Doctor Who actress Sladen dies
(UKPA) – 38 minutes ago
Doctor Who actress Elisabeth Sladen has died of cancer at the age of 63, the BBC has confirmed.
She joined the programme in 1973 and became one of the most popular companions in her role as Sarah Jane Smith. In 2007 she was given her own spin-off series, the Sarah Jane Adventures, which introduced her to a new generation of fans.
Tributes have been pouring in for the Liverpool-born actress, known to her friends and family as Lis.
Russell T Davies, creator of The Sarah Jane Adventures, which won this year's RTS Award for best children's drama, said all those involved in the series had been left "reeling" at news of her death.
He said: "I absolutely loved Lis. She was funny and cheeky and clever and just simply wonderful.
"The universe was lucky to have Sarah Jane Smith; the world was lucky to have Lis."
Sladen starred in Doctor Who alongside Jon Pertwee, the third doctor, and his successor Tom Baker.
She then returned to the series on a number of occasions over the years before her own CBBC show was created, in which she starred as an investigative journalist trying to defend Earth from extraterrestrial threats.
It had not been widely known that she had been suffering from ill health. She leaves behind her husband, the actor Brian Miller, and daughter Sadie.
Doctor Who lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat said she was a "ferociously talented actress".

Way, way way to early :(

Thanks Joroas for this news. A great partner for the doctor in the Doctor Who series in which I enjoyed very much.
Cheers,
Helen

Tragic! :'(

I loved watching Doctor Who with Sarah as a kid. I think I was more upset when she left than when they changed doctors.
Rest in peace.

Despearately sad to hear this news. She was my favourite Dr Who companion and she and Tom Baker were my "dream team". As a geeky teenager Katy Manning as Jo Grant was my pin-up so when she left the show I was devastated. No worries, Lis joined and Sarah Jane made everything all right again.
Seeing her re-appear in School Reunion alongside David Tennant was a real surprise - one of those fist-in-the-air "Yes!" moments. My son is also saddened, as he's also a great Who and SJA fan.
Such a shame, but she will be fondly remembered by millions of Who fans around the world, so that's some legacy at least.

Very very sad, such a lovley lady and actress who made the screen alive with her talent. Great loss I think the kids of today will miss her as much as the dads of yesterday.
RIP you will be so missed

Female companions have often been either scream queens, or stoically 'stiff upper lip' strong. Sarah Jane always seemed to have just the right balance for the drama, with a bit of extra sparkle. Many a talented and promising following companion seemed to suffer by comparison. Case of 'they weren't bad; she was just too good'...
Naturally, in my case, a bit unfair, really. She was my first. ;->=
Of course, condolences to Ms. Sladen's husband and daughter, but I hope they find pleasure in world-wide fond remembrances.

Gutted, truly amazing woman and my favourite companion by far. the spark between her and Tom Baker was just electric. Hopefully the Beeb will do a "celebration of" programme.

First Nicholas Courtney, now Eliabeth Sladen. Can we have round-the-clock medical attention for Katy Manning and Caroline John, please?

This is a hard one. :'(

Oh, how sad. Mrs Rab and I loved watching her in both incarnations (Dr Who and SJA). RIP :(

Such a shock--Elisabeth seemed to be such a vivacious person--I thought she'd out live us all. Sarah was the companion in the first Doctor Who story I saw (Robot) and a big factor in me becoming a fan of the show to this day. Hope there is enough of SJA series 5 filmed to give Sarah Jane a proper send off. Bummed to hear she and Tom were planning to team up for some new audio adventures--how amazing would that have been?

Definitely a shock to hear about this. Being a private person meant the news of her illness and sudden passing caught us all out.
Condolences to her family and friends. She leaves behind a lot of happy memories, which is a wonderful legacy,

We just need to throw Matthew Waterhouse (Adric) and Mark Strickson (Turlough) at the reaper to delay him a bit. Katy Manning is still spry and as cheerful as ever, though.
