Hi All,
I'm looking to make a few North African style buildings and while they are easy to put together with foam card, what's the best way to get the texture effect on the walls?
Any advice gratefully received :)

I use "filler" that is used in home for example to fill up cracks in the walls. The same stuff is widely used among the modellers to make terrain. It makes a very realistic texture to adobe style buildings. Also it is very easy to spread!

Filler was my plan, I just wasn't sure if it was spread thinly if it would break easily.

the filler I use spreads very thin and doesn't crack. The brand is "light filler" and the package says that if used over 4mm thick it might crack. I have made dungeon floors about 2-3mm thick without cracks.

Here's a picture of some small buildings I've textured with filler.

Hopefully he's clear enough. :)

As long as the underlying walls are pretty sturdy, you shouldn't get any damage. I've used a very thin coat of cheap DIY filler over foamcore and had no problems at all.

I use premixed filler over foamcore or card buildings all the time, it works nicely.

The other thing I do is prime my scenery with a 1:1 mix of white (PVA) glue and paint (usually black), which protects and toughens the plaster/filler nicely.

Thanks for the replies, It's good to know that i'm not doing something crazy!

I've also used DAS modelling clay, Apply it over a coat of uPVA glue and you have a little more texture.
I would recommend it in conjunction with Filler rather than just DAS.

One thing I'll do is dilute spackle/plaster and apply it with a brush (over say, foamcore, etc).

If you mix a little PVA glue (AKA white or Elmer's glue I think) into the filler it is supposed to make it a bit more flexible.
