Hello everybody,
As i am playing a Finnish WW2 unit, i'm looking to expand his capacities with Weird machines and heroes.
My opponent is using this kind of units against me : http://www.allankieffer.fr/post/2011/02/27/Showcase-%3A-Fallschirmj%C3%A4gers (http://www.allankieffer.fr/post/2011/02/27/Showcase-%3A-Fallschirmj%C3%A4gers)
So i'm asking you fellow gamers and history fanactics, could you give me a hand and help me finding weird heroes or units related to Finnish country or nordic countries (norvegia, sweden,etc...) ?
I have no knowledge about heroes or weird projects of this countries, so if you have any ideas about maybe mythology or anything, i would be more than happy to hear them.
Thank you for your help.
Regards.
Kieffer
PS : Even weird machines or heroes from other countries could be accepted as long as they can be "Finlandized" (with Finnish flag or details). ;)

This is your man if you are looking for heroes ;)
If you want some foreign flavour you can do a unit of Swedes:

A really weird one would be a walker with skiis on :D

Funny you should mention that. I was looking into this some time ago. You could field hiisi, evil spirits which could be described as goblins.

Well, especially for Winter War, any tank or plane would already count as an oddity...
Stealth suits, vanishing units and ghost snipers could fit the theme. Antti Rokka might make a straightforward action hero. Forest trolls will definitely improve any game. I guess reindeers are somewhat exotic but not particularly useful for other than food, really.
Or maybe you could watch Rare Exports. Coca-Cola ads have nothing to do with the truth. :P

Leningrad Cowboys are the obvious choice. Quiffs that can kill.

Thanks for all your suggestions. ;)
When suggesting options, don't hesitate to add a link where a manufacturer or a model able to represent this option. It would be very helpful. (I'm gaming 28mm).
PS : Would a spirit of the forest like this be a good idea ?

That´s cool! just add some snow and a pair of skiis and you are the king of the battlefield ;)
-
I think I would start with Finnish sagas and go from there, there must be a story or 2 about weird creatures, if not some Nordic stuff will work
good luck with the project

Sure, although something slightly thinner and gloomier might fit the local style better. Oaks and such don't grow here that well.

Weird warfare has a long history in Finland.

Well, a real life hero from the winter war:
http://www.cracked.com/article_17019_5-real-life-soldiers-who-make-rambo-look-like-pussy.html
(admittedly I'm referencing a humor site lol )
Simo Hayha, "The White Death": a sniper and one man army, whose kill-count over the course of 100 days was 705. The russians mounted whole missions to find him.
Hope that is of some use.

Elk rider cavalry, and of course that old lap land fav Santa Claus! FLyinf Raindeer and a jolly fat man with "presents" for the germans. Bombs that is.
-
I wouldn't mind seeing a take on Väinämöinen and his tank-producing Sampo, although I probably would settle for a mech-suited Mannerheim clone. lol

We have a common project running over at the LAC(Sweden) board which we call 'Skägglav' (a lichen of the Parmeliaceae type) as it epitomizes mythological creatures of a distinctly Scandinavian type and aesthetic. The intention is to concoct a fantasy game with creatures from the books we read as kids. Troll, jättar, skogsrån, Näcken Mjölkharen etc as they were painted by Scandinavian artists.
The common opinion is that a Scandinavian skogstroll (forest troll) looks something like a GW gnobblar.
If there is an interest we could translate the thread and move it to the common Fantasy board.

Hattifnattar! How could I forget?! And Morran!

Trolls. There is a book of Kerstin Ekman about a troll from Sweden (the French title is : "Les brigands de la forêt de Skule").
Or have a look in Lapon litterature and folklore, we should not forget the Lapon element in Finland:

Sorry, Cottrell, that is definitely NOT 'Skägglav', as any Dane-Swede-Norwegian and perhaps Finnlander would tell you. That's a North-American wendigo-cum-D&D creature. Not trying to be sanarky here, just a bit of cultural sensitivity training. ;)

He's a downed Allied agent in talks with the Fins to turn sides and actively help against the Ratzis.
Tell me a more compelling negotiator then Bigfoot's cousin?

Louhi would kick the sh*t out of him with her magical wings and claws. ;)
I still want to see the Mechamannerheim. Or is that crossing a line?

lol
No, not if it is mecha-on-a-shoe-string/nicked Soviet technology enough. The thing should be built on Swedish-French-Soviet-German-British components fit together with a lot of Finnish seasoned combat engineer experience. It should only be lobbing Molotov cocktails, fight close combat like a mad man with a giant puukko, run on 190 proof cellulose vodka and there would only be one of each series. And it would KICK ASS.
I may come across as flippant but I say with with all the admiration I have in me. :)

I pity the poor logistics officers who will have to travel interminably on ferries with duty-free shops to procure the fuel at an affordable price. Oh, the hardship one endures in war.

Some sort of light vehicle that is on a ski base or sled base that has a big prop fan out the back like a Florida swamp boat to get it moving about.
You could have it equipped with some machine guns or rockets and fragile but fast support.
Also with all the talk I am surprised no one has mentioned Ukko or maybe i am thinking of Perkele, i see him as an old man version of Thor from the marvel comics moving around the battlefield shooting people with lightening and shouting "have at thee".
And also Tursas, moving around in the forest fighting everything in one on one combat.
And lastly maybe also a bear like the Ursus from SOTR Russians.
I don't know a lot about Finnish folk lore so i might be thinking more Norse but i hope this helps.
-
Ok, how weird is weird? During the Winter War, in 1939oviets tested some monster prototype tanks. At least one broke down inside Finnish lines. The Soviets later recovered it but you could always posit that the Finns stole it and copied it.
http://www.battlefield.ru/en/tank-development/32-experimental-vehicles/54-smk.html.
Now, if you want to make one you'll ideally want at least 2X models KV-1s and a T-26 turret. If you wre doing this in 1/72 then you could do it quite cheaply using the Pegasus kits. In 28mm you might want to look at Hobby Boss or Tamiya's 1/48 offerings. You could really surprise an opponent with one of these and of course the Finns were notable users of captured kit.
-
Thor? ;)

Thanks for the huge amount of suggestions.
I'm definitely a fan of Mechamannerheim or the Lapland folklore. Trolls, gods, nice ideas. ;)

Remember that the mythology of Finland and the Baltic states is not quite the same as the Norse pantheon.
