutes.
I like the trench raiders, and there is a fair amount of variety in them already (granted, I would not not buy more if you offered them).
Cecilie though - she is perfect. The face itself is much better than that of Viktoria (my only real complaint is that she looks a bit more like Jay Leno's daughter than the pictures of the Princess).
One question (bit late since the order has been placed already) - but how is the mounted Princess broken down in terms of parts? Ordered a few extras and am trying to figure out how to break it down and mix them up with the previous releases to create a body guard for her.

The horse is one part; the figure another part.
And thanks for your order.
-
Marvelous line of minis.
I'm in a completely dry period hobby-wise atm (haven't touched a mini or brush for almost 3 months), but it's nice to follow the release of new toys, anyway. :)
-
Cracking additions Jason! :-* This is a fantastic and unique collection that just gets better.
-
Hi Jason!
You should have just received my order for the two Princesses.
Have to say once again that the mounted Princess is absolutely beautiful. The miniature itself is awesome, as is the horse and the furniture. This is a classic miniature.
Cecilie, in her own way, is an awesome miniature. She can be used for so many different settings she is a must buy.
After these latest releases, I am hoping for a mounted Cecilie to go riding with Lousie and some foot miniatures with rifles in dresses to accompany Cecilie on foot.
Cheers,
Ray
-
Stunning mate, absolutely stunning. I was going to buy some Orks when I get paid, but now I'll be grabbing Cecile and some of those trench raiders.
-
Excellent additions to the range. Order placed. Keep up the good work.
-
I have worked out why I like Cecilie so much...
Reminds me of my own dear wife (as pictured in a stage role - a good few years ago!)
:D
-
I am glad your wife wasnt dressed like that when we last met ;)
Splendid Picklehaube by the way. :)

Ray: I was anticipating that I would need a mounted Cecilie, but I wasn't anticipating that so many people would want skirted troops to accompany her. :o
Richard: Maybe your wife will be the model for my, um, offshoot erotic line. ;D
-
Nice figures.
Really don't like the zombie line, but will order the other figures immediately
-
Richard: Maybe your wife will be the model for my, um, offshoot erotic line. ;D
Such as "Lady Godiva" ... :o
-
Received mine yesterday. One week from the US to the UK, thanks Jason, :)
Princess Viktoria-Luise mounted, Princess Cecilie and the command pack.
What can I say? Lovely, lovely figures.
Paul Hicks sculpting is great on all the figures, but the mounted princess on the (Ebob) horse is something else, and wonderfully posed.
Glad you cracked and decided to produce Princess Cecilie as well, and cant wait for more pickelhaube figures.
As you can probably tell, I really like this range, :D.
-
I recently came across these fantastic miniatures on Tabletop Gaming News and ordered some immediately.
Now, as far as arming the future mounted hussars, I think a combination carbine/lance might be pretty cool. I also like the idea of arming them with C-96 Mauser pistols and the artillery model Luger w/ snail drum magazine.
It might be prudent to keeps the hussars with their sabres and maybe somewhere down the road release some lady lancers.
I also hope the mounted hussars will have sabretaches and pelisses.
-

This.
-
.... my, um, offshoot erotic line.
You mean the minis of hussar/picklehaub babes were not meant to be erotic? ;)
Well they work for me.
But you might want to check out these two Winsome Warriors books;
http://www.amazon.com/Winsome-Warriors-Alwyn-Coates/dp/1859150608/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1300302653&sr=8-1-spell (http://www.amazon.com/Winsome-Warriors-Alwyn-Coates/dp/1859150608/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1300302653&sr=8-1-spell)

A whole lot of military uniform wearing babe inspiration there.
-
How about doing a Lili Von Schtupp figure? She always does the trick for me when I watch Blazing Saddles. The thought of a mini of her in a Pickelhaube....... :-* lol
-
You could also check out the you tube videos of Hot babes of the Isreali army or girls of the Isreali Army.

My second parcel of Hinterland figures arrived today
I ordered separately to avoid the ridiculous UK VAT/import duty, which they just seem to make up, and do-able as Hinterland's shipping is only $5 to the UK.
Received the Skirmishers Pack and Maxim Crew
Just wanted to say the figures and service are great, as usual, and the skirmishers are even more dynamic than they appear in the photo. Very useful additions.
Now to see if I can get these all painted up before the cavalry are released, lol
-
.....do-able as Hinterland's shipping is only $5 to the UK.
That's excellent! For example, I've been trying to buy some Oakland Raiders stuff from the US and shipping for t-shirts, baseball caps and other lightweight items is far more than that. Anywhere from $12.00 up for a cap >:(
Well done Hinterland - an order will go in sometime soon!
-

I'll second that. There is a picture of them painted up on my Web site, www.bucksurdu.com. Click the GASLIGHT link.
-
just noticed this thread...what a great idea!
-
yes, a nice lady in Uhlan uniform and czapka would be an interesting addition.

(sorry they are Russian not Prussian !)
-
I love those Russian Princess pictures, and I've always been an admirer of the Czapska. The problem, as I see it (and I invite your comments), is that miniatures of them would be very much like the Hussars I have now. As I consider additions to the Hinterland line, I am looking for troop alternatives that are different, as opposed to small variations in uniform. As such, I did the Trench Raiders in pants, and I'm looking forward to the sailors. What I like about these two new uniforms is that they can serve different functions from the Hussars. I just couldn't see the Hussars as close-combat specialists, so I invented the Trench Raiders. The sailors, although they'll begin the same way the Hussars did, with a firing line and an officer, may end up with a gatling on a carriage, and as signallers. The Hussars will end up being mounted, becoming the cavalry wing. I like the idea of Hinterland supplying troop specialists from different units and in different uniforms, each with different roles within the larger force. I'm seriously considering a troop variant like Cecilie, in her skirt and Pickelhaub. These would become dedicated infantry and artillery.
So back to the Russian Princess; because I already have a cavalry unit (albeit, not quite yet mounted ::)), an Uhlan unit would be redundant. That said, maybe I'll do a pack or two for fun at some point in the future. The Czapska really is hard to resist.
-

This gets my vote for next priority (after the mounted figs, of course)! Don't forget that the artillery pickelhaube is different than the infantry one.

I don't think Uhlans would be redundant at all. Your line is built around the conceit of a pretty girl in a cool uniform. The more different uniforms, the better! It also opens up the possibility of pitting them against each other in separate armies!
-

whether uhlans are redundant or not, it would make a wonderful character figure
-

Yes, indeedy!
I'd buy them both and better yet, each in a dismounted and mounted version. :)
-
I'd buy them both and better yet, each in a dismounted and mounted version. :)
Well, I think I'd have to insist that the one on the left is already among my Hussars. The one on the right, however...

Now your talking!!
-
Would be great with some more characters and officers in a pack :)
-
Well, I think I'd have to insist that the one on the left is already among my Hussars. The one on the right, however...
Indeed.
However there is a difference in the hat |(what its name?)
but ypu may release a set of uniformed princesses (or girls) as characters. I always fancied a nice looking scot highlander lass
In general there is a lack of czapka hatted miniatures for Victorian (or VSF) era
-
Sorry, I forgot to add another idea.
An interesting addition would also be a set of nurses. (historically many of the queens and princesses served as nurses in all the armies of the world)
and a small contribution:
Empress Alexandra in lancer uniform:

on this one she looks even better

Given the success of the original Princess Viktoria mini and the more recent Princess Cecilie mini, I'll probably be doing more princess character figures.
-
can't wait to see the mounted cavalry

I can't either. :(

Great news!
I'd also be interested in female Valkyries from different countries. I'm sure there are lots of females in smart military 'dress' who would love to be immortalized in lead and bless VSF and Pulp gaming tables around the world.
