Title: Making a jungle
Post by: cram on 05 June 2011, 07:12:05 PM
Started making some jungle scenery recently. I'm using plastic plants from aquatic and reptile plants stores, which work great, the only thing is they have rather big leaves, I'd like to include plastic foliage with very small leaves to their branches. I'm sure plenty of you have have created your own wargames jungles at some time, if you can point me in the right direction to aquiring some small leaf foliage I'd be grateful, Many thanks, Marc.

GW has a nice jungle kit  and look at cake decoration supply houses for a cheap source of palm trees

Here are my Jungle scenic bits I made from mainly plastic Flowers I purchased from craft stores rather than aquarium plastic plants which are rather exspensive comparatively to the plastic flowers and greenery sets.  I shop Micheal's and Jo Ann Craft shops, typically they have quite a bit of greenery for sale and on sale most of the year round.

I attached the greenery to bases with hot glue for the most part and built the various plants by using the hot glue, one leaf at a time.

And there you have it.

Thanks Alfrik for all those wonderful scenery tips.

I certainly will be using some of them.

I specially enjoyed and find useful your "Palm trees from plastic plants" article.

Thanks for sharing.

Wide and varied veg gracing those placards. The little purple berries on the one are a swell touch.

I had the same idea. I may trim the height of some of the plants, otherwise ...

[a decent start ...

3 x 6 Base Elite Warriors with Chief,  4 x 7 Base Skirmishers & 1 x 6 Pygmies]

[Soko Skirmishers]

[Soko close-up]

So, just the 50 Soko to get painted up and on those "terrain movement" bases rather than the 150+ figures this army would normally need. It tickles me that there'll be jungle moving Macbeth style towards the enemy!

at our club we did it nearly the same as Belgian in our pirate-jungle-project for Freebooter's Fate on this year's tactica in Hamburg

I was a bit sceptical during the process, beause the plants looked not so jungle-like at all, also they all were a bit to neon-green and light for my liking. But after mixing many many many different types of plants on their bases, it turned out quite good. So that would be my tip: no hesitation, just make small blobs with many planst. In the end, it will be a jungle. In certain places there is enough green, to hide a whole miniature even from real LoS! ^^

What I would do better (or different) now is the colour of the bases - it might had been a lot better, if the center of the small jungle bases would be darker, greener (instead of the same yellow as the sand).

The plants itself lay around for quite a time. It is not easy to find all that different kinds of plants. One shop rarely has them all. Different plants, different shops, different times. °_O

Also I wouldn't hesitate to buy even seemingly too big plants and leaves, because big leaves sometimes make good palms and sometimes an even deeper and more anciant jungle!

@ foliage
some model-railroad-shops do have this strange net-like foliage. I am using it as ivy on walls and buildings. I am not sure, if they will fit for a jungle. Depends on the jungle maybe. However, some of these shops have really good foliage in all kinds of colours! You may pull it apart until there is nearly just a "leaf" per half a cm if You so choose.

Just my 4pix & 2 pennies ^^

so far - best wishes
Drachenklinge

Aren't those 1/32 hence extremely large (I believe some 30cm)

Product Dimensions: 6 x 3 x 12 inches  (Can Grow 69 feet in real life)

Im wondering most gaming trees are way under scale anyway like the average 6 inch palm tree next to a 28mm figure is way under scale but we accept it all the same Im thinking one or two on a 4x6 table would be awesome.

Tell us how you made them great palm trees.... :-*
in case it's me you talking to  ...

The tops are just some artificiel leaves, as You may noticed already. The stem is some small branch from a "corksrew willow" (literaly translated from German, not sure if it is just an ornamental plant of some willow subspecies, but I doubt that), wrapped around is some tape used for painting windows (and NOT letting the colour dribble on glass and frame). But not the smooth one, but a roughly textured one.
Mind to wrap it from top to base, not the other was round for having this palm-like structure. I primed it with brown and a lighter brown, then brushed it with - I think BronzedFlesh or something.

I have seen a similar technique in here with just some more or less thick cord and in result a far more distcinct stem-structure. However, I guess the tape will work much quicker - so it depends what is more important - time or speed. Also the tape will propably work just for smaller stems.

best wishes

Picture?

Actually, having seen the other thread, are these the ones made from palm 'sticks' with the silk fronds on top? I have a few of those and I'm a big fan.

No, people don't mind as long as it's relevant to the thread. And you aren't doing it every five minutes  :)

Actually, if you're Barry from Timeline Miniatures then my trees came from you :)
