Title: Pulp Newspapers ?
Post by: Argonor on 17 October 2007, 07:24:45 PM
Hi

Does anyone know where to look for pictures of real newspaper-frontpages from the inter-war era?

I'm sort of back in the saddle and  would like to make some nice handouts with interesting ads and articles revealing some plot hooks and the like (the occational odd ad circled in red in a paper lost by a villain, etc...)

I usually scan ebay with "newspaper" and either "1930" or "1920" in the seach field. Brings up lots of examples.

There is a prop Cd available for Call of Cthulhu that has documents etc :

Or there are some books that might have a few useful bits (although they are a bit hit & miss, it's usually just pictures of packaging etc) from Robert Opie :

You might even find an online archive of old newspapers, but they are perhaps less likely to be useful.

eg

I know that there is a book called "History as Hot News" that covers 1865-1897, but there may be something similar for later eras. I vaguely recall one called "Front Page History" but cannot remember what it covered.

There are reprinted volumes of certain magazines that cover specific periods, "Punch" (an old UK satirical magazine) has a few volumes, "Good Housekeeping" (a magazine with lots of cookery hints etc) has a few volumes on the lines of "Best of the 1940s". There's a compilation edition of "Signal" (German propoganda magazine 1930s-1945, you'd have to be very selective with which pages you chose, but it might be handy for a plot involving spies perhaps)

Simple.

Go to www.cthulhulives.org  They just released a 20's newspaper section.
