Title: Confessions of a John Pickford-o-holic (New painted Dvergar 17-07-13)
Post by: clam on June 18, 2011, 08:15:45 AM
Yes, I confess to you all, my name is clam and yes, I'm a John Pickford-o-holic :P

Usually I post my painted stuff in my Clamshell blog, but want to share a few of my recently painted Pickford's

First is the most awesome Ogre Chieftain sculpt from Otherworld Miniatures:

A wonderful, wonderful miniature and such a joy painting.

Red hair  :o - well, saw some pictures a friend did when he was in Kenya - and like the Masai idea of using red clay for colouring there hair - and thought it would look cool on an prominent Ogre Chieftain.

And then I couldn't resist start painting these:

Best ordinary dwarf release in 20 years, thanks WK ;D

John did a fantastic job on these and I can't hardly wait doing the rest of the poleaxes/halberds and then started thinking of a colour scheme for the Pikemen-clan. But have other obligations, so will have to wait a few weeks.

Looking good. Liking the colour scheme very much too. :) 8)

nice jobs!

I like to know, how you did the metal from the ogre's shoulder plate! Is this mirroring effect painted or is the metal so shiny!? really good result, either way!

Nice job on the ogre chief. I like the idea of the red clay for hair coloring; looks good!

Hey Clam

Nice looking Ogre Chiefain. The armour on him (his arms) looks awesome. Very nice and shiny. The skin tone works perfectly with the orange-red hair, perfect blend of colours, as it looks very natural and beleivable.

As regards to the dwarfs, I am liking the red-green combination (one of my favourite colour combos). I especially like how you used faded/muted reds and greens, as opposed to the brighter shades. Job well done.

Thanks for all the nice words and encouragements. Hopefully I'll soon get the chance of doing more Pickford's. Have more than 50 laying here, and haven't even started picking up the Foundry ones that I 'need' :D

nice jobs!

Its a mix of both. It's an extreme highlight with thin mithril silver on the raised and flat areas - and then the reflection from the daylight bulbs when doing the pictures. Rather pleased with the result myself. Often find it hard getting the metals right - but the very light drybrushings with shades of silver and the MIG pigments worked out okay. So maybe I know have the courage doing my resin Hasslefree Axenarf miniature. The amount of armory on that model has really scared me from trying painting him.

funny thing is, that I experimented with very thin layers of metal-colours myself (on black primer), too, because I somehow got more and more unsatisfied with the brush-method for some certain metallic-looking parts. Especially with blades, which should look smooth 'n not rough - if not old or something.
Sometimes brushing leads to a very rough and grainy surface, but on the other hand I do not want to wet-blend every blade. So far I am pleased.

best wishes

Good paintjobs there, especially the ogre. The more I see those dwarves the more I'm tempted to dig out my Marauder dwarf artillery and add some of these infantry to them.

Once again thank you :)

Updated my Clamshells and Sea Horses-blog (http://clamshellsandseadogs.blogspot.com/2011/07/yes-more-dwarves.html) today with 5 more painted Dwarfs and a pig - and quite a few of them are those Super Awesome ones John did for White Knight - so thought I better update this thread here as well. **Hoping that it will make you all think: "I can do better than that" and then go buying some of WK's minis, so he can make some more money and have set #2 and #3 cast and up for sale (as I cant wait any longer - so, hurry up now, Seb! ... please :D)**

The trained eye may have spotted that the middle one ain't 100% straight out of the box. Cause, this heavy armoured guy was simply to good just to be turned into a ordinary Pikeman! So I've change him slightly, and turned him into a Captain leading this small unite. Still got 2 more to paint - and hopefully then, the new series #2 and #3 will turn up.

And then I couldn't help it. I had to paint the little Peaseblossom (the winged pig, playing a lute) I got from White Knight, as well. Peaseblossom is originally found on John Pickford's 2007 Frother's Unite Sculpting Contest entry (http://www.frothersunite.com/files/wk/contest/2007/puckgal.htm) - and has ended up with WK, and is now to be found in his "Hors Série". And I've heard someone whispering that the little hedgehog, playing the trumpet (one the same awesome diorama piece) is soon to be found in that range, as well! Another "must have" :-)

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/cl_clam/Dwarfs/WK_piglet.jpg)(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/cl_clam/Dwarfs/WK_piglet_III.jpg)(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/cl_clam/Dwarfs/WK_piglet_II.jpg)

Oh, and then I shouldn't really forget telling, that the resin base is a 25mm DS Plain Dungeon Tile from Fenris Games (http://fenrisgames.com/) and the awesome printable paper floor tile is made by Dave King (http://bederken.blogspot.com/2011/02/bederken-dungeon-free-printable-tiles.html)

Looking good. Loving those orangish reds of yours.

The conversion looks interesting too. And I think you're the first person (ever) to paint that little pig.

@WK - first of many - will hit all records when first the hole Puck's Dance is made available - lol

@Blue - Hard to see at the front, but yes it's a pistol, alright  :)

Been awhile sinece I last gave you an updated on my collecting and painting John Pickford, but a few more minis have received some paint :)

- and then I've also found time to set up an actual Wiki. So moved it all from my Blogspot account to a free wiki at Wikia.

You'll find the new wiki here:

http://collectingjohnpickford.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

Sorry about the rather blurry thumbnail-pictures but the enlarge ones are all fine. If anyone knows how to fix the quality of the thumbnails-just PM me with your advice, please :)

And now back to what its all about:

First, the last two WK set #1 Orange and Green Dwarfs:

The unit is now complete:

Second, is one of the promotional pieces I've got:

It's name is "Spiker" and probably some sort or Squig-beast for some Goblins. A charming little beast with a typical Pickford face expression.

And last, my two entries for the Monthly Challenge at the Otherworld Miniatures Forums:

For August these Giant Leeches:

Test pieces for improving my wet blendings.

And here, in September, I just finished the first of my 3 Eye of Terror's

A true nightmare glueing together (like all multipart white metal kits with small parts are) - but really joy painting - even all the eyes. Though, it will be a while before I start painting the Eye of Terror II and the Eye of the Deep :P

And should anyone feel for it and jump aboard the paint-a-Pickford bandwagon - well why not enter in the October month's challenge @ Otherworld's :) Next months theme is ...: "Grab your Pickford's" : http://z9.invisionfree.com/Otherworld_Minis/index.php?showtopic=603 ;)

And like always there are more pictures to be found on the blog: http://clamshellsandseadogs.blogspot.com/

Thanks guys. Such a joy painting the WK Dwarves - enjoyed it so much that I have assembled another 8 and are in a phase deciding what colours to use on them. They will all be test pieces for the the next few units I'll be doing (until WK starts releasing the ponies ;) ). Right now I'm playing with pink/grey, Yellow/Bordeaux, red/black, brown/off-white, blue/red - but nothing decided yet :)

Been a quite month - painting wise - sorry to have let you down guys - but wife got herself a new master bedroom, so she is rather pleased. Can't keep you all happy, can I?

But did get some paint on a few models for the regular challenges I attend.

First, the challenge at Otherworld. How would I look myself into the eye, if I didn't attend the Grab Yer Pickford's - lol

Should have done something big, of course - but time only allowed me to paint the unreleased Mimics.

And then, they ain't actually 100% Pickford's as the chest itself is sculpted by Paul Muller - shame on me  :?

Next, a little creature painted for the Brush Slave at Chaos Dwarfs Online. Last months theme was beast, but had to paint something fast and played it safe painting this little promotional piece, John did back in 2005 or 6, I believe.

Last but definitely not least, WKs Mustard Seed received some paint. When Googling after a suitable hedgehog colour scheme I came cross an Albino Hedgehog, and after looking at that, I couldn't picture him any different :)

And like always, a few more shots at the blog: Clamshells and Sea Horses (http://clamshellsandseadogs.blogspot.com/2011/11/grab-your-pickfords-part-3.html)

Maybe, if I ever need to fill a slot on a productionmould and have nothing else to put in there. But TBH, I doubt I've sold more than a dozen of the other two combined.

Surely, what you meant was "if I have nothing better to put in there"!  ;)

And about sales? People are waiting for the entire diorama piece, of course. Now, who wouldn't want this little piece of art?

And when have sales actually helped anything in our hobby? This is art! - and you know what's the only right thing to do  :D

I agree with DeafNala, very cool!

Would doubt that I would be able to use it myself, but I guess it would appeal to those with a more fantastical approach and to painters more than gamers.

Lovely piece though.

Love that beastman (?) in the mini diorama! I would be thrilled to see more beastmen made in a similar style, reminiscent of some classic Citadel ones - example:

Always reminds me of the cover of "Death on the Reik" with the faun-like beastmen lurking in the shadows...

5 months without an update  :? Should have thought I could now post a hundred painted Pickford's, right? - but unfortunately not   :'(

But last couple of weeks I have finally managed to get a few pieces painted:

First, my entry for Brush Slave League (http://www.chaos-dwarfs.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=10339) @CDO. Did plan joining LPL 2012 but failed, so I've started my own little league (more suited for my speed of painting - lol) with the other evil dwarf fanatics @CDO.

Pirate Captain John and Sea Scum:

Nearly all made from WK's fantastic dwarfs. Trained eye might spot an old Citadel in there as well.

Also find time to finally paint my Dwarf Lord with lance on pony (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=33801.msg403841#msg403841) - which you guys helped me finding bits for. Ended up using bits from miniature-heroes.co.uk :)

Turned out like this:

Think the conversion worked out quite well - and I am tempted to try do a few more (while waiting for WK ;) )

And like always, more pictures to be found on my blog (http://clamshellsandseadogs.blogspot.com/)

And maybe I need another ship, cause more marine dwarves I need to get sooner or later, too. Come to think of it ... maybe it is similar to the Flying Dutchmen and I will die the day I paint all my minis.

By the way - looking at this paintings I am somehow glad You did NOT join the league!! There are too many good opponents already!  ;)

Thanks for all the nice words, guys. WK's multipart miniatures are the greatest gift to a Old time dwarfer like me. And "yes", I know - you think I get paid for saying so ....! :) - but I don't, I'm actually now told that I'll get "over-charged", now that I'm an addict :P But still worth every penny.

Really working slow here, but there has been a bit of progress.

Started the next unit of WK Dwarfs - the Pikemen Pikedwarfs. Each unit in my army will be painted in a different colour scheme (cause I know too well, what will happen if I'm to do 100+ miniatures in on single colour scheme). So this time I tried out a blue and yellow one.

Here is the first 3 - which was my round 3 entry at the Brush Slave League (http://www.chaos-dwarfs.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=11087).

This unit will be a mix of WKs and MMs as I have an almost complete MB1 Regiment  (only need the musician (with the flute) and a single trooper C - nudge, nudge ;)) sitting here awaiting paints.

A trained eye will spot the use of square bases ....! Originally this project was just to build a small skirmish army for smaller games, but the WK range is growing bigger and bigger - and I have re-found an interest for playing large scale table top games with rankable units, so I will try to do an army and group the core troopers in units of 20-25 models.

And like always a few more pictures on the blog - http://clamshellsandseadogs.blogspot.com/2012/05/brush-slave-league-round-3.html

Thanks guys.

 - and now something completely different ... :)

A few days ago Manic_Miner (FourAMiniatures) gave us a preview of his first (of many, I hope :D) Pickford sculpt(s) (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=41452.0)  - and by the courtesy of Mr. Coleman himself I have been given the chance of getting myself a copy prior to its official release.

Just finished the base (glues probably still wet) but thought I'll share him with you, too (as I've already shared him on my blog and on facebook).

Now, all we need is to convince Mr. Coleman, that he needs to get a few more made :)

Thanks, Doc. And it could be nice with a little painting session - and with the new medical cure I'm on it might be sooner than you know :) Really having some progress killing the neurological pain. Just need to get used to it - as right now it make me so god darn tired.

Enough about my health - here is something new:

First we have something not so Pickford-ish - but with a Pickford touch and still interesting for LAFs, I think:

Goblin King on hobby horse:

Yes, Whiffs Orcs (CP Models) - with a bit of rework to suit my projects.

And then, I found time to paint some of my dear Pickford gems:

the Goblin Jester's (Kommandos) and Goblin Fanatic:

An entry for "my baby" the Brush Slave League '12 @ www.chaos-dwarfs.com

And as always more pictures on the blog (http://clamshellsandseadogs.blogspot.com) :)

In there you also find info and a link to my newest Pickford Adventure - the Ewal Dvergar-project (http://claminiatures.blogspot.com). More of that later on, when I get some of them painted :)

I have asked Mr. Blue to help me along with my newest Pickford miniature adventure - and I just got this picture (and some individual shots) before he went on camping

What a wonderful job he did on the EwalDvergar - Thanks Blue, thanks for all your help and support :)

Hmm! something like this?

Yes, I was also quite surprised seeing how well they scale with these OOP Marauder Miniatures, too. Must be a coincidence :D

Or like this (mixed with Blue's painted MM90's, I belive)

Looks "bigger" here mostly due to Blue's use of the more "heroic" heads (out of the 15 John did).

Colour me really rather interested. Should I just PM you if I'd like to pick up some of your extras?

Yes, you could just PM me - but like Andy (Manic_miner) just said, its all on the Ewal Dvergar blog (http://claminiatures.blogspot.dk/2012/06/want-some.html). Right now I only have a few spare master casts, but I will put them into a production mould during summer. Hopefully I'll have full sets of 8 bodies, 10 heads, 8 weapon hands and 8 shields ready around August.

Awesome stuff!  I was thinking the other day that it would be cool if someone picked up a range of classic-style chaos dwarfs to match WK's range of imperial dwarfs, and here it is.

I think the scale looks pretty good - any size discrepancy could just be attributed to the warping power of chaos or something  o_o

My interest for Mr. Pickford hasn't cooled - but my painting ratio has been below zero due to bad health/strong medication - but I have painted a few bits and pieces Id like to share.

Some might already have seen these but they deserve a place in here too - as one could hope that it might encourage others to try them out *cough* and put a few coins in WKs pockets so he can produce more *cough*

First one is a straight out of the box White Knight Zweihänder Sergeant - but what a sculpt and joy painting :-*

(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JjA79SLwfoA/UQvrtnF9nsI/AAAAAAAABE4/2mK7pF7MCH0/s1600/WK_sergant_1d.jpg)(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-u6B593e-DOk/UQvrtz2kp4I/AAAAAAAABFA/OXNCXKNF3Y0/s1600/WK_sergant_1b.jpg)(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nMWTu81vDw8/UQvruUH-PlI/AAAAAAAABFI/rLB0qDMzM4o/s1600/WK_sergant_1e.jpg)

The next one was just made for fun - with a hope to convince WK to do "a proper one". A scratch build/kit bash piece that I call "Pickford's Cart" ;)

So much fun doing that I'm actually considering doing another one :D

It's been a bit quite in here late - mainly due to all quality hobby time has been spend on getting the second set of multi parted dwarfs ready.

Have just received 7kg of white metal from the UK and am really happy with the result. Look  :o  ;D

If you want to know more - go here: http://claminiatures.blogspot.com - in here you'll also find a few pieces from Sjoerd Trouwee (Man behind Twisted Tales) - worth a watch, I'd say.

But while waiting for the sculptor and caster some Pickford's did receive paint - like these Ewal Dvergars from set #1:

Or these Musketeers - from Iron Mask Miniatures (http://ironmaskminiatures.blogspot.com):

These Musketeers are still "to come". Gary is planning a Kickstarter for these. Can't be long, now :D

And last, I'd like to share this little special piece John did - the Mad Painter

This miniature is made as a "prize" for the painters at the Brush Slave League (@chaos-dwarfs.com), so will be a limited to participants/winners here. But still worth sharing, right?

Time for some new painted stuff. This time miniatures from my own little range - the Ewal Dvergar.

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/cl_clam/Clam%20Minis/Painted/ED3.jpg)(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/cl_clam/Clam%20Minis/Painted/ED5_roman_style.jpg)(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/cl_clam/Clam%20Minis/Painted/ED8.jpg)(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/cl_clam/Clam%20Minis/Painted/ED7.jpg)(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/cl_clam/Clam%20Minis/Painted/ED5.jpg)(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/cl_clam/Clam%20Minis/Painted/Citadel_CD_crossbowman.jpg)

- and yes, you are right the little crossbow man ain't from my line, but an old Citadel Chaos Dwarf Crossbow. Reason for adding him is the weapon he is holding :) See, John and I are actually planning on doing a Crossbow Warrior upgrade for the Ewal Dvergar. First step, has been creating a suitable crossbow, so this one here was sculpted and mastered with the second batch of Dvergar.
Having the crossbow in hand, I really had to see how it looked in the hands of a dwarf - and for that the Citadel Chaos Dwarf was perfect - and suits him quite well, don't you think :-)

FANTASTIC! You just keep getting better with each new post; WONDERFUL brushwork on some UBERCOOL minis. I'm a fan of the eyebrows. GREAT & INSPIRATIONAL WORK!

This is top notch brushowork and photography of figures that are loaded with charm and character. A joy to see work this well executed.

Very nice, love the paint-job you did on those :o. I received the complete Ewal Dvergar range yesterday (a birthday gift from my wife  :D) and they are brilliant miniatures. Consider some of the color schemes stolen/borrowed.

Regards,
Za

I need 18 of those crossbows please!   I hate the plastic ones they came with.

Wonder painting on wonderful figures my friend....

Thanks for all your nice comments. Very kind of you :)

Glad to hear the packages found you fast, Za. Look forward seeing some of them painted.

@Blue, 18 you say ...? Not sure you I can help you here. But might mould a sprue of 4, if we do the crossbow men, and then we can talk about it.

Not by me, but by a good friend of mine Mikkel Nyboe (@Gurer - the blog (http://mikkelnyboe.blogspot.dk/)) - for his growing collection of Ewal Dvergar:

CONGRATULATIONS! You have a VERY TALENTED Friend....actually it seems you have a few Friends that fall into that category. The Beardless Dwarf has a WONDERFULLY expressive face enhanced by some FINE brushwork. VERY WELL DONE!
