I decided to build a french village for my WW2 games. I wanted to be able to set up streets like these ones
(http://perso.orange.fr/midgard/ww2/tmp/frenchhouses5.jpg)
I looked first at products from existing manufacturers but I didn't find anything really interesting except the Carentan range from Grand Manner (but far too expensive as I want 6-8 buildings.
Finally, I began to build them from scratch in foam card. After 3 weeks of work , I assembled 10 buildings ( houses, barn, shops, garage).
I textured them yesterday with the Walktapus Magic Mixture ( water and ceramic tile glue ) and they look great.

Next step now, the painting!

Whoahh! What a project.
Cool start!
Hopefully you have the stamina to finish it!
-
god :o that's a lot of bildings...
-
Looks really promising!
-
Gotta love huge projects.
-
I love them too. When other people do them. :)
Looks great. Can't wait to see the finished versions.
-
Now that's what I like to see
Looking forward to seeing them painted!
-
That looks great...just like the real thing 8)
-
Many Thanks!
Now I have to do something great! I hope I would begin to paint them soon.

Quite right.
-
I like the look of these a lot.
I'd like to make not only a WWII French village but also some Victorian British stuff, which is essentially similar in shape, although not in detailing.
What have you done for texturing the roofs and walls? It's fear of putting tiles and brickwork on 10-20 houses that keeps me from starting?
-
For the roof, I finally used Wills products, textured plastic cards that I bought from Antenocity's workshop.
For the walls, there's no stone or brick walls yet only rendering ones that are textured with a mix of water and ceramic tile glue.
Walktapus used it for his bricks buildings and it's very nice :

Great work, Olivier! It really does have that French village look!
-
Here are the first buildings painted : a farmhouse and a barn.

Olivier
-
Very nice! Are the roofs tile in real life? And do all the barns have windows on the second storey?
-
There are a lot of different types of roof even in the same region, so mixing brown-red and grey tiles is rather realistic.
There's no real rules for the windows, just a kinf of artist's view...

Awesome looking stuff, please lots more photos, especially the finished town :D
-
Fantastic buildings, very inspiring indeed.
Nothing says 'French' building to me more than having shutters for the windows so I think you need a couple of shutters here and there and a Cinzano sign as well

2nd batch of buildings nearly finished

That's looking really good! You must write up a "how to' as I'm sure lots of members will be interested to give it a try. 8)
-
Is the road made form Underlay? you know the material which acts as a cushion beneath carpets? great idea :)
-
The paved road is a textured foam sheet from Antenocity's workshop.
I uploaded a quick tutorial along with drawings

Hi Olivier, Nice work on the buildings :)
I like the town photo of looking down the street with the two different blue background colours picturing a costal township in my view. Really is quite lovely 8)
-
Great stuff, I like the curtains on the windows as well. :)
-
Great stuff, I like the curtains on the windows as well. :)
Snap - wouldd be in terested to know how you did them...
-
They are just a printed picture glued on plastic card. It came from an old shop I took with my camera several years ago and that I used for designing shop textures.
I also used it for my paper buildings...

Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once....Excellent!
Very clever use of real photos of real buildings. The windows/curtains look particularly effective.
-
:o
Simply beautiful.
-
Congratulations!

It's really coming together well. Looks very realistic.
Fantastic.
Can you publish a step by step guide for us unimaginative types

Wonderful work! I like the way you have populated the town, too.
-
* Get the plans http://perso.orange.fr/midgard/ww2/psh_diybuildings.htm
* Draw the 4 sides of the building on a 5mm thick foamcard including windows and doors.
* Cut the sides from the foam card, remove the windows and doors.
* Prepare the assembly and drill some holes in order to insert pieces of tooth pick into them. They will consolidate the corners. I also put some tape.
* Adjust the 2 roof 's sides to match the building. Cut the side near the chimney. Assemble the roof with a tape then glue two 90° triangles on the underside.
* Draw the floor on a 5mm foamcard, cut it and glue it.
* Glue some cardboard stripes ( 5mm x 25mm ) and glue them above and under the windows. Use a 30mm long stripe above the doors.
* Mix water and ceramic tiles glue to obtain a textured paint. Paint all the building's sides including the chimney (but not the roof).
* Let it dry at least a night.
* You can start the painting of the building.

Wow those look excellent - reminds me of my drive through Normandy.

Olivier
-
Thanks !!!
-
Gosh :o :o I missed this thread..great figures-and outstanding village!!!
-
Fantastic! You have inspired me to do the same (some day...)
BTW - what do you plan to use for the village/town church?
-
Dom,
frankly, I don't know yet. My first project was very similar to the one that Grimm built.
I have technical requirements with 4 13cm long roof sheets, I can have a tower of 8cmx8cm, so the remaining roof length is about 18cm.
I can put the tower on the far end, or in the middle. I don't know if I should texture the walls with plaster or with stone or both.
Olivier
-
The churches in Normandy are more like English ones (grey stone in the Norman style, surprisingly enough!), they aren't really like the one that Grimm built for me, that's supposed to be a church for the Alsace/Lorraine area of eastern France (or western Germany, depending on the year).
-
There are so many different styles and periods that it's a bit difficult to have a generic one.
I must confess that if I can use it for Dark Ages games, it would be fine too so a roman / norman church would be interesting.
A very inspiring page

-
Very nice link!
Do you think the Hovels 15mm European Church would be alright, or is it a bit small?
-
Yeah, a mind-boggling array of different church styles in France. When I googled "Alsace church" I got several different types, so I sent all the pictures to Grimm and told him to just use them as inspiration and do whatever he liked. I was happy with the results. Oddly enough, what he came up with looks just like Rommel's sketch of the church in Bleid, which is what I wanted it for. A very happy coincidence!
I like the Romanesque ones myself, but they'd probably be a right pain to scratchbuild. Like this one in Perigueux, a place where I went on holiday:
Fancy building that in 28mm? I don't! :)
-

I don't know. I checked the Hovels 25mm one with Artizan or BAM figures and it is really small.

I built this romanesque bell tower a coupe of years back after plans by Alan Harrison. I won't say it was a quick build but it wasn't too bad.
I am very much into Roman and Romanesque buildings and I would in some other life like to build me and the wife a profane Cisterciensian monestry complete with galleries, wells and herb garden.
-
Cool. Got any pics of it?
-
Oh, bollocks! That was the whole point with my post, wasn't it?
It's for 28mm figs BTW, although you can't tell from the pic. I had to back away a bit from it since it is about 60 cm tall.
-
Whoa, it's really impressive!
-
Blimey, that is tall! Have you had the chance to use it in a game yet? If so, what kind of game was it?
-

One with snipers! You can't use that without having snipers in it!
Lovely stuff, Hammershield. 8) 8) 8)
-

Yes, unneccessarely tall. But it looks good on the table and comes apart i three sections so storage is not a problem.

No, I have not. I moved back to Sweden before I had time to use it with my then gaming group. It was specificaly built for a LotR scenario but I did so hoping to use it for other purposes like for my Florentine renaissance assassins (Medici et all) and night watch . It may work for Romans to.
It has a certain Italian*) feel to it so I am not sure it would work for France or Germany.
Edit: *) Campanile Yes, that the word I was looking for.
-
Were I a sniper, I would position myself anywhere but in the campanile.
It's the first place everyone would look (and start shooting at).
-
There are a coule of other houses which go with hte campanila:

Ummm, preferably with something having a large calibre. This place is an education :)
The other buildings: Very nice, Hammershield - so the campanile would be around 3x the height of the other buildings, then?
-
Yes, roughly.
-
:o :o very good hammershield
-
Sgt Perry - how did you do your windows and doors? I have some ready-made windows and doors for 20mm models, but is it possible to get ready made ones for 25/28mm?
-
Really nice buildings

Yep, we have it at our club (the ruined one, and its more suited to 20mm :(

I wouldnt worry, look at these london churches they have a lot of similarities

Would this pass for a Normandy village church? It's a gothic terrain piece from Fantascene:
-
It does look kind of Norman to me. I'd like it more if it had a bigger tower, but I don't think it would look glaringly out of place, and that circular window is very nice.
Grey stone churches like that do seem to be the most common type in Normandy, as in England.

Here are some pics of churches from my recent visit to Normandy:

The Fantascene Church is pretty close to the one at Crepon (where CSM Stan Hollis won his VC). The Carentan Church is beyond my scratch-building abilities!!
