Hi and welcome.
I've suggested to the mods that this should be moved to future wars as this area of the forum is for LAF miniatures.

When it's over there I'll post up some ideas.

Cheers.

It's why 'schoolboy' is tacked under your id.  lol

Have you looked at various superhero ranges, even Heroclix? Some of the Cobra outfits, and even some exotic Joes, look superheroish. Hmm, I need schooling on phrase coining...

Assuming you want to do 80's era G.I. Joe, I'd suggest the plastic WWII Germans from Warlord games/Bolt Action for Cobra troops.  I've seen some amazing Red Shadows done from WWII Germans.  Red Shadows are Cobras European twin.

For Joe's, you'll just have to go through and pick out what works from various troop types.  You might start with The Assault Group.  They have a fairly wide range.  Check some of the Copplestone Future wars minis as well.

Edit:
This is something I've always wanted to do as well.  If you find yourself with extras of certain troop types (TAG doesn't sell individual minis), I'd be interested in taking some off your hands.

Edit:
Found them! http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=10943.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=10943.0)

TAG has a pack in their Ultra Modern range called "Russian MVD with AKSU-74" that I think would work well as COBRA troops.

I quite agree

Their heads yes, but not their bodies. IMHO they have too much kit.

I've been tinkering with this for a long time too.  I started using Pig Iron Heavy Infantry Closed head sprues with GW Imperial Guard as potential Vipers.

For Joes, I suggest looking at the Infinity Adriadna range.  Lots of guys there with potential.  Some of the other factions too, but mostly Ariadna.  They have a great stand in for Beach Head.

Gogol Island has a not Red Laser in the offing... and he always be Red Laser dammit... Cobra Commander is a wuss with a ponytail... bloody GI Joe... ruining my childhood... mutter mutter...

ahem...

Action Force was a UK toy range that soon expanded by the use of sharing figure molds with the US GI Joe range (don't know if anything ever went the other way mind you)... backgrounds were completely different - as said above Red Shadows instead of Cobra... the Cobra Commander figure was used as Red Laser, Destro was Red Jackal, Tripwire was Blades, and so on... then as the world became one great big market, all the Action Force stuff went out the window and it all became GI Joe... and I died a little bit inside...

still could be worse, the German Action Force weren't allowed to kill people apparently...

anyway, Cobra Commander.... http://frothersunite.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=28716

This blog was pretty cool - you might have to trawl around a bit to see which figs he used for all the conversions though...

Soapy's collection was great - was gobsmacked to hear he'd sold it... not that I could ever have afforded it.... sigh...

if you find a decent Destro ( >:( ) do share though...

It would be cool if someone made a kind of modular line of GI Joes in 28mm.  Many of the original series of figures used similar body components with different heads to give them individual personalities.  The same thing could be done with a miniature line.  Head swaps (or separate heads), detail changes and different painting would give you most of the original team: Grunt, Zap, Flash, Rock-n-Roll, Clutch, Stalker (and others whose names I can't remember)...

I've also always wanted to do this, but finding figures is tough.
There aren't a lot of generic suited figures out there for the base troops, and of couse, anyone unique is..um...unique.

Still I wanted some so I modified and repainted some figures just to have some, and I think it's a good start.
This was a few years back, and when I get more serious about it I'll re-do them better.  But they work as a proof, and for the ocassional bad guys.

I've just finished off a small Cobra force, using those Assault Group Russians for the Cobra troopers, this artizan figure with a silver head as Destro, and Miranda from this Foundry pack as the Baroness. Look pretty good with the right paint jobs.

I started a G.I. Joe project late last year, and all I have to show for it is a Not-Snake Eyes from Reaper and a Not-Storm Shadow from RAFM, that I need to do a better conversion job on. He needs bare arms, dang-it. There's a SWAT trooper wearing a stocking mask from RAFM's SWAT Grunts set that I'm planning to use for Beach Head and a bare headed SWAT Sgt. that could make a decent Duke. The big find is Victory Force Miniatures has a German Wehrwolf Half Squad in their N.E.W. War line that will make excellent Cobra troops. They already have the right helmets and face coverings. The guns almost work too.

Yup, that's her.

Those VF minis look really cool, they may indeed work for standard troopers.
Damn, now I'm thinking about this again.
It's not like I don't have other things to do you know.
Oh well, the leadpile has waited, it can continue to wait.
