Saw this at TGN today and followed the LINK (http://monstersinthesky.com/2011/03/30/hml-leviathan-test-shot-miniature-photos/) to the photos.
Here is one:
That thing is 13cm (5.25 inches) long and 4cm (1.55 inches) wide. :o :-* :-* o_o
Folks seem to be freeking out about the fact that the models will receive some form of light pre-painting.
I just don't see it as an issue. I've bought pre-painted (AT-43) minis before and had absolutely no problems repainting them.
These guys are certainly taking their time getting this game out. But I think the result is going to be an absolutely awesome product.
Can't wait for release to get my hands on the game and the 8 ships included.
-
Still, it's pretty!
-
From what I can tell from the blog, though the designer doesn't know when the game will be ready for sale, I get the sense he is shooting for this summer.
I'm sure it will cost a pretty penny but I'm almost certain to jump on these the minute they are available.
-
Yeah, I got snapped at when I implied 'vapor ware'. lol
I'd just said I'd not seen any notices for quite awhile, but will admit I wasn't wedded to the blog, following post by post.
I'd seen transparent masters, but not resultant production. Thanks for the update!
And yes, pre-painted is no problem; a plus for those of us with multiple thumb syndrome.
Doug
-
Yeah, I got snapped at when I implied 'vapor ware'.
Thought passed my mind as well.
Could be a number of factors we are unaware of, or just might be the guy wants to put out a great product.
-
The ships do look prettier, but definitly more `handling practical` the the dystopian wars range. Nothing against Spartan, but the space and vsf `uncharted seas` games are just to big modelwise for a decent fleet battle imho, especcially mounted on flight stands (bump to table, timmmbeeeerrrrrrr)
-
wow. i love it! :)
such a pity that it is really much different from other lines around...
-
I've been looking at one of their screensavers for nearly 2 years (or is it longer?) now, every time I start up my computer. So, about time they get their stuff sorted out. Lovely, worth the wait, but just one remark (look at the pic): if the model would be "in line" at the bottom, it could be used as a surface ship as well. I guess very few people will cut the tail just for this purpose. Really something they might have considered imho.
Rudi
-
I quite like it, as Bezzo said, it could do with being bigger to allow resonable sized smaller ships on the table, let's face it, you probably wouldn't field a fleet of twenty of these (hmmm, actually, you probably would lol ).
Right! Who's making a 28mm scale one ???
cheers
James
-
I've been waiting so long for these. from first sight of the illustrations, now years ago.
I had a similar reaction about Distopian Wars, Tomsche.. nice looking stuff from Spartan, but my heart's been set on the Leviathans for a long time, and I prefer their design.
As for scale, I'm glad they won't get bigger than just under 6 inches. I'd have actually prefered a bit smaller even, but with casting in plastic and some very small parts, it might have suffered from losing detail. Spartan stuff is nice, but the models are just too big for my taste, especially some of the Spaceships- really do hope they will come out with their fleet action scale minis.
Anyway- these look great, and I'll be sure to get some. I could even see getting some to convert to starships a'la Star Blazers,
-
Remember only the Battleships are 5 inches long. The destroyers are 2.5. What I especially like about the minis are the width, which altogether allows lots of detail. So I think with a reasonable table there will be plenty of room to maneuver... and though I'm totally shooting in the dark here, I doubt that they will be mounted a foot high.
:)
-
Right! Who's making a 28mm scale one ???
Umm, I'll just finish the SS Procrastinator first! :D
-
well, when I'll manage to build my 28mm neff all will say the idea is stolen....
-
very funny
I only have a basic idea yet
cutting uo a 1/72 85 cm flower class corvette and filling inbetween
so, since I won't start with the details as long as I don't have agood idea, it'll take time as usual
hopefully these new beauties will provide some inspiration
I read the background story and found it instantly appealing
does it say anywhere if they will be plastic kits or resin casts?
-
I bought a mistreated kit for 10€ from ebay
the only thing unharmed is the main body and a few details
the rest is wrecked
-
The models will be plastic and the game will include, for both the British and French fleets, 1 Leviathan, 1 light cruiser and 2 destroyers; for 8 total models.
-
sounds very good
full casts I undrstand?
-
Right! Who's making a 28mm scale one ???
cheers
James
Not quite a battleship, but I made a gunboat a few years back. Does that count?... lol

That is awesome Rudi.
You should post it in the "Aeroneffs, Flyers, and all things airbourne" sticky thread!

That's ugly and brutal, but in a very beautiful way lol
Another masterpiece of making gold from junk. I love it!
-
thx, guys. Actually, it was easy to make and so would a larger one be.
1. Go to the toy shop (best time = spring, summer)
2. check out the Super Soaker section
3. pick one you fancy
4. saw off the handgrip
5. turn it upside down and have a good look at it
6. put aside for a while
7. repeat steps 5 & 6 a couple of times lol
8. plunder your bitbox and keep some plastic card, strip, washers, the lot (you know ;) ) at hand
9. Action!: "camouflage" the area where the grip was attached (I mounted the open bridge there)
10. build, build, build.... (I left the pump mechanism as it was, it enables the tail to be lengthened and the fins to turn around their axis)
11. when finished (or so you think...) repeat step 7 again a couple of times...
12. Prime the model (you never know about plastics & acrylics...)
13. Sit back, lit up a cigar and pour yourself a single malt (that's what I do: I really do HATE this hobby, but it's a good excuse to get o_o)
14. Post it on LAF...
Easy, not?
Have a go at it...

Rudi, easy for you and easy for me are two very different things... lol
You're right, though. Funnily enough, my son has some old water guns that mysterously seem to have broken during the winter..... ;)

Geudens, please, do make a post with the images and your step-by-step in the sticky. It deserves a place there immortal!
*ahem* Long time, that is.

Here is another photo of the first production prototype on a makeshift stand:
So it would appear that the basing isn't going to be terribly high.
Bunch more (and far better) photos at the link I posted at the beginning of the thread.
-
I must admit I am liking the look of these, hope it doesn't end up costing the earth when it comes out
-
so it is some kind of kit after all
-
Well, the master is in pieces but it will come pre-assembled.
Perhaps after launch they will consider selling the unassembled kits.

"Pre-assembled & lightly painted" is the usual excuse for high pricing...

True enough.
This is going to be a complete game in a box. So you will have rules, miniatures, cards and map included. I think it is aimed at a mass market, and thus not particularly suited to the needs or desires of gamers who love to fiddle about with minis and have vast choices of different packs.
The price? Who knows?
Nevertheless, I like the concept and will buy the game. Even knowing that there is a distinct possibility, that if it doesn't get enough interest, it might be their first and only release.
-
I marginally qualify as a retailer, not a producer, but my impression is these things tend to get made up in a run, boxed and ready to sell on site. True, you'd have masters and moulds left, but unless the game did very well, any further production would be unlikely for the small quantities for thee and me.
True, assuming this will be available via distributors, I shall not be able to resist.
Now, has anyone actually played this? The rules have been available forever at none-to-dear for download. I've yet to see a review. If you know of one, please do post a link.
Edit-before-post: Dopey moi, first place I should have looked was BGG. Next, I'll try a search of LAF.

Very, very nice ! :) :o
-
loving them even more!
of course ,only if unpainted! :(
-
I do like these. The French ship is especially nice as it echoes the French 'tumblehome' ship designs of the late 19th century.
I do hope the ships are released separately from the game.
-
I nearly purchased some Dystopian stuff today but these are much more like what I have in mind. If they are made available I will go with these and if not I shall cry :'(

Me too! I'd like to use them to play the new GASLIGHT airship rules.

Me too! I'd like to use them to play the new GASLIGHT airship rules.
I'm guessing that the rules won't add THAT much to the cost of the box, so I'll probably pick them up for the same excuse.
Mind you, while I've been resisting play Dystopian, I might consider proxying these in as well. When my partners *aren't* looking, of course. ;->=

Appears they have the minis ready and are doing a last quality control check on the sprue's.
Here is a pic of the sprue's:
Almost all comments on the blog are begging for sale of the sprue's themselves. :)
-
Looks like pre-order of the box set, 64 bucks, is now available:
http://www.thewarstore.com/CatalystGameLabsLeviathans.html
Appears release is almost upon us. :)
-
These fulfil my idea of what an aeronef should look like!
The "pre-dreadnaughts on stands" style are okay but I have always felt looked a bit contrived. I have always thought there should be more substance to the hulls. More space for all the gubbins needed to make an armoured flying battleship fly. These are the business.
Trouble with all that sticky out stuff to make it fly is that first high explosive shell that comes along and the whole thing becomes a hole in the ground :D
Real world warships keep as much of their vitals hidden as possible for very good reasons.
I have to admit that they look cool but at 65 USD (pre-order discount price) + shipping to UK and import taxes they are a bit expensive :(
Has anyone any idea what's in the fleet boxes please?
-
and any idea about the price of the unpainted unassembled sprue (if available) ?
-
Well...
No info on sprues or fleet boxes that I can find.
My impression is that first they will publish the boxed game. And then they will follow-on with boxed sets (with four ships I presume) of the "main players." I think they intend to have 6 or 8 countries represented but I don't remember the specifics off-hand.
For the sprues, the info is very wishy washy. They may offer the sprues is basically what I read.
Overall, as with any game system I believe all the other stuff will depend heavily on how the basic game sells.
So if it tanks... forget about sprues or fleet boxes.

The weird people or the ships? :?
lol lol
I tend to agree. They do look very tempting in the pics, but I'd like to hold one - or at least see pics of them painted to a high standard.
The cost will probably deter me though :(
-

I think they've been waiting for the plastics to get back from tooling etc and maybe because of the initial outlay for getting plastics done there might have been a delay with monies.
The weird people or the ships? :?
lol lol
Ooer, well, I don't really fancy the one's in moustaches...

Ooer, well, I don't really fancy the one's in moustaches...
Admit it, it's the dressing gowns that do it for you isn't it? Or is it the pith helmet ;)
-
The ones with the pink handkerchiefs.... :o
On a more serious side... I noticed some comments which indicated that folks had jumped on Dystopian Wars because of the length of development. Could it be that development was put on the back burner because Dystopian Wars beat them to release and the game was put on hold for awhile to gain some distance between the two games?
-
The cost will probably deter me though :(
The basic box on pre-order, which includes 2 Battleships, 2 Cruisers, and 4 destroyers, plus maps, dice, 2 rule books, unit cards, etc... is $63.99.
Consider the pricing for Dystopian Wars newest battleship in comparison:
DWBS11 Dystopian Wars: Blazing Sun Hachiman class Dreadnought (1) $23.49
Granted the Leviathan's are high impact plastic compared to DW's metal, but in this case, I think the Leviathan game will be VERY competitive price wise, though DW has a clear edge from the sculpting perspective.
-

But only for technique and detail, the actual designs ares pretty awful for the DW ships etc :?
I thought most of the larger DW items were of resin?

Been painting and pondering...
I remember waaaay back when, when Leviathan's was first announced. They struggled a whole lot trying to come up with some basic designs. Then they went quiet for about a year.
Another, but more optimistic, explanation: Once they had figured out how to design the first basic ships they then buried themselves in designing the follow-on fleets for the other six nations in secret. If that is true, after release, we could expect a fairly rapid expansion with the Faction, Fleet and Ship boxes... at much more reasonable prices than the basic game.
;D

Found a couple more photos on the Scrap Yard Armory Blog (http://www.scrapyardarmory.com/2011/08/05/gencon-2011-day-2/) from Gen Con featuring ("fantastic looking" as the blogger put it) painted Leviathan ships:
French Fleet:
British Fleet on far left side:
So the British in Grey and the French in ... silver ??? Looks like repainting will be in order here, but then again, I knew I would repaint them no matter what they looked like.
Of interest are the flight stands in the first photo. Look very nice and sturdy.
-
I love the style! Love the artwork! Love the idea! Now how's going to build a 28mm version?
The colours schemes on the ships could be better. Maybe some sort of camouflage? Have you heard anything of wither the games any good?
-

Dear Santa Claus....
-
Ooooooooo I like the big one :-* 8) :-*
Someone mentioned in the comments that it might be suitable for 6mm but I reckon you could get away with 15's...
Maybe some sort of camouflage?
Dazzle :D
This all does look rather promising :)

Just in case someone who actually cares didn't notice, DW is coming out with a flying battleship, for La Belle France, called the Magenta class. ???
Looks pretty enough...

Note: As this thread ages, you might have to select 'Older Entries'.
Also, I'd call it detailed while not quite rococo... ;->=
I'd say Monsters... waited too long!

Have you heard anything of wither the games any good?
What I've read appears to indicate that the game is quite easy to pickup. Last minute gaming rules centered on the destroyers which were viewed as a bit overpowered.
They have been testing the rules in lots of demonstration games in different "cons", so I'm leaning towards... they have the game sorted out pretty well. Advance rules, such as using varying heights, which will not be available in the box on publication, I'm not so sure about.
-
I'd say Monsters... waited too long!
A distinct possibility. Spartan games have been very aggressive and have a continuous flow of new minis which helps to keep them in the spotlight.
Now they are moving to place themselves directly in competition with large fleet vessels, which look pretty good to me. My feeling is that Spartans stuff will be a lot pricer than Leviathans though.
So perhaps from a VSF POV the real question is going to be... can the two different product lines be mixed on the tabletop?
-
I would personally pick Leviathans over DW because that means I can get into a new game without having to paint or assemble anything. A change of pace for once.
-
My guess is that the Leviathan stuff will be slight in comparison to the chunkyness of the Dystopian models and I cannot see them working too well together. Oddly I am more drawn to the plastic than resin also, something I that would generally be reversed.
-
The dystopian wars french ship is in fact the first model of an entire faction in their second wave. (spartan games tend to have a lot of factions) By the looks of it they will also have a lot of that sort of ship since the French make heavy use of the turn a battleship into a airship type technology. I have to say I am quite intested to see how the two would look side by side, a french leviathan fleet and a dystopian wars one. For me to choice of games is easy, my FLGS is pushing gw to a small corner and replacing it with a variety of other games, dystopian wars included, so I might actually find a player base here for once.
-

Or, even more difficult, find someone to assemble and paint. Have to admit, appealing to me.

GW still rules at our store, but Flames of War and a few of my fellow owners pushing DW hard means we are appropriately trying to diversify. Not pushing WH and WH40K into a corner, but GW can be a evil alien overlord (okay, a bit cruel on a UK company lol ) on occasion.

Heck, it was on the cover of Origins Event book. :o

Edit: Sheesh, less than a year and his beard is almost as long as mine?!?!?
I guess I will be bummed that I went to Origins instead of GenCon, where I could have gotten a model. Would like to have seen one in person, so I'd have something to show my partners at the store in comparison to the DW models. ;->=

I can see me at least risking £25 on a fleet box and possibly the £50 on the core
-
Think I've run out of patience on this one... :?
I did recently see a pretty cool photo of some "alternative Leviathans" by Madan Mitra on TMP (it was slow day ;)):
Neat, eh?
Pretty expensive though, I would imagine. But I do like the concept.

I like them as well 8)
Big, chunky and totally impractical :D

I have continued to keep my eye on this game and they appear to have gone through some amazing production problems with the Chinese.
However...
... it appears launch is close. :o
-
Well, they have a niche to fill that no-one else really has at this time (plastic neffs) so I suppose it might be worth the wait :?
Let's see :)
cheers
James
-
I'm pretty sure I will buy the box set... whenever that becomes possible. ::)
I've also been eyeballing the Dystopian Wars stuff and may attempt to do some moding of the Leviathan nefs with pieces (like the big guns) from DW. Dunno well have to see what they look like and whether that is even possible.
This whole idea of "just take it out of the box and play" just doesn't seem cricket. :D
-
This whole idea of "just take it out of the box and play" just doesn't seem cricket. :D
Frightening new territory, huh? o_o
I had the game on pre-order at The Warstore for seven months last year. I gave up and canceled it though.
-
But, if we can just open the box...
and play...
then what will I cuss about as I putter around with it?
-
I can see me at least risking £25 on a fleet box and possibly the £50 on the core
Well... you can forget that.
Looks like the game will begin retailing in September and official pre-orders are now available.
Price?
$100 for the core and $50 for the fleet boxes. :o
-
$100 is what, about £65? so yes more expensive but to be fair not disastrously so (cannot believe a tight wad like myself just typed that ;D)
-
Personally, because I envision not only painting but also modding the ships, I was hoping the fleet boxes would be a bit cheaper.
Doesn't quite seem to jive that two fleet boxes equals a core box when you think about all the extra stuff (rules, dice, maps, etc) included in the core box.
-
I think it was a couple of years ago I got chided for the suggestion of 'vapor ware' because I hadn't been following the blog. And, yes, I had bought/downloaded several of the books.
It was less that I wasn't hearing anything forever, it was more the big splash in the first place.
Doug
Edit(June 17th):
Doesn't quite seem to jive that two fleet boxes equals a core box when you think about all the extra stuff (rules, dice, maps, etc) included in the core box.
Except, the author/producer, like all artists, probably doesn't want his beauties used with any other rule system. As I said, I was chided, and the lad sounded rather protective. Wouldn't be the first time such feelings derailed business sense...
