Post by: General M@yhem on October 15, 2007, 06:46:05 PM
Hi,
Another question from yours truly.
What were the main tanks used by both the British and germans in NorthAfrica?
Thanks for any replies.

Which part of North Africa? The fighting in the Western Desert? Or the Torch campaigns? in French Africa?

The Germans used mostly Panzer III and IV with Itaian tanks like the Semovente and occasionally captured Allied tanks. The Commonwealth foces used Vickers Light Tanks, Shermans, Grants, Matildas, Valentines and Crusaders.

A good overview of all tanks is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_military_vehicles_of_World_War_II#United_Kingdom Click on each one and it usually has info n where it was used.

The types vary depending on date.
Not sure about German equipment but British kit is detailed in regimental diaries.

To be honest, my NA WW2 history is pretty poor.I was looking at doing something with the 8th Army and Afrika Korps if that helps narrow things. Haven't got anything yet , just laying the groundwork.i wanted to keep it fairly small scale as I was going to use the Iron Ivan rules. Really just a skirmish with a platoon and a tank/armoured car each side.

Also, who does the best selection of 28mm scale tanks/armoured cars for this arena?

Chieftain Models make the best vehicles.

Hi GM,

Here is a good link ( Axis Forum) to start you off with with plenty of information from learned folk who have an interest in North Africa during WW2.

Armour and supporting arms changes from early war to the later period in North Africa.

Now for vehicles and figures. As Paul has indicated, Crouchie from Chieftain Models, BAM, Artizan, Brigade Games, Company B, AGN, Black Tree, Battle Honours, WestWind and Chiltern - just to name a few! All have something that can be used in North Africa.

Don't forget the Italians too, they were excellent and brave soldiers. BAM and Artizan have some lovely Italians in their range with more to come and supported by some very good vehicle models from a number of companies.

Same goes for the French forces too, whether Vichy or Free French.

Hope this helps.
