How many companies make modern armor in 28mm?
and who are they
-
At least four ...
Imprint Models,
Company B,
S&S,
Sloppy Jalopy
-
Hobby Armor Depot: http://hobbyarmordepot.homestead.com/modern.html
I got a couple trucks of theirs at GenCon last year...I think Miniature Building Authority was selling them. I really like them. They also have the option of assembling and priming the models for you. Lots of stowage too (I've been meaning to ask them if they'd sell the stowage separately).

Force of Arms do some useful stuff.
Sloppy Jalopy has the ex-Chieftain range BMPS, BTRs etc.
If 1/48 appeals then there the Kitech/Academy kits of Abrams, LeClercs, Merkavas, Challengers etc. I have the Academy T-72 and it's way overscale.
Eureka produce an M113 as does Parkfield.

try:

or even better
http://www.imprintmodels.co.uk/Shop.aspx (http://www.imprintmodels.co.uk/Shop.aspx)
as these really are very very good indeed and a complete bargain!
Or like myself and many many other, discover the virtues of die cast models...
If you look on ebay long enough you can find pretty much any modern tank/APC/AFV as a diecast from somewhere.. china... russia...USA...

I'm interested in this topic as well.
i thought that die casts might be the way to go but so far I have been unsuccessful in finding any at the right scale to match with 28mm
The Imprint models mentioned above look to be the next best thing and may well be the best option.

a have a couple of the imprint models and think they are the bee knee's. Fantastic models with awesome detail
-
The die casts ARE out there... You just need to hunt around....
I have a Hobby Master 1/48 - 1/50 Abrams M1A1 which is very very very nice indeed and about as detailed as ANY plastic kit...
Also these 1/50 Hummvee's are also very nice, and are perfect match for most 28mm moderns...
