inspired by Tom Weiss his "A Cowboy a Day" http://www.twfigurines.de/oldwest/copplestone_cowboys/page01.htm , I'm going to make an-Africa-mini-a-day-thing :) would be cool to keep it up until end of the year, so I would get painted 90 Africa figs. Wish me luck 8)
the first one, a bearer
(http://www.witchhunter.net/images/darkest_africa/africa_bearer_01.jpg)

Go for it!
I visit Toms side nearly every day to check for the next Cowboy.
Will be nice to have africa minis too.
Good luck!!
-
Can you paint a whole figure from no paint and no base right through to finished all in the same day, Prof?
I'm sure I can't. Well maybe if it were just the one figure, and I didn't paint anything else. And I had the day off work. And there was nothing good on the telly...
Good luck!
I shall try and emulate you in my own small way, and do one a week. Or maybe one a month, if that doesn't work out.

yes, that's actually my usual way to paint

would be great, we need more Africa here :)

I tend to paint batches of eight or ten of the same sort in one go, and have three such different batches all in progress at the same time. They seem to take ages and ages, and then suddenly you have ten finished, and the next day another ten.
It is very satisfiying, but you get long gaps with no satisfaction in between.
-
How about I'll show a picture of one KAR, German Askaris or something similar from my WW1 collection
Good luck Alex, Its brillant what you are trying to facilitate on the forum 8)
-
Looks really nice. I'm trying to just ramp myself up to one mini a day. :)

Same for me I have 8 Soviets for Afghanistan, 6 Mujahideen and now 8 Geezers on the go
-
I've been painting Musketeer Saxons, 4 at a go, and they've been painting up rather quickly. These 24/30-man units however... :x

Hi Poly, I found like you that painting 10 Asien Korps in one go and in one day wasn't too bad 8) . I know in time, plus practice I'll get quicker. I acknowledge, that most folk work, have families plus other commitments and so makes it difficult in no uncertain terms.

eight or ten would be too much to me, so the steps like faces, clothes etc. would take too much time and kill my motivation. 5-6 minis in one go is my upper limit. But only from time to time and not every day. "A day a mini" is just my thing, so I'm able to get my satisfaction every day and that's very helpful. Try it, you won't regret it :)
-
Thanks Helen and lads for your kind comments!

A miniature per day is not so difficult, IMO. Under the right circumstances. I did 20 merchant sailors in a week to fairly good standards if I may say so. On the other hand my ME marketplace (25 minis) is on its 5th month which is less than record breaking.
To me it is all about being inspired.

Hi Alex
Just refer back to my African collections on the WW1 & WW2 forum each day and you will have your fill of Africa
-
Blimey, I feel so inadequate  I think the most I can manage is one a week and thats if I am lucky! I have never been able to master the ten at a time or small batches. I start off with all good intention and then always end up focusing on one figure.
I guess thats why I like skirmish gaming as most of the figures are different and each one is an individual personality. So I can concentrate on one at a time. I do have a huge Prussian army for the FPW waiting to be done and I have only managed 10 Infantrymen and one Jaeger in three years!
-

It depends what I'm working on. If I'm doing a load of Orcs, British in khaki or African Natives, I do them in batches of 10, as I can use a limited pallette of colours & get them done fairly quickly.
If it's main characters or colourful "exotic" types like pirates, I do them in ones or twos because of the larger range of colours involved.
Either way, I still couldn't get close to one [well painted] mini a day :(
Cheers,
Ian

I totally know what you mean. That happens to me. But unless I'm painting individuals I like to try and do a whole unit at a time, otherwise there tend to be annoying lapses in uniformity. And I need the "big push" to get them done. Otherwise my interest would wander to something else, and I would have hundreds of unfinished units.
"A day a mini" is just my thing, so I'm able to get my satisfaction every day and that's very helpful. Try it, you won't regret it :)
Well, I do have a lot of characters and individuals to get through. Maybe I'll give it a go, though I'm sure I don't put in enough painting hours a day to keep to that schedule. May try something similar, though, but with a slightly looser time-frame. Might be a good method for when I start my planned Gloire project, as none of the figures for that are from units with matching uniforms.
Right now on the painting desk I have:
Two elephants,
My third Mark IV British tank (nearly finished),
Some more Schutztruppe Askaris and their officers,
Some East Africa characters,
A Victorian muzzle-loading screw-gun that I've converted into a breechloader for Great War use,
Some ragged Darkest Africa Askaris,
A Doctor Who UNIT mortar team,
A half-finished Tintin that I got bored with,
A few Lord of the Rings figures I got bored with,
Some poo counters (don't ask!).
Several of these will get some attention each time I go to the bench. Perhaps this is why I don't get the satisfaction of finishing things that often. I think I need to narrow my focus and stop trying to do so much at once.
:D

:D
That actually helps always. Ask Zoogla, he had the same problem until he had given up trying to make troups and switched to individual minis and started painting a mini every day. Immediately his outcome has increased. And that feeling is great, you know that each time you're going to paint you will get something finished, not first in two weeks but now, 2-3 hours later. How said, just give it a try. :)

Not for much longer, I think I have shot my bolt with this weeks performance :(

I do batches of 5 I find that by the time I've done one coat on all 5 the first mini is ready for the next.
I do all the faces & hands then the uniform / body then the weapons then the belts boots etc...
Can't seem to do all base colour then second then third etc.. like I've seen some do.
Couldn't do one mini per day no time with work & family.
My chinese back of beyond 62ish minis took me 8 months and i'mon varnishing now. Bit too long really...
-
By the way prof your miniatures are awwwwwwwwesome
-
Ok Professor - next one you paint, you MUST take in progress shots so we mere mortals can "unlearn what we have learned...."
PS Having painted these same miniatures myself, can I just say, in the style of Yosemite Sam "I hate you........."

Wow, is it the one from Bob Murch??
It's so well painted, that it's difficult to be recognized.
I had to compare it bit for bit.
Very good!

Yes the figures and pictures are`` Hammer`` !!!

I used to go out with a girl who looked like that. She didn't have a spear, though she did have a riding crop.

Liane, Jungle Goddess
Good Lord, you actually remember that one?!? ;)
Sweet little mini, btw.
-
Hey Plynkes I had no idea you liked girls with boxer noses. hehe
( The paintjob is great )
-
Well the figure does put me in mind of her, though the real nose wasn't quite like that. Anyway, I tended to spend more time looking at other parts of her rather than the nose.
-

no idea, ask Grimm, it's his work :)
Good Lord, you actually remember that one?!?
Indeed, I do :) and I've got it, too :) though actually bad one but always love that cover

Great stuff. I enjoy seeing the new ones every day. :)

Not only is it well painted but also well dramatized.
-
Wow, that's a great idea! I always try to do a unit, and then they never get done and I have 10 half-painted figs sitting around. I tend to jump from one genre to another when days go by and I have nothing to show for hours of painting. But if I did one a day (or maybe 2 if they're quick paint-jobs for a unit), I would actually be able to feel a sense of completion every day.
I'm very inspired to try this out. And the photos of Prof's figures make me even more inspired. Great work!

Yes, the Prof has done a great job in all areas - painting, basing, terrain, picture composition, lighting & photography. Truly inspirational stuff!
I would love to see a photo spread in WI, like Nick's London :)
cheers,

thanks, lads :)

Terrain is made by Grimm, who is really the true artist in making high grass and dense jungle :)
-
Awesome as always. I don't know how you do it. :) :)
I've still only indercoated and whited eyes since last week.
:( :(
-
... and I can't spell either that should be undercoated...
-
I'm rather fond of the latest hunter, who looks like he should be named Jeroen van Koep or something equally Boer. I know it's mostly khakis, but they're well done. Though I do like the blue stripes on the latest bearer almost as well.

Only joking! Grimm's terrain is superb - truly a marriage made in heaven

Right. Sure. I won't forget that "crispbrad" remark, though. I am sure it is derogatory slur of some obscure Teutonic sort. ;-)

I did not know you were such a romantic, Professor. It is sweet how that black lady is blowing a kiss towards that nice old man.
-
Well, Crispbread is good slang for Scandinavians. We should continue to use it. After all there is a rich tradition of us Europeans insulting each other about what we eat.
Brits call French Frogs after frogs' legs.
French call English Rosbifs (roast-beefs).
Americans call Germans (sauer)Krauts.
French (and British) call Germans Les Boches, which comes from a French dialect word for cabbage.
So Crispbreads is a great new one for the grim Nordic ones! I vote yes!

*The Assassin in Clogs puts the name of Plynkes, Duke of Quickmee, in his Black Book of Slights.*

Always wanted to say that one once. Sorry.
Ahhh, the lush erotics of the colonies. Excellent painting. I really like the skin tones, and those final very light highlights. But those clothes are even better, especially the ones with strong contrast (particularly the quarreling wife´s).
-
You've got to show us some more photos of the terrain!! The vegitation and village terrain looks amazing up close! How about some wide shots??
Greg

Sorry Prof . I diden´t like the final very light highlights it is to hard . :?

Great, great paint work, Prof!

Love your painting style professor. :D

that's some interesting flesh tones :)
-
These are Foundry colours, right? Perhaps I should use them, too - no more mixing/searching for highlight colours...
Btw, how many layers this fleshtone consists of?
Very nice pieces of work and an apparently effective way to fasten up the painting. I'll try that, too. :)
-
I think the spear and shiled guy is my favorite so far for a number of reasons. For one it's a great paint job especially the shield and for another the mini has a great feal from an anthropological standpoint. He's got one foot in the colonial world and one foot in the tribal world.
-

I can see I'm going to have to improve my skills before I can hope to post pictures here! That Gorilla is pretty neat! I have a fistful of Foundry Darkest Africa and Some Pulp Figs, but have so many projects I'm starting to run out of backburners to keep them all going. But when I do get going, I tend to work on figs in batches of 5 or 6. I've taken The Pledge on TMP to try to control my buying habits, but so far have not been very successful.
-
Love the shield design. So much better than my monotonous brown versions :(

I really like the scars on that tribesman!

The umbrella doesn't come with that set, Grimm. I think mine came with a rebel askari leader riding on an ox, or something like that.

there are two minis with umbrella, that riding one and a tribesman standing and holding an umbrella
-
From the expressions on thier faces, they don't seem to be enjoying thier vacation in Africa

What! Now you're doing two a day?
I really _do_ feel totally inadequate now :(
I use the standing umbrella bearer as a kind of sacred standard for my not-Azande [painted in the glorious blue & white stripes of the mighy West Bromwich Albion]
I'd like the mounted one, if anyone has any spare?
cheers,

Alex is incapable of the emotion "boredom." Instead he feels slight fluctuations in the Teutonic Efficiency--tremblings of the Dark Side. He meditates for a moment, and draws the Light Side around him like a cloak, then resumes painting again.

Agneta Fältskog. She lives in London and is unstable. The other one, Annefrid Lyngstad is close friends with the Royal house. She's had cosmetic surgery done to her to the point where, if she laughs, the skin on the top of her head will split open. I thought you'd like to know.
Prof's is my favourite Advent Calendar ever!
Dito.

6 weeks! And I bet you don't have even half your DA collection painted

Just thought it's time to dig out my old Africa thread. My digital camera and Africa terrain are in Germany, so at the moment only mobile telephone pics from my desk. Some grass will be put to the bases too.
No promise to post every day, just from time to time :)

Oh wow - this thread pre-dated my arrival on LAF, so it's all new for me, and all spectacular!

Your mobile phone takes better pics than I've ever managed with my 10 megapixel digital camera! :(

it's my new phone, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, quite happy with it, 3,2 megapixel and quite nice macro
-
Great minis!
I especially like the civilians and animals, they add so much atmosphere.
Glad to see the thread revived!
Keep'em coming, Prof!
-
fascinating work schedule...
I know it is possible to paint one a day but one needs some painting space or a home office with all the drying/brush cleaning etc time inbetween the actual painting or simply a break to readjust the eyes or relax the back and hands...
I shall certainly try this when I start painting again - maybe a railway coach a day ;)
-
Wow ! What a great expressive face has this gorilla !
Glad you're back on painting, Prof.
meow,
matt

Brilliant Prof! Love the hair on that donkey...
(And quite useful for a nativity scene as well, given the time of year ;))

Was it really two years ago that you last posted to this thread ??? :o
Good to see it's back though - it was always the highlight of my day when a new figure was posted :D

I recognise those Monolith pots! Beautifully decorated...

Perfect - I want some :D

Didn't want to start a new thread so I've picked up this older one to place some of the cleared backlog, Slave Caravan. The scene was done for the last LPL, and the figures were waiting for some close-ups since then. I also wanted to use the opportunity and to make photos of other older Africa stuff, I've used in this picture, scattered through the various forums and blogs and never photographed properly.

The absolutely beautiful work you have done on your African figures was one of the key inspirations that drove me to put together my African adventure. Thank you. I never get tired of looking at these figures. Richard

-
Stunning work and that first picture is just amazing!
:-* :-*
(Not that is anything wrong with the other pictures, they are all great but the composition of the first is top class....).
-
Lovely painting, Alex! :-*
-
Great to see these. Grimm's jungle scenery are still some of my most favourite ever pieces from the LAF. :-*
-
I have just been back through the entire thread as it's first two incarnations are from before I signed up.
Absolutely stunning brushwork through the ages ( ;)).
:-* :-*
Really glad that you revived it, as everyone should have the pleasure of seeing this for the first time (and a second and third time for a lucky few).
:)
-
That is some seriously impressive painting and the figures placed in some fantastic terrain, giving the whole thing a life of its own. Brilliant. :o :o :
-
Those are great, the colours really 'pop'
-
Fantastic painting, with very vivid colors, and a beautiful scenery. Your trees, sir, stand out like very few other pieces of scenery. Are you by any chance using bonsais?
-
Top drawer Prof. :o :D
-
Lovely neat and clean painting (of which I am a big fan) :-*
-
Great photos.
Love the figures. :-*
-
Effing hell, Alex... Those are wonderful.

Sumptuous :-*

Great way to start my Monday :-* :-* Thanks Prof. Lovely fabrics but I think my favorite detail is the string of beads on the one lady with the head-loaded pot :-*

Really happy to have contributed some inspiration, Richard, thanks :)
Great to see these. Grimm's jungle scenery are still some of my most favourite ever pieces from the LAF. :-*
Absolutely, he's still THE genius when it comes to making jungle :)

Thank you, Malto! Like mentioned, the terrain was made by Grimm not by me. And yes, as far as I know he was using bonsais for some of them.

Some weeks ago, the guys from the Studio Tomahawk (http://www.studio-tomahawk.com/gb_index.php) asked me for some Africa scenery pictures for their coming rule set Congo (http://blog.studio-tomahawk.com/2015/03/congo_31.html), so of course I was happy to be of help and also to have the opportunity to make finally some proper photos of my Africa collection. Today two first set-ups..
First of all a classical African Village, some huts, some pots, some witchcraft..
The second scenery should depict a classical European adventuring party, struggling through the jungles of Congo. Of course I had to take one of all-time my favorit figures, the Allain Quartermaine, made by Mark Copplestone. The older members of LAF should particularly remember this one :)

That's for today, more next time. The drums are just telling me of a Savage King and his witches..
-
Nice! (and very inspirational ;D).
Now I have two reasons to await the new rules; rules and pretty pictures.
DJ

Lovely pictures. Studio T can be happy.

Absolutely stunning! Fantastic setup and photography! :-* :o

Absolutely beautiful, especially the terrain.
Did you make or purchase the huts for the village?
-
Outstanding photos.
Really love them. :-*
-
Beautiful! So glad to hear some progress is being made on Congo as I've been eagerly awaiting the game. Of course if they are only now asking for photos printing must be a long way off...
-
Thanks for sharing this Prof! Just a joy to see :-* :-* :-*
Lon
-

Cheers, guys, appreciate your kind comments :-*
Did you make or purchase the huts for the village?
They've been made by a LAF member Turbo-Ben, I've bought them from him, just PM him if you're interested.
-
Probably buy the rules just for the pictures, stunning.

Gorgeous Alex. Studio Tomahawk are very lucky to have your artworks to make their rulebook look so good!
-
Just wow!! :o The figures are amazing, the terrain is great, and your photography skills are top notch!
-
Thank you very much, guys, happy you like the pictures that much :)
-
Amazing doesn't even begin to describe your work! :o
-
Amazing work! :o
-
The first scene is re-creation of one of my older LPL entries, I guess even the first season of the LPL. The miniature of the king is from Reaper Miniatures and made by Bob Olley, astonishing piece of amazing sculpting work. As far as I know I never posted the pictures of him outside of that one LPL round. So today, many years later, here we go again, with the Savage King, his retinue and some bold adventurers meeting him.
Next one is a piece never properly presented as far as I know, the Askari cannon. Painted on a business travel, in a far away country, where I had to work for a while and my only compensation for that were the random painting hours. Very characterful miniatures!

When are you going to produce a coffee table book with pics of your models, Prof?
This, honestly, is a brilliant idea 8)

Simply spectacular, just hope the quality of rules can equal the pics of your stuff. I know I'm a minority but I can't take to Musket and Tomahawks at all.
-
You're not alone Phil :)
Mind, I've played Saga once and quite liked it- I got slaughtered! :D
Darrell.

I remember seeing the savage king years ago.
Still a great set piece. Love to see it again.
Excellent cannon and crew.
Thanks for sharing.

Cheers, guys, appreciate your kind comments :-*
One day, John :)
You really should - I'd buy it!
-
So would I, beautiful stuff as always Prof :-*

That is truly inspired. It captures the dark continent in escapist and exotic glory. Looks like a film set in miniature. I think I may need to start yet another project.
