Title: Wargaming on the shelf...
Post by: DonVoss on 30 May 2011, 09:28:31 PM
Well its not my idea, I read about it in an old wargaming magazine years ago.
The idea is more or less to play like a child with its plasticsoldiers an the book-shelf: a very narrow gaming board, but quite long. Say 6" wide and 26" long... ;)

Of course you have to make special scenarios to let the idea work...

I don't know if anyone ever build a narrow board or gamed a narrow game, but here is my interpretation.

Examples of scenarios...
Spain 1810, a french collumn in search of a spanish guerilla-leader is penetrating a mountain-pass, poorly defended by some spanish soldiers. But a relief-force is on the way.

Or of course the Thermopylae...

And 1942 in the Caucasus. Wehrmacht hunting down the Red Army-Forces...

And the gamingtable.
It is modular designed because I have to transport it around.

The river can be made into a wadi or be covered completly...

So what do you think of the idea...?

DV... :)

That's a great idea well executed. Is the river cover the river piece turned upside down?

That takes me back to when I used to do "Bridge at Remagen" type scenarios using my Airfix bridge, tanks and soldiers. Even though it was a very limited battlefield area, I used to have some great games trying to get my Americans across.

I've also played a few games which involved trying to fight through defiles etc using a similar shaped board.

That's a lovely set-up and limited only by the scenarios you dream up. I look forward to reading your game reports  :D.

Wonderful idea.  This would be easy to transport, and you could store it on a shelf with minis on top as a diorama when not in use.  Just brilliant.
