I think the weapons look slightly big, but as they appear to be separate, they can be replaced if needs be.  8)

Allthough very very nicely done the recent postings had left me rather cold as they followed the often trod theme for fantasy humans but it has to be said these are absolutely superb, weapon size and all :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Good question WL.  I'd love to see these with pikes.

Just awesome either way.

Beautifully sculpted. They are very reminiscent of similar GW figures, but in terms of quality are far better. Large weapons are often a problem for me with fantasy types - theirs are a bit big but not overly so.

Absolutely fantastic miniatures... I am astonished and completely blown away with the really nice sculpting. I love landsknechte, might not come as a big surprise for some, but this is fantastic. I know there was a higher purpose when I sold my Games Workshop Empire army some time ago, this is the answer!

Beautiful figures all but if I have to make one comment it would be that they are holding the bills at port to high, those things are heavy and are much easier to carry with a straight arm (I'll still be buying them though  :D )

You know I love the idea of crossbows and huge shields (who's correct name I seem to have forgotten) The only problem here is that I am not entirely sure how one would attack them to the model. The walking pose makes in front a bit strange and having them carry the shield on the back would be a shame as they are so well sculpted models.  ;D

They are called a pavise and I agree with you, it's really a shame to hide a big part of such a beautiful miniature. Hopefully the pavises are for some other miniatures perhaps...?

Agreed, but the size looks fine and certainly of a similar scale to the ones I saw displayed at the Royal Armoury in Malta of the same period.

OOooo Neotacha is always very critical of how miniatures of flautists hold their flute - stand by!

I think both musicians look great.
Title: Re: Army...
Post by: Neotacha on April 28, 2011, 11:15:43 PM
Two very minor quibbles on that flute.  First, the flute should be going off to his right, with his left arm crossing over his chest.  His right should be a bit farther down the flute, with a greater gap between.  Or lop off a bit of the body below his right hand, and make it a piccolo.

Although, a quick search does show that yes, there are left-handed flutes, so I suppose it's good, once that left hand moves just a bit down the flute.  Early, key-less flutes would be ambidextrous, I suppose.

http://www.mcgee-flutes.com/LH-flutes.htm

http://www.abcgallery.com/L/leyster/leyster4.html

Thank you for putting his hands in the right position to actually hold and control his flute.  I never understood the people who put both hands pointing toward the shoulder.  Not only would you be apt to drop the thing, but the lower shoulder would be in agony after a fairly short bout of playing.

I will probably have to get the flautist.  And I love the way the pants and boots wrinkle on the back parts of the legs of that drummer!

I do not doubt that there are/were simple, not flamed blades for bihanders
In miniatures there is always the risk that such blade comes out to flat, especially if done without blood groves or midrib.
But it is ok for me, i can try to rasp the (imo only) surplus away.

Hi,
no doubt - that will be the best series of Landsknechts on the market. The guy with the flute is the best for me - so far.

I'm looking forward to buy them as soon as they will be available. They will bring me back to an old and always loved project.

Thank you, thank you, thank you verry very much.

This is not really true. You can trust me, I have done my fair share of marching (and loads of fighting) with this kind of weaponry, and for parade marching or the like, or in a cramped town area this is prefered. It looks good and are also good when trying to avoid hitting people. I have done that, for instance marching in the old town of Stockholm, and the Palace and such.
You would otherwise store them on a cart, or actually holding the metal part and dragging them behind you, to spare your self the weight issue.
Same with two-handed swords, wich in contrary to popular belive is NOT that heavy, I have tried loads of period weapons, copies and training weaponry. They are super fast weapons, and ALLWAYS hit first if fighting a person with a shorter weapon, unlike most gaming systems. This is due to the nature of the weapon, and also the fact that two-handed swords are loooooong, and hence have superior reach.
The only reason for allowing a shorter weapon to hit first, is that you allow the opponent to get within reach (and hence his/her prefered fighting range) so that you can in the last moment move in body to body close, and either flip the greatsword and fight with the quillion and buttspike, or keep it straight and fight with quillion and buttspike. This is a very good way of fighting sword/buckler and such.

Another thing. A single sword in one hand, is by far, and I mean by far, the absolute hardest way of fighting, its almost utter useless against any other kind of weapon combination. Ninja or not.
Title: Re: Army...
Post by: OSHIROmodels on June 02, 2011, 12:26:45 PM
Ooo, interesting  :)

Our regiment quite often 'go on' as engineers so we are outfitted with bills more often than pikes (ECW) and we've never carried them like that. If it's a bit cramped then we trail, as you say, holding on to the bill head. I know it's a slightly different period but I can't see it changing that much.

Although saying that, maybe it was different on the continant. I'll have to ask my regi mate who quite often goes over for Thirty Years Wars doos.

cheers

James

;D ;D ;D WK...its funny because its true!!  I work with a bunch of American War of Independence Reenactors...and let me tell you they could have survived the winter at Valley Forge no sweat!

No, they couldn't, they would have been the first to get eaten.  ;)

@Ratnik, great work on the clothing and armor.
Great miniatures overall, actually.  :)

Post edited due to a missunderstanding, hope no offence was taken.

Well, I must obey to the allmighty and knowledgable then. Pity. I didnt mean to come out as rude or as a besserwisser. But I suppose that was your intention.

I apologise, I did not mean to cause offence or to mock you. In truth, I know nothing of these matters, I am just a poor clown who saw an opening for a cheap joke.  :(

No problem, I have cooled down my self now, and hence I hope that we can move on. Besides, it wasnt you that set me off, besides I think it was more of a language issue than anything else.

Galland, I have sent you a pm on this.

The 'Ooo, interesting' comment was meant as it was said, I find things like this interesting and would like to more from a different re-enactors perspective and certainly no offence or immaturity was intended whatsoever.

cheers

James

Heya James et al.

I must appologize, it came out a bit harsh, hence I have edited my last post and the one before that, so its less rude and agitated.

I will absolutely try to be more comprensive in the future. I would also love to discuss the matters. Especially since I have during very hot summer days marched with the helbard like that, both on our own accord, and along with the Swedish Royal Guard (Svea Livgarde). Our uniforms are made of wool, linnen and silk, and can be damn warm in full attire :S

By the way, whats even more embarresing, I start to see what you mean, about the pictures. Some of them look right, but some have a couple of rather bad angles, it sure would be hard to balance the weapon, they are top heavy like hell.

So the bills that you have are held at high port with the arm tucked in at the chest? (similar to the ACW way of carrying a rifle? ).

In the ECW,when standing we hold our bills at the advance, which is, arm straight down and the bill tight against the side of the body. When marching onto the field they are held resting on the shoulder at about 45 degrees with the bill head about a third of the way up from the shoulder.

If I can find one, I'll dig out a picture of one of our events and post it (if Ratnick doesn't mind  :) ).

I would be interested to know if there was a difference between the continent and England in this  :)

cheers

James
