My new Back Of Beyond project. White Russians leaded by Mad Baron himself. Copplestone stuff, also the armoured car,
only the FT-17 is from HLBS (a bit too small compared to Copplestone minis). I'm going to begin painting them next week,
when i'll get ready some other things.
-
Very WWI like, cool. What do you think how long you'll need to paint the lot?
-
we'll see, I guess ca. 4 weeks
-
Very cool, looking forward to seeing how it comes together :) I love that Copplestone armoured car as well... 4 weeks for all of that!
n.
-
4 weeks ?
Have fun :)
Björn
-
4 weeks! In 4 weeks I can get the car done. That's about it. :(
I can't wait to see them all though. :)
-
but you know what i mean, not in the next 4 weeks, that's just the time that i maybe need to paint the lot, in the next 4 weeks i will be running parallel with white russians my darkest Africa project, other ca. 40 figs. need them for the game middle october
-
Prof.Witchheimer we must play BoB together !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Grimm
-
of course, we'll do it :)
-
Four weeks for all that?!???! :o :o
By middle of October I will finish my 10 Gurkhas and finish a tank. If I'm real lucky, I may even finish a terrain piece! :freak:
Prof Witchheimer - How do you do it? Magic?
-
yes, that's magic :D but that's just a guess, it could be also 5 weeks :)
today's outcome
(http://www.witchhunter.net/blog/images/06_09_11_white_russians.jpg)
-
:o That is beautiful! How many hours did you take to do that?? :o
Yesterday I only managed to paint the webbing on 4 British Paratroopers!
-
ca.4,5 hours :)
-
I need to change the way I paint! Maybe I should only work on 3 figs at a time, instead of trying to do 6 - 8 each time.
-
I did paint them only one miniature at a time, the colours were too different
-
Prof: The miniatures look fantastic as usual. My one hope is that someday you pick up some of mine and paint and post pictures of them.
I think on that day I would
-
Sure :) I'm just waiting for release of your recent greens:

I did paint them only one miniature at a time, the colours were too different
All my miniatures are very different... but in spite of that I've never less than 20 half-finished figures on my table...
-
and the next bunch, needed six hours for them, had backache after that but i'm really happy with the putcome
(http://www.witchhunter.net/blog/images/06_09_12_white_russians.jpg)
-
Prof - that is unbelievable!! I take 4 days to do 5 infantry figures!! (Of course I only paint 2 hours a day)
-
Rotmistr(captain) Sobolevski, Detached Izhevsk Rifle Brigade!
only one painted mini today, I was very late home
-
Amazing! I salute you, Sir!
-
You really amaze me, Prof... The quality of your work and the little time you seem to spend in each figure...!!
-
...much more mind-blowing is the fact that he paints everyday. I often just don't feel like sitting on the table and painting again.
-
...much more mind-blowing is the fact that he paints everyday. I often just don't feel like sitting on the table and painting again.
I wish I had the time to paint every day. I used to. But too many things take up my days now; from writing new stuff to paperwork to filling orders.
-
The pace the good Prof. keeps up is indeed intimidating, esp. considering the beautiful results!
I miss having whole days to paint, like I used to, pre-baby/marriage.
I suppose I'll have enough time when the boy is a teen-ager, and dosen't want to play fire engines anymore
-
That's my situation indeed... The problem is that, maybe, when the kid becomes a teenager... I'll have to paint HER miniatures, not MINE...!!
-
I have a small child as well, who loves painting miniatures too :D She is really the joy of my life, but when she and my partner are sleeping, I get a couple of hours to paint. Sometimes it pays to be a morning person
Fantastic work on those white Russians Prof! Keep them coming!
n.
-
Keep them coming!
no problem :)
-
the next five :P
(http://www.witchhunter.net/blog/images/06_09_15_white_russians.jpg)
-
Hey Prof.Witchheimer what kinde of troops they are ?
Looks like naval soldier ?
-
no naval :) they're white russian officers, a compulsory troop type for Ungern's army, they wear the dress uniform for their last fight against the reds
-
(http://www.witchhunter.net/blog/images/06_09_16_white_russians.jpg)
-
OK I want to know specific which colors do you use and if you mix them ?
Grimm
-
uniform - VCM Khaki grey+ VCM Ivory (mix them, ca. 5 layers)
grey coat - Foundry Slate Grey Set(A,B,C), need mixing between B and C
rifle - Foundry spearshaft set(A,B,C) without mixing
-
now it's time for Darkest Africa. After 15.Oct I will continue the white russians.
-
Thanks for the step by step progess reports. I really like the way you set out your in your first photograph. It's a process that has inspired me to approach my painting in a different manner.
As with the rest of your work, the miniatures look stunning :D
Cheers,
Barry

Neatski! Ready for a butkiksky? But that red shirt looks conspicuously like a turncoat (pun intended!). ;)
not necessarily :) red colour was particularly popular among peasants in Russia independently of Red Army and Soviets

-
That's it! Tonight I'm gonna paint some pulp!!! I thought I was going to finish my middle-eastern Hovels-houses first, but I can't bear to look at my half-finished pulp trio any more!
-
New here, and I want to say that your painting has provided lots of enjoyment as I've lurked here. I can't wait to see the little tankette painted up. How long will that take you; thirty minutes or so? :)
By the way, can someone here tell me what the emoticon "Mr. Green" is supposed to represent?
-
Well, after 7,5 years I am here back again. I didn't finish this project and unfortunately I've sold some of the unpainted stuff I was intending to use for this, especially cavalry :-[
So now, as you maybe know from the Master thread, my goal for the next six months is to get finished folowing items - Mounted Mad Baron, about 10 characters (advisors, mercenaries, spies etc.), two forces of about 10 figures each, one Chinese Bandit, one Mongol. Two pack animals. FT-17 tank. One armoured car. Two trucks. One plane.
Quite a lot..I guess some weeks later I will be regreting being that generous today as I have some other current projects running here on LAF :D But no risk and so on.. you know what I mean.
So first let's see what I have finished so far in all the long 7,5 years. Here comes the force of the Baron Ungern-Sternberg:
some close-ups..
Mad Baron himself, White Russian Elite Infantry:
Armoured Car, Orthodox priest, Advisors, White Russians in Chinese Service
(http://www.backofbeyond.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/BoB_mad_baron_sternberg_force_02.jpg)
White Russian ragged infantry
(http://www.backofbeyond.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/BoB_mad_baron_sternberg_force_04.jpg)
Partisans:
Warlord Chinese Mercenaries:
Okay, now let's have a look at some unpainted stuff, so my next steps in this project. Unfinished FT-17 (lots of dust on it, really), Mad Baron on the horse, Trans-Siberian Renegades from Bob Murch, Corto Maltese, advisors again etc.
Still have to buy some Chineses and Mongols. But for the first time I've got enough on my desk. Let's get painting.
-
So much BoB goodness to come! Nice Choice Prof, 7,5 years ago it were your miniatures that pushed me in the whole RCW/BoB thing.
-
Excellent 8)
Looking forward to seeing it done ;D
cheers
James
-
Some of the stuff that brought me to this site in the olden days! Great idea, Prof!
-
Here we go with the first painted miniature. Perhaps my favorit miniature from the shown unpainted lot.
Marina Semenova is a cold and beautiful russian noblewoman who appears in the Corto Maltese comics. There she has some business in Manchuria and plays one of the main roles in the "Corto Maltese in Siberia" book. I was immediately thinking of her seeing this lovely Bob Murch sculpt. Okay, I've changed the hair color from blond to black but that's only due to the color of her hat and fur cloack.

If you interested to see how the lady looks in the Corto maltese comics, here I've found a nice Youtube video featuring some shots with her from the comics:

This is the stuff of legends almost! :-* :-*
I soo recall looking at your web site with all these gorgeous figures and finding the forum that way.
Wonder why I never picked up BoB...
-
Very WWI like, cool. What do you think how long you'll need to paint the lot?
we'll see, I guess ca. 4 weeks
lol lol lol lol
-
Very nice :-* :-*

Your post was even the last post in this thread in 2007, the next one came yesterday :)

Lovely figure Alex :-*I heartily approve; she looks how I imagine my forebears would look, however they were probably much more prosaic. I do have an early 20th century newspaper article about my great grandfather that you might be interested in? All about his escape from The gulags into China and beyond real ripping yarns stuff!

Of course, I'm interested, Guy! I didn't know your forebears came from Russia. So maybe I can implement one of the older Black Wolves in my project :) I'll contact you via PM.

Excellent :D

Lovely painting - good colour choices.

Lovely painting - good colour choices.
Thanks, I'm quite pleased with how the blue of the cloack turned out at the end.
-
I soo recall looking at your web site with all these gorgeous figures and finding the forum that way.
Me too!
Great to see an "old school" project of yours again, Prof! :-*
-
Brilliant - that Corto tale has loads of characters and plenty of settings, and the Duchess is a splendid example. 8) 8) 8)
-
Ahh Prof. a stunning paint of a lovely figure. Once again you set the standards.
And after so many years you start to inspire!
The duchess you made is excellent, though I would think of here as a hybrid between this figure and the smoking lady by Copplestone!
-
A real stunner of a paint job Prof, on a corker of a miniature. :-* :-* :-* I'm glad you get to work on this project a little more.
Cheers
Matt.
-
Thanks for the very kind comments, chaps, much appreciate it!
The duchess you made is excellent, though I would think of here as a hybrid between this figure and the smoking lady by Copplestone!
Yes, of course, that's sort of a mix there, though it's maybe up to my painting of her. I had both in mind, the Duchess Semenova and the other lady from the Siberia Corto Maltese book, namely the Shanghai Li (btw she may have been the model for Copplestone's smoking one):
that picture below is a courtesy of cortomaltese.com, check the link below for more Corto Maltese female characters:
http://cortomaltese.com/women/
If you have a look at Bob's painting so you can see that the duchess, in his case countess, looks more our a russian noble lady getting some blond hair
(http://pulpfigures.com/files/resized/php17x470.jpg)
-
Yes, Shanghai Li could be Copplestone's lady (she has oriental face characteristics, too).
But I believe that a better one would be the Bob Murches chinese lady holding the fan from the new pack PYG07
http://pulpfigures.com/products/view/197
just to keep her in her original origin.
-
Oh yes, this new one is so lovely :-* she's on my to-buy list already!
After all that talking about other Copplestone miniature I've decided to make some shots of these two lovely females. So here comes Shanghai Li! I've painted her about 10 years ago. I'm still quite pleased with her though I wouldn't mind to have the same miniature painted in brown tones for my collection. Maybe one day.
And a more dramatic shot, just for fun, including a smoking White Russian General and an advisor with a very cool hook arm, both Copplestone, both older paint jobs.

Perfect rendition of that miniature. Makes me want to redo mine!!!!
What exactly is Back of Beyond. Is there a central fiction delineating it?
-

Basically it's about "struggle for mastery of Central Asia that followed the Russian Revolution", so about 1919-1926/28. It includes Rusian civil War, the famous "Great Game" between Russia and Britain, the Mongolian campaign of Ungern-Sternberg, Wars in China, Tibetan frontier and so on. Lots of things meanwhile.
-
Great to see you reviving this project, inspired to get my Chinese finished off now.
-
Beautiful painting on the Duchess. :-*
-
Great stuff Alex, love the set piece photo :-* :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
Great work - will be following with interest. :)
-
Lovely painting as always, Alex! :-*
-
Cheers, chaps, appreciate your kind comments :)
Roman Nikolai Maximilian von Ungern-Sternberg, also known as Mad Baron. To be honest I've never been a big fan of this Copplestone's interpretation of the baron. I would prefer a more uniformed version and one day I will be converting one for sure. Though for the moment this one should be enough for my progress.
This time I've decided to use less bright colors (see my other version -> here (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=300.msg906256#msg906256)). I think I like it a bit more now.

I've also created a conversion of a Chinese mercenary, kind of a would-be bounty hunter. His name is Jet Fang and he will be a part of the coming Chinese bandits gang. I know he won't be the fastest guy in the gang but you know, the ox is slow but the earth is patient :)

Some wonderful figures are going in this project, Alex, with paintwork to match.
:-* :-*
I love all the little scenes that you are composing, I may have to steal that idea when I get going on mine.
;)
Oh, and that mercenary conversion is inspired!
(I think I shall steal that idea too!)
8)
-
Cheers, Paul, I'd be happy to find some of these ideas in your epic projects :)
-
I liked the bright Baron, but the muted one is excellent also. The photos are great. :)
I also like the bandit conversion, can't wait to see that painted.
-
I like your colour choices for the Baron, I may steal the idea for mine.
A clever conversion too, like it.
-
Great work Alex! :-* For some reason BoB is very attractive to me at the moment ;)
-
Well, Guy, BoB is one of the of the corner stones of this forum, I was pretty much in a BoB fever, starting LAF in those days :)
-
Excellent Alex. So happy to see this thread revived. So many lovely Copplestone figures, and your scenic pictures are jewel-like as ever :-*
Love that conversion too. He's going to be a great figure.
After all that talking about other Copplestone miniature I've decided to make some shots of these two lovely females. So here comes Shanghai Li! I've painted her about 10 years ago. I painted my version a while after you, but you see I went for both brown AND red :D
She's one of my favourite figures ever. (I hope you don't mind me posting her in your thread :))
Hmmm... Maybe I should revive my Transylvanian VSF thread. That must have been dead for at least a year... And what better subject for bringing back to life? ::)
-
Thanks, Richard! I can remeber her very well, she and her lovely team knocked down my werewolves in the Round 10 in one of the Lead Painter leagues :)
Hmmm... Maybe I should revive my Transylvanian VSF thread. That must have been dead for at least a year... And what better subject for bringing back to life? ::)
Yes, that's a splendid idea, don't think too much, just take them!
-
What an beautifully painted collection of minis; I'm in awe!
-
Prof,
It is great to see you back in BOB, it has been too long. I really like your latest version of the Mad Baron :-* and look forward to see your converted Chinese bandit painted up!
LB
-
The Duchess is ace, Alex, love her :-*
The chinese bountyhunter looks also great so far
-
Your post was even the last post in this thread in 2007, the next one came yesterday :)
And there I was thinking I was having the last word. :)
-
Ladies and gentleman, today we have the Prof himself here :D This very special Back of Beyond Prof was a gift from our Lt.Hazel who did convert him out of the Prof.Witchheimer miniature. He also painted him very nicely. Thanks, Jan, love your creation :)
And another conversion is following Prof, a young Indiana Jones! I've made him out of a Bob Murch miniature. You can scroll down this forum page and have a look at the Miniaturicum banner at the bottom to see how the original miniature looks like.

Prof is having some troubles passing the chinese province Xinjiang.

Also I've painted the converted bounty hunter. Painting him was a joy!

I love that Bounty Hunter!
Great conversion coloured-in to an equally high standard.
:-* :-*
Wonderful, seamless conversions and paintwork on the other two fellas too.
A great gift from Lt. Hazel.
Very thoughtful.

Lovely work Alex (and Jan) :-* :-*
You really know how to set a scene with figures 8) 8) 8)

Cheers, guys :) Jan is a very nice guy and next time you'll see some more conversion work made for me by him and by another very nice guy Admiral Benbow :)
-
Absolutely lovely painting.
-
Many of these figures are ones I painted recently myself and it's fantastic to see your take on 'em too. My own Duchess is rather darker, with a bit of a central asian cast to her. There are so many ways you can do that figure!
I LOVE the prof and Young Indy. Those are ACE conversions.
I will be posting a prof of my own soon, and I think you'll be a bit tickled at my interpretation... :D

Yes! Absolutely! That was one of my very favourite projects of yours; it's such a fun idea.

Lovely work on these Prof!
You made me dust of my BoB collection and start with my new years rezolution. But that will be a thread in itself further on :)
-
What a resurrection! :o
I am amazed at the speed you manage to paint and achieve such flabbergasting results! :-*
-
Cheers, gentlemen!
today nothing painted but some WIP pics. Some conversions made by some nice guys from this forum. Thanks, chaps!
First the two made by Lt.Hazel, the guy on the left side is a Obelisk civilian miniature now smoking and bearing a LMG :) the other is a Pulp Figures Tong gangster who got a rifle, new hands and some other details.

This one is made by Admiral Benbow, it's a Foundry Askari miniature with a head of a Foundry chinese pirate and a new finely sculpted pigtail.

and here some unconverted guys, just sticked to their bases, Copplestone chinese bandits, all of them

Great conversions 8) 8)
I must admit, I am intrigued by the UHU spaceship in the background lol

Great conversions 8) 8)

:D that's the booty of my last visiting of the local hardware store. My new very handy superglue. Top stuff.
-
That Obelisk miniature with the LMG is inspired! Looking forward to seeing you put some wonderful paint on it too!
-
Nice conversions.
They should add plenty of character to your bandit gang.
8) 8)
I have a few Tong left and may have to consider giving one of those some heavy firepower like yours.
:D
I am amazed at the speed you manage to paint and achieve such flabbergasting results! :-*
So am I!
All I have managed so far is chucking a bit of green stuff onto my newly hired orderlies at the Asylum, but they are not finished yet.
A most impressive output, Alex.
:)

Obelisk stuff is an amazing opportunity to spice up the gang. I wish I had more of them but thanks Admiral it looks like I will be getting a few of them soon :)
Nice conversions.

If you find a source for all the period suitable guns/rifles/heavy weapons, please le tme know. I had a few in my bitz box but I would need more if I want to get a whole troup only out of converted guys.
So am I!
All I have managed so far is chucking a bit of green stuff onto my newly hired orderlies at the Asylum, but they are not finished yet.
A most impressive output, Alex.
:)
Paul, I wouldn't worry about the state of your project, you have proved more than once that you are going to achieve your goals earlier or sooner :
Does it fly though lol
cheers
James
No, James, i prefer my superglue being non-flyable :)
-
That Obelisk miniature with the LMG is inspired! Looking forward to seeing you put some wonderful paint on it too!
Thats the best conversion I have seen in ages - truly genius

Superb. What a picture :-*
-
Wow! Great stuff.
Gotta get back to BoB.
-
Loving them! :-*
Sensing an approaching BoB-renaissance all across the forum, and that are great news!
-
Brilliant!
Beautiful, rich colours on these, and that Obelisk guy with the LMG is amazing! I loved the conversion anyway, but the blue and orange colour scheme is sublime. Lovely basing too.
BoB is one of the few gaming periods/arenas that I've resisted so far, but if we keep getting eye-candy like this, I don't know how much longer my willpower is going to hold out!
-
The new additions are gorgeous. Both the orange/blue LMG guy and the bandit with the red head scarf really stand out among their more muted compatriots. Beautiful stuff!
-
Excellent stuff
-
Stunning eye-candy, Alex.
:-* :-*
I can definitely see some more heavily armed Tong on the horizon..... ;)
-
Splendid work Alex :-* :-* :-*
Love the paint job on the Lanchester/Rolls Royce (don't know which it is o_o)
cheers
James

Prof.
These are just damn fine! I would never have thought of the orange vest but it really works (and he in my undergraduate alma mater colors - Go Illini!)

Oh yes!

Excellent!!

Great painting there prof.

This is so good Alex
And what was the last book I just finished reading?

Thanks chaps :)
Superb. What a picture :-*
Cheers, Richard, for a moment I was thinking of keeping it back as idea for a possible LPL entry :)

BoB-renaissance! I like it :) Yes, it's kinda renaissance for me. Some themes are probably for ever, they're coming again and again.
Brilliant!

I'm also quite please with how he's turned out. I wasn't sure about orange at all, starting it with very red as background but It worked even better than I thought it would.
The new additions are gorgeous. Both the orange/blue LMG guy and the bandit with the red head scarf really stand out among their more muted compatriots. Beautiful stuff!
next point I wasn't sure of, actually the basic idea was to keep them all muted but my love to bright colors won :)
Stunning eye-candy, Alex.

Oh yes, Paul, that's for sure ;-)

Love the paint job on the Lanchester/Rolls Royce (don't know which it is o_o)
It's a Rolls Royce, James. I'm not sure but I believe it's the model that Copplestone did offer many years ago within his BoB range. It's actually a bit too small. I've another larger Rolls Royce model, probably Brigade (?), it's been a gift by our Helen. I will be painting it at some point as well.
Prof.

Thanks :) btw, originally I was intending to paint some patterns on it but finally I was so pleased with this orange that I've decided not to do it. Was afraid of screwing it up :)
This is so good Alex

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2899999-the-bloody-white-baron
That's a good one! Bought it years ago too. I#m just re-reading the East Ablaze by Hopkirk, a real BoB classic!

Cheers, Richard, for a moment I was thinking of keeping it back as idea for a possible LPL entry :)
This is indeed the dilemma as it gets to that time of year... ::)
To post, or to save for the LPL...
Plenty of time yet.
;)
-
Beautiful work Alex :-* They really look the part!
As for the LPL question,I'm in two minds; LPL or the build something contest? Very hard :)
-
Thanks, Guy!

That’s a hard question, indeed. I’d try to participate both :)

Finally an update for this one :D
Chinese Bandits. Most of them are Copplestone sculpts, only the one guy (red cap, armed with the double-barreled shotgun) is an older Foundry miniature, made by Perries and coming from the 19 century Chinese range. I thought he fits the gang quite nicely though. In the background of the scene, the Mad BAron himself and some Pulp Figures Warlord Chineses with some heavy support.

A grand update, Alex! :-*

Hi, Prof
still like to know, how You did the skintone on Baldy. The guy totally to the right in the scenery picture.

Thank you for the kind comments, guys!

Yes, fortunately I had some free days in May :)

GW Snakebite Leather as basis color as far as I remember. Though these old color names are gone, the current closest one would be Balor brown

Brilliant Alex :-*
-
I see bandits! Lovely work Alex.
Cheers,
Helen

Captain Krustache of Kashgar; explorer, geographer, discoverer of lost cities and mustache cultivator! I love this miniature so much..That is this year's Movember miniature of Pulp Figures, freshly received and painted.

Great work Prof :-* :-* Love the good Captain as an old grey wolf.

Magnificent!!! :-*
I am baffled about how you make those scenes. There's so much terrain and it looks really good. And best of all no aquarium plants. lol
-
A fine looking chap, very nicely turned out.

Cheers, lads, thanks for the kind words :)

usually I don't have much aquarium plants in my pictures but actually in this scene I've used them twice :D

When I see these pics I want to play our adventurous games again. It´s been so long.....

Kind of a large update today with a lot of newly painted miniatures and new terrain. First I have to thank to a nice LAF fellow Hombre who built for me all that new beautiful stuff used in this scene. The houses are loosely based on the buildings from the movie The Good, the Bad, the Weird and actually that sort of stuff fits perfectly my ongoing BoB project. Again, thanks, Michael, your help is much appreciated! Speaking of figures, this has been my personal record in the LPL so far, I’ve painted 27 figures for this scene. Actually way too muchand I didn't manage to get them on all in the picture..

Basically bloody perfect Alex! :-)

Just outstanding Alex.

Astonishing :o :-*
27 figures! And another 15 in round 9. And God knows how many before that...
Have you been painting for the last 5 years just to unleash this tidal wave of brilliant miniatures just for this LPL??? lol
-
:o :o :o
The most astonishing entry of the LPL EVER.....!
I did not think that the Indian market scene could be beaten....
:-* :-* :-*
And you have been a VERY naughty boy.
There was me thinking that you had been reining yourself in in the last few rounds and then you unleash this amazing tsunami of painting brilliance upon us.....
;)
-
Fabulous and inspiring work, Alex. Grand! :-*

Great fun. These are wonderful.

Thank you, mates :)

I also don't know how many in total I've painted in this season, will count them after the Round 11 :) They all have been painted since December last year, beginning with the LPL announcement. Staying focused helps :)
-
Not working helps as well? How about having a time machine? Or three pairs of arms?
;)
Phenomenal work 8) 8) 8)
