Hi All,
Again, I’m asking for advice about upcoming Hinterland releases. My plan for each round of releases is to try to aim for one pack of the original hussars, one character figure, and one pack of something new, albeit related. As many of you know, the next round of releases will include hussar cavalry, thus taking the pack-of-hussars slot. A character figure might be Cecilie mounted, although I’m not sure. And here I’m providing a very rare preview, so you can determine what will be filling the pack-of-something-else slot:

Have you figured it out? Yup, sailors, in the classic Schutztruppe mold. What I’m wondering is, how far should I go with this theme? I intend to make at least one pack of sailors, and at least one officer. However, beyond that, I see certain options:
1) One pack, consisting of one officer and four firing and loading sailors.
2) One officer by herself; and a pack of five mixed firing and loading sailors.
3) One officer by herself; a pack of five different loading and preparing sailors; and a unit builder pack of six firing sailors, in the same pose. (This would basically mimic my initial hussar release, by the way.)
4) One officer by herself; a pack of five different loading and firing sailors; and a unit builder pack of at-attention (rifles by their sides, with the butts on the ground) sailors, in the same pose.
Your input and vote is very much appreciated.
Mancha/Jason
PS – What kind of sailor hat do you like?
-
Love the idea of these as have been looking for some lady sailors for a miniatures version of the Full Light Full Steam RPG, though the ladies in that setting do wear trousers to avoid any potential embarrassment in zero gravity!

Ladies that would not look too out of place alongside the Copplestone British sailors from his Darkest Africa range would be ideal.

like the idea, gave my vote at the poll.
-
Like the idea lots, and like the WIP so far. Lady sailors would be a definite purchase for me.
Just my two pence, but I would have absolutely no use for at-attention figures whatsoever, so I've voted for option 3 above.
Thinking of the Copplestone figures, straw hats would seem to be appropriate for the ladies, but that might limit them to use in warmer climes?
-
Alternative heads? Straw boaters and fur caps?

At this scale and as these will probably be used - more poses, the better.
Voted #3.

Mostly used in games deployed or shipboard (naval ship or land ship) or "in atmosphere" Aerial ship I suspect, never seen a VSF game in Space although I am sure it happens all the time. I just assumed the skirt edges would be weighted in the hem to reduce "overflow" movement.

The rounded hat was almost universal and could be used by most countries.
I'll take a unit (option 3), thank you. ;)

Cracking idea! Optioon 3 for me. Would love to see them on one of my nefs.

Bummer! ;)

OK, I voted for the last option but here is my suggestion:
One officer, why only one officer? Usually a ship's crew needs more officers i.e. one standing, one with binoculars or telescope one giving orders etc.
At attention sailors: usually are without rifles on deck -for ceremonial purposes, but I suggest 2 packs with mixed poses like:
.- loading and firing guns/MG etc
.- one delivering messages,
.- one semaphore
.- one at attention for ceremonial purposes
.- a couple of poses, firing rifles (landing parties - repelling boarders)
.- one NCO with whistle (whistling orders/salutes)
.- one sitting (might be used as navigator sitting by the charts table or used as wireless operator)
some of the above might be combined to form an officers pack as above
-
Mixed pack of poses would work for me. As for zero G and skirts I'm sure the tends of the day had some garments weighted at the hem with lead weights.Perhaps the leggings could be more Zouave in shape?
-
I like Argsilversons idea of semaphore, NCO with whistle, second officer etc. Adds a bit of character to a force.
How about a command pack similar to the Hussars' one as an additional release if sales of the initial basic packs justify it?

Good idea...

But a straw hat would make them so much more Anne of Green Gables. :) I'd pick them up if they had sennet hats, they match my existing navy figs, but I can see why the traditional hat would appeal to others.
-
Thanks for all your feedback. I'm impressed to see that Option 3 is winning by a landslide.
Regarding hats: Like the round hat, the straw one was kind of universal too, but I agree that it might make them look less martial and more like picnickers on the rampage. I'm leaning toward the round hat pictured in the Copplestone image earlier in the thread. I'm afraid there won't be multiple heads though.
Regarding additional officers: If these sell well, I would certainly consider a larger command pack, just as the original hussars started as an officer and two rifle packs, and became an army.

Might be just me - but I have always liked the felt hats worn in many of the African regions:
http://www.militaryheadgear.com/items/9804
http://einestages.spiegel.de/static/entry/als_telegrafenbauer_in_deutsch_suedwest/1573/kamelreitereinheit_der_schutztruppe.html?o=position-ASCENDING&s=15&r=1&a=256&c=1
The round caps are more sailor like - but I have always envisioned them as remaining closer to the ships...less used for land wars and more for securing the ship in ports and dealing with ship to ship and ship to land conflicts. I would have use for both - I just don't know how many of the sailor's I would actually need as opposed to the land based Schutztruppe. Just a thought though.
-
For German sailors, the land-based tropical headgear of choice was a pith helmet, pretty similar to the Victorian British pattern:

I know this isn't supposed to be historical, but I thought I'd throw that in there as they do look pretty cool.

Some more gratuitous examples (just because I really like the pics):

Plynkes: Those are great pictures. I'm definately saving them. You've given me something new to think about.

The "book covers" sub-folder in the "Africa" folder on my hard drive has a 142 of these covers in it. I love them.
Just one more, because a man being hit over the head with a drum never stops being funny:

I voted for #3 but I would actually prefer a pack of skirmishers/advancing troops instead of firering (og at ease) troops also I would really suggest to either make the command figure a whole pack with NCO, musician and standard bearer or add a command pack too.
Butwhatever will happen I look forward to see the results of minis :)
-
Re Pith helmets, I wouldn't mind seeing a unit of pith-helmeted ladies, but in addition to the sailor-ladies, maybe at some point in the future?
Depends how far you want to go with this, :D
-
I voted for #3 but I would actually prefer a pack of skirmishers/advancing troops instead of firering .....(
I think I would also prefer the figures to be skirmishing rather than firing and the unit builder pack to be "standing ready"
-
Looks like some lovely stuff coming Jason, ordering soon...everything! I must admit I prefer unit builders to be either advancing or at ready.
Plynkes are those covers on line somehwere? I just get a load of German Ships and footballers when I googled it and strangely Darth Vader.
Laflin I would like to see her in miniature too, Im going to show my ignorance....who is she?

Jenny Seagrove from the movie, Nate and Hayes or if you're not a USA'n, Savage Islands. Was the first thing that popped to mind when I saw "Hinterland Sailors."
-
Actually...
I must agree that I would rather they be produced like the Hussars with the firing pack as the unit builder.
Generally, I prefer my minis to be advancing/skirmishing... as they do on the table. :D
-
mine tend to go the other way....
-
I voted too but could really use some gun crew figures both for field gun and machine gun. I need crews for my VSF Walkers. Perhaps a figure firing a maxim (hands together) or a crank fired MG such as a Nordenfeldt/Gatling. A figure directing fire, with binos or a spyglass.
-
Sorry Mors, I had a look for the link in my favourites but couldn't find it.

So would I. I have one of Copplestone's Nordenfelts but no crew. This would be perfect.

In that case - can we get an option for them to be dropping their kit and fleeing in terror?

Remember too though, while it is important to see stuff that would be really neat...it is also important that Jason makes a huge pile of money too (or at least doesn't loose too much ;) ). Most people will buy many more of the unit builder types than they will buy of the weapon crew types (though with sailors...it might be a bit different).
-
I love your theme an I especially would suggest sailor hat with ribbons.
Love your work,
Helen

I second Helen's idea!

Lovely! I would like one (or two), too. {Forget the jokes, I mean in 28mm scale, since in 1:1 scale, if I would suggest anything my other half would ....)
And finally I would prefer the normal sailor hat (what's its name)
Fotr those loving the pith helmet I would remind you some earlier post of me with some images of helmeted ladies pith-lemets or spiked helmets.

and for slouch hat lovers: what about them?

One can dream. :` I'd also very much like to see some opponents for our Teutonic Amazons. Maybe some ladies in zouave pants, greatcoats and kepis like out of an illustration by Albert Robida.
As for the sailors, I'd like to see them in the traditional sailor hats with ribbons. It would make them very versatile. You could use them for any nation, for colonial or European service, on ship or off. On the other hand, pith helmets would make them extra unique miniatures and would look great.
-
I agree with Laflin and Rand. I'd like to see the sailors in a round hat with ribbons, worn, perhaps, with a sailor blouse and bloomers - the height of ladies' athletic fashion around the turn of the century.
-
I thiink the French sailor hat with the pompom on top would make them just that much more feminine.
-
I've pretty much decided on the universal round sailor hat with ribbons. However, the officers will have Pith helmets. A pom-pom would be an easy enough addition, but you'll have to do it yourself with green stuff. :)
-
You must be better with green stuff than I am!
Oh, THAT kind of pom-pom...
-
That's a great picture, Tommy. I'm keeping it. I assume it's that enlarged naval maxim?
-
don't know if I might be coming too late to the polling party, here is my 50 cts
there are a lot of sailors around
I like the Perry and Copplestone naval brigades for the sculpting, but not for the postures.
On the other hand, I do like the Pulp sailors for their variety and character, but they are not in uniform.
The Brigade Games merchant sailors are something inbetween, but the sculpts are a bit unispred.
I would strongly opt for 1 pack of Officers/NCO, 1 Pack of sailors with rifles in different postures (but not shooting, sailors are not for firing lines) and 1 pack of sailors in postures without weapons.
preferrably exchangable heads and additional weapons as well as some MG, pompons and other deck guns
I would think that this version covers the most with the least effort/costs

That's the one. I pulled the image from Wikipedia.

By the way, I picked up a bunch of your figures at Little Wars. I had been waiting for the mounted pack, but when I saw them sitting there, the little hussies just kept saying "take me home"!

I'm glad. :) It's always nice not to have to pay postage (although I like to think my postage is pretty darn cheap).
-
Whatever poses you decide to do I can see them now, defending the Legation against the attacks of the Dowager Empress, or rescuing Nellie Bly from the clutches of the Pirate Queen and the lovely but wayward crew of the Siren (orphans every one)...
How about one figure mopping the deck?
-
BTW...
What kinda hat are you planning for the officer ???

You'll find the perfect companions for your pompom wearing Hinterland sailors in Renaud's new post on the Colonial board.
Cherchez les femmes.

I'm looking forward to getting the sailors. I skipped purchasing the last release because I hadn't painted up my former Hinterland acquisitions and decided to punish myself. I need to get cracking so I can justify getting them :)

I agree; don't let Hinterland become part of your lead mountain. :)
