Title: Sci-fi and Pulp terrain
Post by: ironmammoth on May 05, 2011, 01:43:39 PM
I acquired a large bag of random pieces of clear acrylic some time ago. They were just fantastic shapes and the light shining through them was great. I had to find a use for them.

I found they looked pretty good when stacked, and that is where this project came from. I am slowly putting together a collection of pulp sci-fi figures (mainly Hydra Miniatures range), but I am also doing some 15mm sci-fi stuff as well. So keeping it multipurpose will be handy.

Just a teaser for the moment, but more photos to follow...

Exquisite. I generally like illuminated terrain pieces, and those look absolutely splendid.

Did you tint the pieces or did they come in that slight blue tinge? The broken light effects coupled with the blue hue work out perfectly.

And, finally, where did you get them? Pieces at a craft store, or custom-made?

I am planning a full blog post about how I built all this, once they are finished. I have been photographing it as I went. In the mean time, the blue tint is made by pouring blue tinted resin over the acrylic towers, this both softened the shape a little and tinted it blue.  I have also put blue theatre lighting gels below the towers to tint the light coming up from the LEDs.

I'll give you a lot more in the blog post. Now I must get back to working on them...

I run a model making workshop at a school of architecture. One of our students laser cut a model of a tower out of 6mm clear acrylic. The best way to describe the look of the thing was "swiss cheese". All thin wisps of acrylic with lots of irregular (but rounded) holes.

I got all of the bits that were the "holes in his swiss cheese". After building all the spires for my scenery I still have at least half the bag left. So I will be thinking of other uses for it when I get the time..

Those sure look like handwavium deposits to me. I think Bucky O'hare and the Space Rangers better secure that moon pronto! :D

(although I'm no planetologist, they could be unobtanium too...)
