Title: Street Corner project (Project finished!)
Post by: Evilcartoonist on 10 March 2011, 04:52:29 PM
After finishing my tramp steamer crew, I have embarked on finishing my self-named "Street Corner" project (started last month). I'm calling it "Street Corner" because I'm building just enough terrain and painting just enough figures to fit on a street corner. (The steamer crew and some of my copplestone boxers ((seen below)) are spin-offs of this project.) I just finished the swell dolls last night.

The terrain here is all scratch-built. All the figures are Copplestone.

When I was a boy way back in the 50s, T.V. was a showcase for all the great movies of the 30s. Your FINE WORK brings all those moments glued in front of the set watching Jimmy Cagney, John Garfield, & a host of other actors & actresses back to life in miniature. INSPIRING STUFF!

Great photos, miniatures and scenery - I especially like the newsstand! Did you scrounge the pulp covers, newspapers and such off the web and print them at the right size?

The flappers are great too. I need to get more civilian ladies for my pulp games, have lots of gents but not enough ladies...

Yet more gorgeousness. Do stop it  ;)
I still haven't recovered from your handmade caveman tents and mammoth skellies, and that was about 2 years ago.
You are a talented and inspiring fellow EC  :)

Great painting.  Your flesh especially reminds me of Michi's work, which I also very much admire.

Less cartoony than Michi to be honest, which add's to the realism. Lovely minis, lovely scenery and great scene, looking forward to more.

A couple more pics. I painted some of these fighters up a couple years ago for playing Friday Night Fights (Two Hour Wargames), and added a few more when I heard 2HW was working on a pulp fighting game (Smokers. Think Sailor Steve Costigan.) And again, these are all Copplestone.

You never cease to AMAZE me!  :o :o

Your painting style AND talent makes those minis pieces of art (and make us lesser mortals blush).

And the scenery pieces are top too.

But... Any chances the B&W project (the newsstand was originally made for that iirc), can have some more work?

Or is it an abandoned project?

I remember visiting your blog and DROOOOOOLING with those B&W masterpieces.

Thanks a lot.

I consider my black and white project finished. My original intent for it was to provide miniatures for a roleplaying game. It was a great game (using the Savage Worlds system); the minis, battlemat, dice and cards -- everything on the table -- was black and white. Ever since, I've wanted to get back and paint the same set of figures in color.

Though, just because I say the project is finished doesn't mean I won't go back and add more later.
Since you brought up that project (which is still near and dear to my heart), here are a few pics from my blog (old and new pics):

I HAVE seen that board- holy smokes, that was some great stuff. Makes my stuff look like someone flung babyfood on the wall. That guy took it to the next level for sure.

For those who haven't seen this board we're talking about, you can see it at Cool Minis or Not here: http://www.coolminiornot.com/218520

Thanks for allowing us lesser mortals the oportunity to rejoice with your B&W minis and accesories.

Now THAT is something I have wanted to do for a looong time, but I may just try that for a diorama and not a complete gaming table.

Thanks again and best wishes.

I'm just gonna keep posting gangsters here as I finish them. Here are all my civilians (except one). The bottom figure is Dapper Dan; apparently, he was a convention/show exclusive that sneaked into my last order.
Nothing new to paint now until my next order arrives.

Lovely stuff EvilC.  :D I've got these figures all sat in a box to paint up at some point too.

Shame Mr.C hasn't done any more figures to go with this range. Some G-men would've been great.

Would love to get my hands on one of those Dapper Dan figs.

How do you get the pictures to turn out with such depth and color? Your sets really display your painting skill in a fantastic manner. Very impressive work.

How do you get the pictures to turn out with such depth and color?

Short answer: I use Photoshop to tweak contrast a little bit.

Longer answer: I'm using an old Canon Powershot A460 with macro and a tripod. The camera has very few manual settings, so I had to experiment. I find that setting the figures about 8" away from the lens gives me the best results. I set one lamp pointing at the front of the minis, and one lamp almost directly above the figures (to simulate "sunlight.") I use the camera's automatic white balance setting (and no flash).

The background is simply some heavy dark brown fabric.

Beautiful minis, Evilcartoonist - really enjoying this project. In the last photo, with the three tommygunners, what are the two cars? I'm guessing they're Lledo or Matchbox Days Gone By, but they look nicely thirties, and I've been having trouble finding sedans in the right scale for my own twenties/thirties project. These look perfect, so if you could spill the beans on them, I'd appreciate it. Most of what I have are the Model T looking cars - a bit boxy and square. They're fine, but I'd like a few more "modern" looking cars too!
Oh, those dames look great too - lovely rich colours, and great bases on all the minis.
Looking forward to more!

what are the two cars?

I bought these at Walmart on clearance a few years ago. All I can remember is that they were WWII German Staff cars. The only identifying marks on them (underneath) is "NM Toys" and "Made in PRC." I wish I had bought more- they were only about $3 when I got them.

Looking forward to more!

Nice! Noonan in particular has tons of character - great work on the face and hair. As always, the bases are great - do you sculpt them? I choose the lazy option, and got the cobblestone and concrete bases from Dragonforge. Really nice sculpts, and of course it saves time. Mind you, if I could create bases like yours, I'd take that route every time!

Thanks for the link, EC - I'll give it a try. I suppose one of the advantages is that you can use the tab on the mini to attach it to the base, and then sculpt the cobbles/flagstones around it, rather than pinning a foot to the base, as I do at the moment. Great project - as always, looking forward to seeing what's coming next.

So that's it? Project finished? Won't you get bored if you're not working on it - maybe a building or two (or ten)...?
On a more serious note, though - any plans for what's next?
