Bit of a departure from the world of miniatures, but does anyone know of a contemporary RPG system set in the wild west? I have a whacky idea to combine it with Dark Heresy!
Any suggestions gratefully received (provided that they are polite! lol)
Many thanks

Aces and Eights is great but it can be too in depth for some

Coyote Trail, available as a download from Wargame Vault for £3.07:

There's also 5 expansion sets available (and an American War Of Independence adaptation) - all similarly low-priced.

Deadlands: Reloaded is also current, and quite good.
-
Savage Worlds available from http://www.drivethrurpg.com
A generic system that is incredibly easy to pick up and play with.

Aces & Eights is superb but, as Leetje's already mentioned, it is ridiculously detailed. I purchased the "Shattered Frontier" hardback tome when it first came out & I still haven't come anywhere near reading through it all.
There's also a list of Western RPG's here (http://rpggeek.com/geeksearch.php?objecttype=rpgitem&advsearch=1&action=search&q=&include%5Brpgdesignerid%5D=&geekitemname=&include%5Brpgpublisherid%5D=&geekitemname=&range%5Byearpublished%5D%5Bmin%5D=&range%5Byearpublished%5D%5Bmax%5D=&searchuser=&propertyids%5B%5D=2083&familyids%5B%5D=181&B1=Search) that might tickle your fancy.

+1 on Deadlands. I actually like the older system and it's poker-hand based mechanics (I'm not familiar enough with Savage Worlds to comment). The cards really added to the western feel (saloon card games and the like). And despite the steampunk-horror nature of the game, it's really mostly a western game, and you can downplay the fantastic elements pretty easily...

What's going on, Robbie?
Are the Inquisition finally going to investigate what is REALLY going on at The Little House On The Prarie ?!? lol

One of the reasons people think Aces and Eights is complicated they feel they need to use all the rules straight away.
For example there are detailed rules for cattle drives that workout things like how many cattle you might lose crossing various terrain. When you start out, unless your actually running a cattle drive you would not even want to consider this rule.
One of the love hate things with A&8s is the character creation. It allows you to get an amazing amount of depth but some people prefer not to spend an hour fleshing out their character. Personally I like it.
On another note as a companion for whatever RPG you decide I highly recommend CowTown creator http://www.amazon.com/Knuckleduster-Cowtown-Creator-Authentic-Role-Playing/dp/0966704630 It's a great book. I learned lots of things about the old west that I did not know before reading it.

Agreed! Pretty well essential to make an authentic Western town.

Gutshot is really cool and movie like!

Aces & Eights looks amazing but it's been out of print for ages. I've been trying to get it!

You can buy it as a PDF download. Also the players guide has all the rules for the game.

if you want a setting then try and find a copy (printed or electronic) of "Western Hero" by Hero Games. Has a whole section on Deadwood 1876 (real - well mostly real - not HBO).

I personally love Classic Deadlands. Good character creation, neat combat system and cool magik and monsters!
Aces and Eights is a neat game (we played it for about 4 months regularly), but the game was a tad complex, even without all of the optional rules. But our major nitpic was character advancement. You made a great character (yes. I did not find the 'fleshing out' all that bad...), but when it was time to 'level up', points came far and few in-between.
Also those 'card based' chase system was a tad daunting...
Great combat system though.
I have the hardbound copy of Aces and Eights for sale for those in the USA.
I also have a copy of Deadlands:Reloaded hardbound for sale also...

Thansk a million to everyone for the suggestions - wow! Sorry I've been a bit tardy replying, real life's been intruding in the shape of work :(
Really appreciate the suggestions, folks, thanks very much!

Your note of suspicion has been duly noted, citizen - stand by for imminent psyche-re-evaluation and attitude re-alignment...

Cheers, really appreciate the advice - I will mull it all over as I reqally fancy adding a Wild West element to Dark Heresy!

Cheers, Richard. The rules complexities of any of these systems won't be an issue, as I'll be using the Dark Heresy rules. It's just a scenario or two I am after, and these suggestions really sound like they may fiot the bill - cheers.

Western City-
I just bought it cheep off Mongoose Publishing, as £5 for a copy of the rule book (I bougt 3- you can never have enough)
We ran a session last week and it was a lot of fun.
it's a very stripped down system, not sure what you had in mind. It's unique selling point is that it is a Games Master-less RPG- wierd but true!
