Title: Max table "depth"?
Post by: Wraith on 23 March 2011, 01:43:11 PM
I have been mulling over buying a ping pong table for a gaming table. The standard seems to be 5' X 9'
I am a tall fellow, so reaching to the middle of a 5' table doesnt seem too bad for me. Plus, it folds up for storage!

Anyone else use a pong table?

I used to use half a PP table for wargaming, and it worked quite well.

I have a hexagon shaped table; from side to side it's about 6'; it's just about as wide as it can be & still be able to move thingies about in the center...dead center is where all the action occurs.

I am not tall and find a six foot wide table is about as wide as I want without having to overreach.  I have a ping pong table as well (5'x9') and just knocked up a frame to go on top that I use to deploy my 6x12  table.  I also just built a collapsible 4x4 table to take away with me when I go Western Skirmish gaming.

I use a Table Tennis Table - 5' is easily comfortable for reaching the middle:

No, but the gaming club here has used 2' wide tables for years, even pushed them together to make 6' wide, and they work fine.

4' by 4' as part of 6' by 4', some of them ar even combinable.

I build mine out of Styrodur (not sure of the english name for oit, its kind of some styrofoam) which i can buy at my local hanystore in plates of 2' by 4'.

I#ll might post a video of my latest adition.

I have used ping-pong tables at 5' X 9' for years. I am not very tall, only about 5'6", and have never had any problems reaching the middle of the table.

We used to game quite a bit on tables of 6ft x 12ft (~2m x 4m), but this would force players to walk around to the enemy side of the table as troops or ships or airplanes went across the center line.  One of my friends still sets up a 6ft x 8ft table in that space, but it is more cramped now that there is a bar with beer taps on one side.  It's still a reach to the other side of the table.

A 5ft x 9ft table would be really great. We would not have to walk around the table quite so much, or take so many chances at straining our backs.  I may try to get my brother to give up his ping pong table at some point, because the kids don't use it anymore.
