Title: Colonial Redcoat Figure Comparison
Post by: tim in saskatoon on May 27, 2011, 10:31:12 PM
I was painting up some more British for the Zulu War, then got it in my head to take a bunch of pictures comparing a number of the various British Colonial Redcoats in my collection. Here are the fruits of my labour:

A nicely painted collection of Redcoats and such a useful comparison.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, that looks great... I only wish there had been an Empress miniature too...

Thanks all!

I painted up a few new foundry figures and I thought I'd add another picture as they seem a little different from the other foundry figures I did:

They seem a little "chunkier" in the hands/face/helmet to me, and maybe a bit "cartoonier"...? I don't mind them... but they do seem noticeably different (to me) from the other figures in the line...?

They do look a lot different. Not nearly as nice as the others in this range. The dreaded Bratwurst-finger syndrome strikes again and the bugler's proportions are dreadful! Foundry's Zulus are definitely better than their British.

Even your splendid paintwork can't salvage them I'm afraid and considering how good your OGs look, that's saying something.

I'll be sticking to Empress when I get around to buying my Zulu War British stuff  :)

Hi I know this is an old thread....first of all great figures and painting! I notice that you have corrected the Black Tree helmets..were they complete head swaps or what? I have a load of BTD and am considering swapping the heads with Empress heads, although this will cost me almost as much as buying new figures.

Are those awful 'Foundry' figures actually from the Casting Room Miniatures range?

The original Foundry Zulu War figures were sculpted by one or more of the Perrys. The difference between the two is only too apparent from these photos (the officer in cap with sword and one of the riflemen are Perry sculpts).

No, I just carved off the weird piping on the helmets and painted them as I would any other (adding in a dark line where the seams in the fabric would be).

Yes, I believe they are now sold as Casting Room Miniatures. They were originally sold as Wargames Foundry figures.

Thanks Tim! That's good to know. I will try to do a couple using your method and see how much work it is. I have over 80 to do. I picked up the BTD figures cheap at Salute years ago. It's time I did something with them. As well as redcoats I plan to do some as RMLI in dark blue and some as KRRC in Rifle green. I may even convert some to the black Home Service helmet with the spike atop.
