Title: My first painted superhero - Cap. America
Post by: clam on 27 April 2011, 11:32:35 AM
I'm an old school conservative fantasy collector and painter, but having 2 sons (aged 4 and 8 - and with no interest for classic fantasy what so ever), I'm 'forced' to try out new things to have their attention and stimulate an interest for miniature painting  :)

A common interest for all 3 of us is the an extreme fascination of (Marvel) Superheroes in general. They are obviously fan of Spiderman and Batman - but I'm pleased that they also fancy the more enjoyable characters like Cap. America, Daredevil, Thor, Hulk, etc.

So, it's quite obvious, I've tempted starting painting some superheroes (and later super villains).

Picked up the not-captain America, shown here a LAF some time ago and have now painted him:

But now, they want more :)

So my question is: "Where do I find other recognisable metal superhero miniatures like this one?" Preferably in a 28-32mm scale. I am aware of HeroClix - but ....  >:( ..., no - not a valid option, sorry  ::)

So where to go to find good sculpts suitable for heroes like

Thor
Batman & Robin
Hulk
Ironman
Spiderman
Superman
Captain Britain
Daredevil
Fantastic Four
Sub-Mariner
etc.

Perhaps not exact rip offs, but close enough so minor conversions could do the trick.

Any good stick threads here at LAF I might have missed out on?

Your Cap looks great!

Decent metal superhero figures can be hard to come by, but there are some resources.

Superfigs yields some items that might be suitable for conversion:
http://www.fourcolorfigs.com/catalog.html

The Reaper Chronoscope line is coming out with new superhero types pretty regularly:
http://www.reapermini.com/FigureFinder

Black Hat miniatures does a few superheroes:

Pulp City has some excellent superhero figures:
http://store.pulp-city.com/

There are other superhero figures buried in some other lines as well.

What The? also does a skull-headed villain that would be a natural enemy for Cap. Reaper do a close not-Punisher in their Chronoscope line.

For a classic superman caped flying pose look at Dark Solar from Pulp City.

If you're willing to step away from metal look here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=26763.0
His model of the hulk is amazing, I ordered one and the shipping went very smooth!

Hasselfree will be coming out with a "Not" Kick-Ass shortly.

Brigade has Super Duper Man

While they are not supers, you might find something useful in the Golgo Island range from East Riding.

http://shop.eastridingminiatures.co.uk/golgo-island-171-c.asp

Team Frog has the Living Legends line, but their shop has been down for a long time.  The scale was pretty all over the place with that line though.

http://www.teamfrog.com/fig-ll.htm

I like supers alot too.  Other than the ones already mentioned, I can't think of many out there.  You could always try to hunt Ebay for the old Grenadier Marvel, DC, and Watchman sets.  Sometimes I find useful things on other ranges too.  Crooked Dice, Hasslefree, Heresy, Copplestone, Black Cat Bases, Foundry, Infinity, etc.  You just have to think out of the box a little.  Looking for standard cape and cowl guys gets frustrating.

If you're any good at sculpting, maybe some dollies from either Reaper or Bronze Age.

Thanks guy, certainly a lot capes and cowls out there, I can see.

Would have expected a few more "rip off's" than actually presented here. Seems like I'll have to do a bit of sculpting to reproduce what I'm after - but certainly lots of miniatures to work from.

Cheers!

Check out Pulp Figures for possible Red Skull minis. Think they're in the wierd menace range.

I've visited the Reaper site, looking at all their Chronoscope minis, and these are the ones that most closely resemble Marvel characters:
http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Chronoscope/sku-up/50007 (http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Chronoscope/sku-up/50007) as Sharon Carter

http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Chronoscope/sku-up/50080 (http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Chronoscope/sku-up/50080) as Quicksilver

http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Chronoscope/sku-up/50171 (http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Chronoscope/sku-up/50171) as the High Evolutionary / Doctor Doom
http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Chronoscope/sku-up/50219 (http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Chronoscope/sku-up/50219) as Queen Medusa

Many of them would need some conversion work, but nothing major.

This here has been very, very useful to me. Thanks a lot. Have picked up 4 Reaper's and will have a go at Dr. Doom, Hulk and Ironman. And then I picked up a different 50080 - Zenith than the one at ReaperMini's - not sure what to use him for.

Also pretty sure a Superman will be flying in soon.

So plenty to work with - for now.

Thanks guys for all you help.

And then I really need to find a useful base for a Thor conversion. Having sons and a new film in the theatres makes such a miniature conversion very urgent. So anyone tried it/thought of it/have a good idea? Still in 28-30mm metals  :)

I would say that  http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Chronoscope/sku-up/50219 would be better as Spider Woman

Oh, very good point. I knew that mini reminded me of some other character, but I failed at recognizing that.

@ Clam: I don't think this would really suit you, but Reaper (again) has a mythological Thor:

If it's the running one, he looks a lot like Speed Demon from Thunderbolts.

If it's this guy

I don't know, but he's neat looking.  He doesn't show up on Reaper's site, but he's cool.  I know they previewed him a long time ago, but I never saw a release.

Superfigs have a pretty nasty not Az-bats (Azrael in the tech-batsuit from Knightfall/knight's end).

Also don't dismiss the clickies, Yup bendy plastic aside, I have a very good spidey repaint, just needed to turn his webslinging hand round 180 degrees and he goes from devil worshipper to full on webslinger. The Reaper not Ironman is nice once you lose the rocketeer helmet fin.

Good luck.

And if you're daring enough to strip the paint off the clix, there are some nice sculpts under all that thick paint sometimes.  It is time consuming and nothing really works except acetone.

They were LE and unofficial releases, I *think* by What The? minis. The manufacturer changed hands recently but may still go by that name, not sure.

If anyone knows of a suitable 28mm metal "Captain Britain", I would certainly be interested as well.

And for the Cap. america - this thread might be useful to you: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=12837.135

But I think Brian (Kampfgruppe Cottrell) is still selling sets at ebay.com.
