Title: tavern keepers and serving wenches suitable for medieval/renaissance ?

Check out Hasslefree.

Their Villagers range has a barman, barwench and strumpet that might work or be easily converted.

Reaper has some nice ones too.

Also Black Cat Bases have a few very nice civilian type of miniatures, strumpet, barman etc etc.

I also found some In the Redoubt Three Musketeers range but I guess those are huge :?

Yes - the Redoubt ones are in keeping with the rest of their Musketeer range.

Mega-minis have some in their village/town civilians range.

White Knight mentioned Reaper, but I want to be more specific and say that he's talking about the Reaper Townsfolk packs.  One of these has a magnificent barkeep and a couple of perfect serving wenches.  Other Townsfolk packs have useful figures.  I think there are about 6 different townsfolk packs at this point, or perhaps 7.  Go to the Reaper web site and type "Townsfolk" into the search function and you will be able to see images of all of those packs.

There is also one bulk pack of Reaper Townsfolk which incorporates at least 4 of the packs.

Same size as evil empire models...
