Hi All,
I'm looking for '20s and '30s pulp boat things. Crews, terrain, boats etc..
I'm thinking prohibition era, innsmouth, back of beyond, Kong and all of that good stuff!
I have the Brigade merchant seamen, some Artizan bits and bobs, the HLBS tug-boat. I'm interested to hear about anything that anyone here might have come across on the ir voyages that could, in any way, be turned to this sort of thing. Dockside scenery, vehicles, old buildings etc.
Any help or inspiration would be great!

Minime (correct spelling I think) has a nice selection of such things I think. There is (or was) an American company that did a selection of prohibition buildings from the 20's.
Not much help I'm afraid ;)
cheers

Its Old Glory. A mate has a load of the buildings and they are very nice. They did lots of nice extra bits, like water towers, advertising hoardings etc. I've just checked the site and they are only showing a few of the buildings now. ???

Also worth checking out Steve Barber Models he has some nice bits and pieces, buildings, etc although they are closer to 25mm though.

Those Old glory are nice... do they have a UK distributor?
e2a: Yes it's http://www.oldgloryuk.com/ but couldn't find the buildings...

Sarissa does some nice laser cut buildings http://www.sarissa-precision.co.uk/news/files/66079a933fdbd193da5fa260882e187c-8.html

Old Glory's Mimi or Toutou might be good with or without the weapons. And the Old Glory "shipyard" has a number of potentially useful boats (note the torpedo boat):
http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/products.asp?cat=388&pg=2
Reviresco has some good bits for ships and boats, and has some pretty good looking paper boats. The lobster fishing boat and motor boat set would be great, along with the fishing lugger and the small tramp steamer:

Lemax produces some wooden piers, and also some "harborside village" buildings. These are a bit more cute than pulpy. If you want the humor of a dark scenario set against a backdrop of a cute little town, then they would be useful. Then again, maybe a bit of paint could make them look worn and rundown. Otherwise get or build some darker dreary looking buildings. But one advantage of the Lemax is that the buildings can be lit up from inside, and there are streetlamps that can light. So you could actually play a Pulp scenario in the dark using Lemax.

Just in case that fails, 28mm Blue Moon, Slice of Americana, and Gang Land - Chicago Buildings. (all links on the left of the screen)

I've been wanting to do this genre for years... Go to it Keith! Give us some inspiration. I've got all the Brigade and Artizan seaman types, and have collected various other suitable character figures. But the project keeps getting pushed onto the back burner by the latest new thing... :(
What I really need of course, is a bloody big tramp steamer... ::)

Outpost has some lovely row buildings that would be perfect for a dock street front.
Dixon in their wild west section has some men that are loading/unloading boxes and barrels very useful. Maybe also in their gangland section.
Lledo Days gone by vehicles and Ertl both have vehicles that will work (Ertl are larger vehicles and don't really mix well with Lledos).

Guys, guys, I'm surprised at you! You've forgotten the king of Pulp, Bob Murch! He does a whole series of waterfront folk.

Ainsty scenery is lovely!
I've also got the Shifting lands docks, which I think Grimm used for his Innsmouth boards.

Loads of painted pics of the SL stuff in my folder too:

I have recently been putting together various starter sets, one of the ones I have been asked for is a Dockside set, this should be ready by the end of next week and will of course be cheaper than buying the items seperately.
Dockside to include, stone jetty, wooden catwalk jetties, floating jetties and mooring posts. Plus various dockside scatter items and a new piece which is as yet unrealesed.
I will post when these are ready

Tobsen (http://www.tobsen77.de/index.php?lan=en) has a few nice pulpy pieces.
One of these to race around in - Tobsen's Seagull, my paintjob:

Or perhaps one of these to lurk under the oily water - Tobsen's Globo, my paint again:

(or indeed on a dockside or in a mad inventor's harbourside warehouse, which is why I built the pallet/stand for it!)
There's been some very, very nice harbour scenery projects on LAF, about to shut the computer down for the night here but search for "harbour" (and "harbor" to catch the folks who can't spell properly). Grimm's Lovecraftian harbour comes to mind; there's been a couple of others too.

I actually bought your stone harbour and pontoons a week or so ago, but couldn't find the building shown on the end in any of the other sections (sort of run-down ruin). Lovely kits!

For the docks, Lemax makes some really great wooden docks which fit EXACTLY with 28m figs...
http://www.amazon.com/Lemax-14643-Wooden-Docks/dp/B003YTWOJO
I got a ton of these and use them all the time for pulp...
As for 'dock wares', good Crates and barrels are from Pegasus

Also for crates, try War Torn Worlds (cheap but they work well...)

Since I bought the ranges earlier this year I havnt seen a mould for that piece either? there are many gamers out there who have a good knowkedge of the old Ainsty ranges who might shed some light on it?
Glad you like the models though Keith and thanks for your order

Need a lighthouse for your pulpy harbor? Lemax has produced at least a dozen different styles. Some of them have rotating lights! Here is the first of two pages showing a dozen lighthouses:
http://www.lemaxcollection.com/showproducts.aspx?s=lighthouse
Note that there is a search function on the Lemax home website. I suggest typing in wharf, pier, dock, whale, and aquarium to see what comes up. You could make a little tourist town's main street with Lemax.

I'm sure people here on LAF could scratchbuild something like this model of a 1930 motor yacht for well under $250 US, but this model gives a good idea of what a pulp era boat might look like:
http://www.woodenboatstore.com/1930s-Motor-Yacht/productinfo/620-059/
For little wooden runabouts from the 1920's and 1930's, check out this wiki article. There's a couple of good photos there:

My own Pulp harbour set up, featuring Ainsty Casting stone jetty and wooden jetty bits with Old Glory Chicago Gangster buildings in the backround ~

The figures are mostly Pulp Figures by Bob Murch and the vehicles an ecclectic mix of Lledo, Days Gone By, Solido and the like.

Sections for the Stone Jetty are now available seperately so no need to buy the whole set again if you want to extend as shown by the photos above in the fabulous Pulp Harbour by David.
