Hi everyone,
I have just finished painting the first figures of the upcoming NZW range from Empress. They were really a joy to paint (which is not a matter of course in my case as I usually get tangled up in the belt jungle of early 19th century uniforms lol). The British regulars are colour samples for the four regiments that were involved in the First NZW. So here's my impressionistic collision of metal and paint:

to be continued...

Great work, Grimnir! Very crisp and nicely fresh colours.
-
Work for me. Look great.
-
Wonderful!
I'm just finishing up my first few.
-
Great stuff, just the ticket.
-
Very nice work indeed! o_o o_o o_o
Not a bad uniform guide for one or two of us to boot :).
Darrell.

Really great work 8)
Are these Victrix plastic bases?
-
Yes, the bases are Victrix. They combine the advantages of both rectangular and round bases. You can arrange them in chocolate bar formations and they don't look strange in loose formation.
-
This is something I may haver to shunt up my "to do" list! Very nice painting.
-
Very nice - not helping me avoid buying some of these though! :)
-
Cool paintwork 8) My "to buy" list grows ever longer ::)
-
Very successful meeting with paint! ;D
-
It has been quite some time but slow and steady I am continuing my "blotty" work.

awsome!!! great work mate looking forward to seeing lots more
-
Yep!
The Chaps look very nice, indeed. :-*
-
Wot my esteemed colleagues said : very nice work.
-
The maori in particular look superb.
-
Great job you've done on them :-*
Really like the scenery pieces you've done too!
-
I've just seen these for the first time – really great stuff. Empress produce such lovely minis, and these have fine paint jobs. :)
How does the saying go? "I really don't need to start buying stuff for another period, but..." lol
-
They really are nicely done! and a superb range of figures.
-
Most excellent! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Those are superb painting jobs - well done!
Where did you get the plastic fern for the bases? It looks really good.
I've also just finished another four Maori and four colonials myself. Such great fun to paint, and beautifully sculpted. They'll go up on my blog in a few days.

The ferns are etched brass. I ordered a few from Hasslefree (link (http://www.hasslefreeminiatures.co.uk/range.php?range_id=48)). However, the plants did not looked like the ferns that I know so I cut them to pieces and assembled the leaves anew.
It is a bit of work but I think it gives the miniatures that certain Aotearoa touch they deserve :D
-
Thanks for that info about the ferns.
Here in New Zealand I've found a local supplier of Noch paper HO/OO photo-etched ferns, so I've ordered some of those tonight to see what they're like.
As you say, nothing like a fern or two to give a touch of this country.

I look at your painted figures, great paint jobs and say, " no no I will not order some, then go to another post. Then come back to yours, look at the photos, find something I missed and again tell myself no. No is losing out thanks to you. I do have some figures that Richard Houston did in the 1980's, if I remember correctly, but they don"t compare. I have to save me from myself.lol

KIA ORA! The project is still alive and kicking.
After my motivation to take photos has awakened from hibernation I took the time to shoot some work i have done since summer. Thankfully my painting motivation does not care about winter ;)

Lovely work chap

As a fellow NZ Wars painter (an hopefully one day gamer) I've got to say how impressed I am with your work. You've got a clean and natural style that complements these exquisite figures beautifully.
I love the pa palisades, too. The grey colour you chose in the end looks very convincing. And you've done loopholes correctly at ground level.
I presume the 'Red Shed' is a tip of the hat to the modern-day New Zealand bargain store chain, 'The Warehouse' (known for its large red shed-like stores)?
I'm looking forward to that new release from Empress, too ... http://arteis.wordpress.com/2012/03/28/guess-whatll-be-in-empresss-forthcoming-nz-wars-release/
-
it is outstanding !
-
Thanks for the nice compliments.
@Roly
Yes, the 'Red Shed' is a humorous take on the general store building from the Perrys. I decided on a red painting because I neither wanted another white nor the blue shown on the package. Then I remembered the nick name of the Warehouse and had a name for the shop.
-
Just caught up with this thread, and would like to add my congratulations on a very well turned out project!
Lovely stuff!
:-*
I will be keeping a regular check back on this one as my forthcoming VSF project will involve a heavy NZ influence, so your scenery pictures will be particularly useful.
Thank you!
:)

Beautiful work, I ahve tried once to game this period way back when Old Glory brought their range out however the miniatures were such hideous carbuncles that I gave up :?
These however are stunning and your paint work shows them off very nicely. :-*
I hope they do expand and would love to see the later wars miniatures with the Rangers etc
-
Just finished in time for the new releases lol ;)
Speaking of which, what would those be ? :D
-
Lovely, lovely work. :-* :o
Really very nice. Great miniatures, great paintjobs and great terrain.

Tell us more, Mason - this sounds great. A similar project had briefly crossed my mind too ... so would love to see what you had in mind.
